Outdoor life magazine

I know they dropped their print edition, but as I recall, they used to have 12 issues a year. I just read that at one point, they reduced it down to 9 issues and then it went to quarterly issues. When did they go from monthly down to 9 print issues per year ?


Can we still get old back issues of that magazine ?

I miss the old Sports Afield magazine
Had some great covers

Anyone know if Fur Fish & Game, is going to go to just a Digital Magazine ??

I was taking OI and F&S and they had the same articles. Let the go.

Outdoor Life, Field and Stream and Sports Afield, haven't looked at one in decades, found them boring years ago.

they were all about selling junk to the gullible.

Got my first issue around 1963 had subscription for around 30 years then the articles were the same only the names change. It got to be a lot more advertising then stories.

Yup, all mags are afraid to publish anything about killing fish or game nowadays. I get Wyoming Wildlife which is strictly pictorial but has some decent articles about parts of the state to visit.

Anyone that has subscriptions to any magazines over the last thirty to fifty years has had to notice the same things in nearly all of them. They have become much skinnier, much less content but about the same or more advertising. And the quality of the articles has tailed off. Also, many have reduced the number of annual issues.

I dropped most of them many years ago. The final nail in the coffin for Outdoor Life was when they replaced Pat McManus' column Exit Laughing with celebrity interviews. The first one I read was an interview with former UFC fighter turned WWE wrestler Brock Lesnar. Why, I thought to myself, are they interviewing this big, dumb oaf? Turns out he used to hunt pheasants on the farm back in Nebraska. Was good enough for the Outdoor Life editors to include him in their hunting magazine. That was the last issue I read.

I still get FFG, Trapper's World and a couple of woodworking magazines but dropped the rest.

I still enjoy FFG.

When any organization stop printing there publication I drop them.

I am of the age that seeing an outdoor magazine in the mailbox was a really big deal. I would get really excited to bring it in the house, sit down and do a quick scan of the articles and pictures it contained, and then put it aside for reading thoroughly at my leisure...mostly during my morning constitutional.

I don't get the same excitement, nor do I learn very well with the digital versions. Through my whole life I was an avid reader of a variety of books and authors and really enjoy and absorb words and stories on paper. I don't get what I am looking for from a computer screen. I do my best to read and learn from digital sources, but the information just doesn't stick as well as it does on paper.

I agree. nothing beats a real magazine, and I think they will be with us for some time to come. Its important to support them because they are in many ways a voice for us outdoorsmen/women.

I have some old old FFG magazines and its amazing how little they have changed over the years. Its still a good solid magazine with a good variety of articles every month.

Friend gave me some magazines OL in them was more a Deer Life never looked at the year nothing but grunting, wheezing rattling branches and pawing leaves if any of that scat worked I'd have deer following me all over the woods

I was a field and stream guy growing up. Always couldn't wait for the magazine to be delivered. Cancelled the subscription years ago.

Someone got me a Field and Stream the other day and it was an issue focused on rehashing the modern classic articles.

I read that thing almost from cover to cover. I have to say Bill Heavey's Lillyfish will remain unread by me, as I remember bawling reading it years ago. Reading something that sad and powerful once is enough for me.

There is something about a magazine, and this current article was like reconnecting with an old friend. David E Petzal is still there, and a few others.


Might re-subscribe to be honest.

Bill Heavey has written some really great articles. Every once and a while he really nails it. One of his Sportsman’s Life articles about a young guy fishing and missing a huge bass is one of my all time favorites.

There is one article he did, I don't think it was very well known where he goes on a hunt by himself, ends up shooting a...deer I think, and then spends the night sleeping in the back of the truck with it, and the one line that stuck with me for whatever reason was

"the lucky among us sleep with the dead".

And I have never been able to find the article.

Bill Heavey is awesome. Guys like Pat McManus and Gene Hill are national treasures.
