Should I sale out on some of my guns ?

Should I sale out on some of my guns ? - 04/04/21 06:37 PM

Need some good advice. I am going to be 62 in Sept. Not in the best of health. Both knees replaced and one knee did not turn out well at all 5 years ago. Scar tissue got me even after 4 months of therapy ( 3 months is standard ) the left knee turned out better but hurts most of the time because right knee did not turn out well. Looks like I have 3 years to work as a Manufacturing Mgr. I get to ride scooter around Because of bad knees. Still on concrete all day. Dr said will not get better. No wife , no kids to leave these guns too. It is getting more and more difficult to go even deer hunting let alone coyote hunting or trapping. Just don’t have the get up and go. Have all this night vision and thermal vision For coyote hunting and have not used it in 3 years. I have alot of AR15 rifles and have the same calibers in bolt guns. 2 of everything. Everything is all safe queens. Most of the guns never been hunted with.
Question..... I think in my situation I should sale off the AR15 rifles all but one and just keep the bolt action rifles ? No other time in my life time could a gun owner sale a rifle for more than he paid for it till right now. As Harry Potterfields wife says on his TV commercials “ how many guns does one man need “ ? I hate to do it but when I retire what the heck am going to do with all this stuff and with Biden tax coming for sure on AR15 rifles and magazines who can afford 7 AR15 and AR10 rifles ? I sure cannot on SS. Plus Biden‘s law might freeze you from even selling them to some one else or do a 200.00 per gun buy back. If people think Government will give you fair market value for your gun I think your crazy. There is many many here on this forum that are in the same spot in life and wondering what to do. I think down deep I know it’s time ? Marty

I'm not suggesting you sell or keep them, but if you are going to sell this would certainly be a good time to do it. Also sounds like you need to make your will if you haven't to see that who you want gets your things.

you're not JUST going to live on SS, are you?

Thats a hard spot to be in, for sure.

Any of your old hunting partners have kids? Close friends that might share the memories of past adventures?

Sibling or niece or nephew?

Even if your not close to them now this may open the door to a relationship that you can build upon over the next few years.

Maybe donate one or two for raffles for kids or trapping association

If you know/feel it's time, and you can't hunt much any more, then possibly sell them before any new regulations get put in place. You could put the money towards something you need more. No siblings, nieces or nephews? Still might be fun to go to a range though. Whatever you decide, I wish you the best.

If you're not using them. Sell em. Today you'll get a great price and you can use the cash for something more important to you right now.

Good market now to sell if your not using them I’d move some then, don’t sell them cheap no reason to really.

put them on an auction. get with an auctioneer. he can get you in the right one. Even in normal times guns usually bring the most money at auction. People like to have guns at their auction. Brings in a lot of buyers to have a few on the sale bill.

Firearms are in a strong market right now. With 3 more years or work and more than likely continued erosion in mobility, hunting and usage may well go down or be gone totally. With no heirs, selling now you can optimize value and still sell to who you want to. There may be ventures or hobbies you can invest the firearm's revenue into that may fit your physical abilities better.

It's hard to imagine a time that selling would get you a better price. I know folks in better shape if a bit older that have sold guns they have had for years but no longer use because this is a good time to do it. A private sale should get you more $ than a dealer will give so if your state law allows it that is a good option.

Re: Should I sale out on some of my guns ? - 04/04/21 08:20 PM

you can put them on an estate auction LEGALLY here in KS. I see your location lists N.D. I feel confident guns are still sold at estate sales there also. Like I said, people like guns at their sale. brings in more buyers.

I have been selling some of mine here and there-downsizing a bit.
Good time to sell-you could sell some and keep some,or sell them all and buy one or two new ones and a whack of ammo.
I think you have several options at the present time.
A will is a good idea even if you dont have family, you can make sure proceeds go to charity of your choosing instead of to the gov't.

Re: Should I sale out on some of my guns ? - 04/04/21 08:45 PM

I think the hand writing Is on the wall in my situation My brother owns over 100 guns , said he don’t need any more guns. Brother has no children he is in the same boat as I am in. Not going to Leave them to strangers who will sale them at a garage sale for 100.00 each. I Guess use the money I get from guns towards one last new truck in 3 years to drive me to nursing home or funeral home which ever comes first. Average age of hunters are getting older , Less and less target shooters. A lot of people buying pistols and 1 Ar15 rifle for defense. My gun range membership news letter came out last Friday. Guess what.... our membership went from 683 to 385 they said last year. I think 11 people signed the sign in book From Jan to Feb and I was one of them. What does that tell you. No one is shooting. When I went Target shooting a guy got out of truck shot 11 shots out of a 9mm. He was at range 5 minutes. Guy ask me I’d if I would pick up his target when I picked up my target. Said 22 dollars of ammo 1 hrs worth of work for me. He said just wanted to make sure his gun was still sighted in. Said he is good till next year or till he has to shoot someone. Unbelievable. Biden with one stroke of the pen could make AR15 rifles or any gun worthless. Biden could say no Private Sales only can sale back to Government at their price. I can tell you it will not be be more than $200.00 per AR15 rifle. Or put the big tax on AR15 and magazines. They are talking $200.00 per magazine. Will I have 91 Magazines that are 20 plus rounders. I am not going to pay $18,200 To keep my own magazines and then another 1200.00 for ( 6 ) AR15 /AR10 To keep My own guns. Keep one for the Coyote night vision and thermal vision stuff if I even feel Like ever going hunting again. Every one says oh no one is going to take my gun away from me....Sure they will. Go ahead and bury it in your back yard and put a rock over it and watch the rock and gun rust to nothing under it. Because if you ever wanted to take it out Just 1 time your a outlaw. How long do you think it will take for a neigbor or even a family member to squeal on you that you have a AR15 ? People will turn you in to have a 35.00 traffic ticket Suspended for the tip. I sold my AR15 350 Legend last week at LGS shop for $1250.00 In 1 day. 10% consignment not to bad consignment charge.Looks like I will be packing up Truck tonight full of guns. Between my health and the Liberal Demos It don’t make since to hang on too them. It will be a sad day but the hand writing is on the wall. MD

If I were in your situation I'd sell the stuff I felt were a problem and to those I know who would be interested, sad advice, still though, wish we never had to consider such a thing !

What kind of thermal do you have and would be interested as one who would use it !

Re: Should I sale out on some of my guns ? - 04/04/21 09:34 PM

like others said probably no better time to sell

having your will in order is good , my will says my guns go to my kids evenly split and that they may never sell them only gift them to family.
my lawyer informed me that the kids could actually do anything they wanted once it was theirs , I told him but they will know my intentions and there will be no mistaking my intentions.

I wrote that will before all of my kids were even born , I have one adult child now with more soon to follow. my current plan is the day I die if it is a death I see coming from old age or known disease. there only be a few if any guns left that I have not given away keep what I am using at the time and give grandkids as they get old enough guns or who ever I think they will best serve.

when my Grandpa moved into a senior apartment the year before he died he gave his shotgun to my uncle , he new he had no need for it in the apartment.

Its much better to be able to sell because you want to instead of have to. Sell them and enjoy the money.

I'll die with mine before I let a politician make mind up for me to sell them. If you really need the money sell. If not hang on for the ride, I am!

Single shot shotguns were getting around 200 last week at an auction I attended. They werent in primo shape either or top shelf names either. I couldnt believe it- use to pick them up for 50-75 bucks.

Re: Should I sale out on some of my guns ? - 04/04/21 10:26 PM

Sell, however depending on your financial situation maybe a raffle for a couple of guns would be a good idea.

Maybe I'm off base with this but with the dwindling numbers of outdoorsman maybe having a raffle would help. If a member extends theirs or a new member would join an organization whether it's a state trapping or hunting association or your local sportsman's club with a membership for say 3 years they could get a raffle ticket for say $5 bucks. The regular price of the ticket could be $20 or $25. I'm sure some on here that have organized something like this could come up with an idea.

You could probably do that with the traps and other stuff you have as well. Traps right now aren't in high demand so I don't know what you'd come up with for that for a raffle,

Maybe it is because I live in Idaho but I can nearly always buy guns at a used gun shop or pawn shop for less than I can estate or auctions. Maybe there is something to people simply being "stupid" that is catching.

Sold off some of mine last fall, nothing I would consider to buy back. Prices paid are stupid now.

Yep auction or consignment is the way to go. My LGS only charges a 10% Fee on the total price. some auctions charge 20% for the seller and even a 20% fee to buyer if buyer is buying on Internet. Now that is crazy ! MD

Re: Should I sale out on some of my guns ? - 04/05/21 02:13 AM

lots of people buying guns and the funny thing is that the majority of those people will turn them if if told they must. They think they are 'getting ready' but they will cave right in .....

I only have a few firearms but I can only use one at a time so I do not need many.

I'd sell the ones you are sure you won't be using and take the proceeds to buy ammo for the ones you will use.

Might sell off the "fun" guns that you don't really use that are just dust collectors. Wouldn't sell off any hunting or self defense guns.

Wouldn't rush to sell anything off unless you really need the cash now or if you think there's something better to invest your money in. I think it's still doubtful that Biden can get anything through the Senate on guns but even if he did, now isn't the time to panic sell.

You can only shoot one, maybe two, at a time. I would sell if I had the situation you presented. Easy for me to say as I contemplate having to buy another safe, lol. You will get a good price for anything you can live without now though.

No, just the seller. Some equipment sales just charge a buyers premium with no charge to the seller, but you have to have high dollar stuff in it.

Rock Island gun auction the biggest in the USA has 4-6 Gun auctions a year. They have a big commission for the buyers and sellers of firearms. Look it up. A lot of auctions doing that now. A guy better ask the questions before he signs up with them. MD

Definitely a tough situation to be in. Whatever you decide please consider the "trail". We may get to a time very soon, if not already, where our every move is tracked. JMO, but certain items of freedom need to go underground or underwater as we so commonly joke, if you know what I mean.

Re: Should I sale out on some of my guns ? - 04/05/21 03:48 PM

I wouldn't put much store in reduces gun club and range numbers. Ammo is to high and almost impossible to find even at the crazy prices. Why pay for a club membership you wont use? Most wont be willing to shoot up their limited ammo.

If your going to sell now would be a good time. That said there are lots of ways they will last decades properly stored. They could be put back for the next generation willing to fight for that old piece of parchment known as the Constitution.

As far as getting ratted out. Don't let it be known what you have beyond the most trusted and even then have something in reserve.

Re: Should I sale out on some of my guns ? - 04/05/21 06:04 PM

Only you can answer that one Marty. I've been debating the same thing except for some family guns that were passed down to me and will be passed on down to my nephews.

The rest, I'm not sure what to do yet....money in the bank I figure until I need money.
