Heritage Rough Rider Single Action Revolver

Anyone have any experience with the Heritage Rough Rider Single Action Revolver in .22 LR? For $150 it's obviously no Colt, but it looks like a great little sidearm for the trapline for dispatching animals at close range. But that price is almost suspiciously low...

lots of people have the here , and lots of people here have posted that they find it very usefull on the trap line

some will comment about it isn't so great for rabbits of opportunity along the line while it is fine for others

I don't own one but have shot one it was probably the finest example of one i have ever seen or heard of .

they work , they go bang , sometimes they have kinda so-so triggers , some i have seen the barrel lossens up , but they are serviceable

we probably don't go two weeks without talking about them in some way or another her eon the forum


Personally I went Ruger Wrangle shorter barrel , lighter weight , good trigger , transfer bar vs manual safety , ruger name but it was 225 and not 150 but I may still end up with one one day when they are on sale for 129.99

It will work for dispatch if you are ok with a slow loading brick on your side. Couldn't get rid of mine fast enough.

Bought one off a drunk buddy at a party in high school, she ain’t pretty but I’ve killed a thousand or so critters with that turd. Left under a bridge, dropped in water, bounced around in truck for years. It serves its purpose.

I've used one for the past two seasons, no issues. The Ruger Wrangler is better quality, but for the price they work great and no worries if you get it scratched

also ADC shoots so many coon on his line he really needs a semi auto and a belt full of mags but then it would leave brass laying around.

and we poke at each other about this but about every time a HRR discussion he makes a valid point , the RR rough rider holds 6 and does take a little longer to load and weigh a little over 2 pounds

I am small time so 6 is generally a stop for me.

I do find with 6 inch barrels you need to wear them like a 1950s motor cop , so that it hangs between the seat and door in the car or it pokes you in the side.

A 9 or 10 shot revolver with fold out cylinder is ok too. lol

I have one. It's cheap, is about all the good I can say about it. Some like them but mine is very poor in accuracy. Key holing medium to slow ammo at even moderate close ranges. The gun is great if you want a ten foot or closer gun that is cheap enough you dont have to worry about taking care of it. I just struggle liking a gun that doesn't hit what I aim at.

Have a screwdriver handy. Flat blade. They loosen up the more you shoot them. I didn't regret the purchase. Lost it in a boating accident.

I looked at getting one but went with the Ruger Wrangler instead.

Not as good as the Ruger Wrangler, I have both. Definitely not a top quality gun like a single six. It is a good gun to carry on the 4 wheeler or boat. Only problem I've heard of is failure to perfectly align cylinder with barrel, and that was from one friend. Buy it, its as cheap as you can get for a functionable gun. You won't cry forever if it gets lost, stolen or rusts up.

I used one this season. Worked fine. I paid $129, saw one last week for $119.

my old trap line revolver needed to be tightened all the time it got retired by the wrangle

I’ve used rough riders for about 16 years. I currently use one on the line. I can hit a pop can consistently at 30 feet. I can’t for sure say how accurate it really is cause I’ve never been great with a pistol, but for dispatch it’s great. Great for toting around the farm at work for shootin at squirrels and badgers and whatever other critters happen to get too close, cause it doesn’t break my heart when it gets dropped or scratched up

I have been eyeballing a wrangler though.

That's my big concern with the barrel length of any non-compact pistol. Any other thoughts on the barrel length? Looks like it's available in 4.75 or 6". I like the look of the 4.75 and figure it would be easier to carry, but does that extra 1.25" make a difference with accuracy or keeping your hand at a safer distance from an angry animal?

I've been using a Winchester 69 rifle to run my line and while it's a great rifle, it's a PITA to carry. Plus, every time someone sees me walking into the woods with the rifle this time of year, I get the feeling they think I'm out poaching deer.

Definitely pick the shorter barrel and the birds head grip if you can. At least that will help lighten the brick.

safer distance? the accuracy isn't that bad , work on shooting at one inch dots drawn on a box about 6-8 feet out on the ground , you will be plenty good for what you need to do then, the extra barrel length doesn't add much for velocity at all there may be more variation between rounds in bulk ammo than the difference the barrel length creates.

To clarify, with my rifle I usually shoot point blank. Figured if I do the same with the revolver, maybe the longer barrel means my hand is a little further away if the animal snaps at me.

Skunks I shoot at from a "safe" distance, but not to avoid getting bit.
