Made top 5

Made top 5 - 02/23/21 02:41 AM

State record nontypical buck on SCI.
Long story short. I couldn't keep a massive nontypical buck I recovered about a year ago since it was trophy size. Found out earlier it scored 216 5/8" and is now hanging in the G&F office here. I looked up state records and it places in top 5 in SCI. Didn't come close to B&C records but I'm still excited.

Unfortunately the office is still closed because of covid so once it opens I'll get a pic of it. It was summer European mount

I would have taken pics and told the state to go find it themselves. Stupid law

And you can’t keep a found skull for what reason?

Re: Made top 5 - 02/23/21 03:22 AM

hmm, I don't understand?
Did you find it dead?

Re: Made top 5 - 02/23/21 03:24 AM

nvwrangler, I wasn't happy I was not able to keep it. I have some good pics.

Wanna Be, the reason being it is a trophy if it wasn't I would've been able to keep it.

I'm curious too. If you found it, was it on State Property? Did the G&F have any reason to believe it was killed illegally? Was it possibly a "protected" species ? Otherwise, what would give them the right to confiscate it? Doesn't make sense for them to take it from you.

Re: Made top 5 - 02/23/21 03:41 AM

Bnb yup.
Wow traprjohn. Not nearly that wide.
SJA on private. all game is protected here. We have a draw system for big game. The buck was too far eaten to tell if roadkill or bad shot placement. Even the landowner was bummed I couldn't keep it.

Like I said very long story short.
I'm bummed I couldn't keep it but at least I'll be able to visit it often and it's going in the records

Well if nothing else, I hope they'll give you credit on a plaque for finding it :-)

I sure hope so. It's been a year since I was last in the office and can't remember if there are any names on the plaques. There's very impressive mounts in this office.

Re: Made top 5 - 02/23/21 05:35 AM

Nice score Adam, get more photos when you can!!

I've told of the South Dakota "law" (actually administrative rule that has the power of law) on here several times of found "trophy" buck skulls becoming state property no matter where they are found. Such rules must not be that common given the response of Adam's post. Yes, in SD, if you find a buck skull with inside spread of 24 or more inches, the state agency people get it, no matter where its found. You won't find it in the hunting regs book, but that doesn't mean you won't get charged for violating their rule. Such racks are posted on their state auction in a year or so, depending on when its found-- auction is usually in May. Enjoy!

Re: Made top 5 - 02/23/21 03:06 PM

Thanks guys.
NonPcFed that's just like here.

Yes I was bummed I couldn't keep it because it was trophy grade, but to find this beauty was great and to now know everyone who goes into the Albuquerque G&F office will see it is priceless.

The unit I found it in is a stupid hard unit to draw but has stellar bucks in it. I've seen a few that put this guy to shame (both typical and nontypical) and are what dreams are made of.

Lefty
Gilly is a true cowboy, rides range, brands cattle, etc, occaisionally uses a 4 wheeler but not often, mostly horses.
He is now on an 800k acre ranch in central Oregon.
Last time I went out he was on a 400k acre ranch in ID.
We met when we worked together back in the 80's in Idaho.
Taking the family out for another visit this April.
I will rough score that rack then.
He detests hoopla and fanfare and has not let but a few know he killed the buck of a lifetime.
He just meat hunts and once in a while some antlers show up...33 pointer this time.

Trapper John every place that has lots of cattle has some good hands and you cannot count those ol boys out. They know where the bigguns like to hide out. Even on a new place they anticipate where they hang out it is called reading the land and the farther west you roam the better you need to be at it.
