22 hornet opinions - 03/24/21 11:10 PM

Hello all, what would your honest opinions be on the 22 hornet as a cartridge? I have a friend that is going to sell one and would like some input on it's performance for fur animals. I will more than likely use it for wolves and wolverines. Is it a pretty accurate round? Thanks!

I have a Ruger varmint/target 22hornet. Killed probably around 50 yotes with it. Super accurate with hornady vmax. My shots are close. Inside 50 yards. Most DRT or with in 15 - 25 yards depending on shot placement. I did put a volquartzen sear in it. Dropped the trigger pull from 6.5lbs to a crisp 1 3/4lbs.

Another plus is that I can usually find ammo.

nice! I will check how much they are willing to part with it, may be able to find some ammo. live in the villages so no ammo at the local stores

Low noise, low recoil. Good out to 150 yards. Reloading can be a bit tricky. Once set up, no problem. One pound of powder goes a long way. I wished I never sold my ruger 77. Sarge

Re: 22 hornet opinions - 03/24/21 11:38 PM

I like mine. Great fox and cat rifle. Have killed badgers with it no problem. Coyotes are tough. Can run a long ways hit pretty hard. I dont shoot at them unless they are within 100 yards and Im confident I won't miss a heart or head shot. Coyote here weighs about 30 pounds. I never shot a wolf but if I was using the hornet I would want a real good shot. I have seen them in the zoo. Big animal lots of fur. Work good for badgers. I never seen a wolverine outside a zoo either. Wolverine has a reputation for being tough. So does a badger. Badger really isnt though. They die pretty easy if you shoot the front third of them. Even at a couple hundred yards.

Awesome! I have taken wolves with 223, 204, 22 mag, and 17 wsm so far. Was looking to try out the 22 hornet but haven't had an opportunity to find one for a great deal. will see how much they want for it and may get it if it isn't pricey

I am watching a bunch of them on gunbroker, looking at the savage or ruger

Re: 22 hornet opinions - 03/25/21 12:57 AM

It seems to me the hornet would be great for fox, bobcat, and lynx, a little light for yotes but adequate at close range, but way too light for wolf and wolverine. Just my opinion but I think you should be thinking more like .22-250 or .243/6mm Rem class cartridge for the size animals you are targeting. Maybe even consider a 6.5 Grendel. I sure would wait until some of the AK guys chime in before pulling the trigger on the hornet.

Re: 22 hornet opinions - 03/25/21 04:14 AM

check ammo availability for your area or AK

while available here it is typically not the corner store , hardware store , or big box store carrying 22 hornet

guns specific stores or outdoors and hunting stores are more likely to have 22 Hornet

my great grandfather thought it was the perfect deer gun , although he shot most of his deer while tending orchard and neck shot them. he liked low recoil and relatively low noise and at the time it was a flat shooter , not as much so now. but in the 1940s before the faster flatter 22s came around

great if you are a reloader.

if it is a light handy and accurate package at a good price , I would , if it is a heavy and expensive gun that will sit at home , I would pass.

I have a Savage 340 in 22 Hornet. I like it. Don't have many long shots up here in the woods.

Re: 22 hornet opinions - 03/25/21 11:45 AM

It’s rough on foxes. Yotes are fine so long as they’re within the limits of the cartridge. I’ve killed plenty of deer with one when I owned it. Foolishly sold it. Wish I hadn’t. Awesome turkey round too.

Cz, savage, & 2 ruger 77's. I have spent a lot of time with the 22 hornet. However, if you already have a 223, I would stay with that and buy a reloading setup. There's a 22 hornet hiding in that 223 case, you just have to coax it out.

The best time to buy a new gun is every time you get a chance to buy a new gun.

Didn’t matter what it was loaded with. The 40 gr ballistic tip, 45 gr Sierra hornet bullet, 35 gr v-max. All of them would turn a fox into something the required a seamstress to take a look at. Now, it was run fairly hard but it still did more damage to foxes than I’d liked. Pretty much stuff to rimfire for foxes if we were planning to skin them after that.

Re: 22 hornet opinions - 03/26/21 12:50 PM

I have the H&R handy rifle single shot version. love it. I use the factory soft points for foxes they work just fine. I've killed coyotes with factory soft points also but prefer the hornady Vmax for them. Here in PA all my shots are within 100 yards.

I bought a Winchester 43 in 22 hornet and the guy gave me close to 1000 rounds of ammo. It's really fun to shoot and very accurate.

I used the same bullet in mine but paired up with lil'gun. Dime size groups at 100 yds. Was not effective on yotes with frontal chest shots.

Re: 22 hornet opinions - 03/26/21 02:01 PM

I have a .218 Bee, that is in the same class as the hornet that runs a 35gr VMax at right around 3000 fps. With Lil Gun it is at a modest pressure that a Winchester 43 handles well. Works well on coyotes. Haven’t had an opportunity at a fox. Not many around here.

Is what I wrote. Through the side, into the heart, not through the front of the chest. If looking straight at you, a bullet straight into the windpipe and into the spine works real good if its head is up. If the head is down, just below and in the middle of the ears is good. I only shoot coyotes with my hornet when I am very confident of bullet placement.

Great fox bobcat badger round though.

I have settled on the ruger mk2 77, unfortunately it will be a 7 mm remington magnum. Will just need to get a hornet sometime this summer or fall time.

found a 22-250 for a good price so will have that one sighted in for seal hunting and winter hunting next winter

Big step up from a 22 Hornet.

Re: 22 hornet opinions - 03/29/21 10:38 PM

may still try get a 22 hornet this summer or next fall. I think I will like this one. Talked with my fur buyer and got their opinions on how the round is for wolves. Will like it for hunting wolves if I need to shoot at them a long ways off. If I had it this winter I probably have a couple more wolves if I had it.
