Re: .17 Win Super Mag - 03/02/21 04:24 PM

Great little gun for coyotes and other vermin out to 200 yards or so. Fast and flat out to that range for sure, but like most hunting scenarios shot placement is king. If you can shoot, it will do the job nicely with little to no fur damage. Certain areas I call are rimfire or shotgun only and this little round has put plenty down on these public areas where my choices are limited. I’ve never had buyers remorse with any firearm! How about you? The only issue now is ammo availability, but it doesn’t matter what caliber you are looking for right now it is all scarce for the most part.

I watch the rifles on gunbroker for a a couple months and never did buy one. At the time they were cheaper than I could find down town. I just sold 500 rounds of ammo over the weekend. If you want a 17, get the 17 rem. It will do 1000 FPS more than the 17wsm.

I own a Savage .17hmr. The clip/magazines are junk. It took some mods to get them to load each time. Even then they foul up every now and then.

Is there a better version of this caliber?

I have a savage B mag, the bolt is junk but it will shoot good and it was cheap. I bought it because ai had a 450 dollar gift card to use up. Great truck and boat gun if I lose it or break it I will just get another cheap one.

My brother has one. They are good guns. I've only shot a box with it

Re: .17 Win Super Mag - 03/02/21 05:18 PM

i have the Savage. It doesn't shoot near as good as I would like it to but it is plenty accurate enough for coyote sized targets. But mine is the light barrel- I'm guessing the heavy barrel would shoot better.

I have a Savage B mag light barrel it is not a target gun but shoots good enough for hunting. I have watched many Youtube videos and tried all the mods except replacing the synthetic stock with a wood stock and none have helped with accuracy. I would buy the heavy barrel with the Boyds stock if you can find it and if buying a Savage.

Only reason I prefer the 17 Hornet is that if push comes to shove ya can make brass from the parent case.

Re: .17 Win Super Mag - 03/03/21 12:03 PM

I also have the Savage B mag. I'm pleased with the gun considering what I paid. Two issues with this model: The bolt feels like it's fully closed when it isn't yet. Pull down the handle to lock it closed and the bolt digs into the stock. I have a dent in the stock from doing this so many times. I've never had a problem with the rotary magazine not feeding but it's difficult to snap into place. Like the bolt, it feels like it's in but it isn't. I've had the bolt fall out on the first shot a bunch of times.

I bought it when searching for a .17HMR and liked that it was a little hotter. Ammo is expensive. I paired mine with a Nikon Buckmaster 3x9-40 scope. Accuracy is good - 1MOA out to 100 yds. Beyond that the bullet is getting blown around quite a bit.

Snowpa I picked one up 1 1/2 years ago for just over 200 new. Savage. Topped it with a Leupold 6x.
Besides using it in MN I used it during two of three western runs this winter. As said above out to 200 yards it’s very good and also a great truck gun.
Mine certainly likes the 25grain ammo the best. If you want to sell any of that weight I’d be interested.
* a note. 17 Ammo is made by Winchester and their quality control is poor. I get at least 2 duds per box of 50.

I have the Ruger model 77 in the .17 WSM. Nice piece. I have not shot it enough only shooting one fox with it but the fox was plenty dead after being hit behind the shoulder with a 20 grain pill.

Re: .17 Win Super Mag - 03/03/21 01:12 PM

I have had two savages in the 17wsm. The first was the light barrel and it was a tack driver. The problem was the bolt and firing mechanism, lots of misfires and jammed bullets after the shot. Sold that one and bought another savage 17wsm with the bull barrell and so far it has been an excellent gun. It is 6 years newer than the first one I bought so I am hoping they corrected their bolt issues.

I have the savage b mag in heavy barrel. Love it so far. Accurate and fun to shoot. Got animals with it. If you can find a ruger m 77 in 17 wsm you will probably like it a little more. I got use to the bolt.

Re: .17 Win Super Mag - 03/03/21 07:57 PM

nothing wrong with the rimfires , but it alwasy seemed to me the biggest reason to keep pushing the envelop in rimfire was because so many states had centerfire night hunting restrictions or some other sort of restriction like no hunting with center fire rifles during deer season but hunting with a rimfire meant you weren't hunting for deer then could hunt with a rifle rimfire durring shotgun only dear season.

if it weren't for so many fish and game and dnr restrictions and any game could be taken with any rifle you would probably see a lot less diversity in rifles think of all the strait wall cartridges that just wouldn't be without states setting up strait wall rifle cartridge zones.

Interesting. I've put a few hundred rounds though mine and I don't think I've ever had a dud.

I also have a Ruger 77 in .220 Swift that I bought in 1980.

I'd have to be pretty desperate to ever sell it.

.17 super mag seems like a terrific caliber for raccoon calling. Minimal damage but still a lot of knock down power so they can't get back in the hole. In the northern states that is where coons are bigger than house cats.
