it's now how small your town is it is how well behaved it's citizenry is.

in my home town it the sheriffs office was off the side of the fire department a couple rooms a place to meet with people and for the deputy to do paperwork the county had a sub station about 6 miles out of town to serve the west end of the county if they needed a holding cell they drove you out there.

We don't have any kind of government office in our village. Just two competing zip codes, we don't rate even our own zip code.

Re: Small Town, How Small? - 03/19/21 12:38 PM

Up until about 10 years ago our Town had no Police Dept. Any crimes/accidents etc. were handled easily by the Sherriff's Dept. One night the only drugstore in Town was broken into by some out of Town druggies, caught by the Sherriff's Dept. The pharmacist was on the Town Board. He decided we need a Police Dept. Now we have 3 squad cars and 6 cops with a union plus the Chief. We have no more or less crime than before. Most emergencies are still handled by the volunteer Fire Dept. and paramedics. The cops walk around at events, direct traffic at the July 4 parade and issue speeding and parking tickets to tourists to justify their existence. Real crimes are referred to Sherriff detectives. The pharmacist retired, quit the Town Board and moved to a place with lower taxes. LOL

We dont have a municipal police force and the sheriff has no sub station here. Pretty quiet most of the time. When its not things just kinda take care of thierselves.

Re: Small Town, How Small? - 03/20/21 01:00 AM

I'm not sure what to consider a town.

My township has a municipal building, no police department, two guys who work 2 days a week at the local convenience center (dump) and 3 days a week as the road crew, clean up crew, etc.

The township 100yds from me has no municipal building, a K-8 school with 100 students, and the mayor, treasurer, and tax assessor work out of their living rooms. The town council has been the same 3 farmers for 20 years because they can't talk anyone else into running. They take turns being the mayor.

But, 15 minutes away I have a Walmart and a "town" of 20,000 people.

No stop light in the whole county or the county west of us. County seat has about 1800 people, 2800 in the county. About 100 people in the zip code.

Yup, I stayed there 2 winters 97 and 98 lion hunting. I would imagine just about anyone crossing the Big Horns has probably stopped for gas or food when they rolled through. smile

It is beautiful country but I always wondered if the winters wouldn't weed most people out. Of course trackin lions might warm a mans blood no matter what the wind chill.
