Accidently drop a can into boiling oil? RUN!

Accidently drop a can into boiling oil? RUN! - 02/19/21 09:58 PM

Came across this. Drop a sealed can of anything in boiling oil and obviously you are in for a bad day but I never thought it would be this bad. Your life would be over and in a pretty horrible way. I'm posting this for more of a safety message since I know that a lot of people here deep fry turkeys and such. Not that most of you would be dumb enough to drop a can of mushrooms into a vat of boiling oil but any moisture at all can quickly turn ugly. Skip to 3:20 to get past the crap.

I took a tour of baldor motors die casting several years ago. They had a rule that you couldn't bring an aluminum can into the building. They said if someone tossed a can into the the molten aluminum and it had any liquid in it it would be very bad.

I work in an aluminum plant in the ingot department. Water in molten gets really serious very fast. We have had some deaths from very minor incidents. Safety videos they show us had some plants after explosions that looked like they had been hit by a b52 bombing run. I remember 120 injured 80 dead and 17 undetermined.

Undetermined???? I guess that means they didn't even find a big toe in a boot 1/4 mile away. They just vaporize.

I too worked in a steel plant for awhile. When it was raining or snowing the commotion those furnaces made would keep ya on the look out. I did see a few blow some rather large objects out of them. These were electric furnaces with 3 really big electrodes that used something like 4000 VDC to melt steel.

Oddly, a squirrel shut the entire plant down one time. LOL

One of my very first jobs was working in a industrial ceramics shop. We made testers for molten steel. The testers were inserted into molten steel to extract a sample for testing. The molds we used to make the ceramics was cardboard. After it was baked and hardened , we stripped the cardboard mold off.

The boss was a real stickler to remove every little bit of the cardboard. He told us that if even a ½" X ½" piece of cardboard remained it would explode when lowered into the steel.

When we were kids we had a pot of tar we were melting so we could seal up a boat we had made. Well we decided we needed more so we just dumped In pail of water. We were lucky we were up wind from the explosion. And of coarse we all tossed 22 shell into fires.

Lucky we made it to old age.
