Yep , the .270 is the best caliber grin

My model 70 .270 has been good to me . It is perfect for antelope and deer

I have killed more elk with a bow than the .270 . The .270 does a fine job with good shot placement and I have never lost one , but I would agree that poor shot placement could result in a lost elk. Those elks are tough bass turds !


From what I've witnessed all these years of elk hunting I think I'd rather be shot with the .270 than an arrow if I had to choose

nothing wrong with it but is it better than any other cartridge in its class, nope it ain't, Chet Atchinson said it best, its a little bit more than adequate coyote rifle, Chet was an elk hunters and guide and used a 338 win mag, for his hunting he was correct, for whitetail hunters the 270 is no better than a 6mm or 25/06. the argument that the 270 is best has no merit.

I grew up reading Jack O'Connor and I took his word that the .270 was a great cartridge: https://www.americanrifleman.org/articles/2016/4/20/the-270-winchester-cartridge/

It has been my go to gun and I recommend it.

In the last 46 years I have killed jack rabbits coyotes prairie dogs badgers crows deer elk and bears with mine. Killed every animal i ever shot with it.

When Jack was hunting, bullet selection was limited. With today's technology in bullets, many calibers are adequate for big game that may not have been back in the day. I'd like like to hear Jack's opinion if he had 5 years of hunting being able to use Nosler Partitions.

the 270 has killed every big game animal in north america and its parent caliber the 30-06 has killed every animal in the world from what i understand shot placement is key with any caliber you could shot a 338 or a 375 but if you miss the vitals on any critter and you will end up with a wounded animal and a possible lost trophy

Killed all the deer I shot with it quite well.

Can't say it had any better results than all the ones shot with my 243, 7mm08, 30/06, 300 black out or anything else from bow to muzzle loader.

I can't see a dime's worth of difference between a 243 through 30/06 in reactions of deer shot within 200 yard are the same. Wound channels may be larger or smaller but reactions the same. Most drop within 30 yards if not instantly.

Good point. The 270 is one caliber I've never cared for. Ive guided a few hunters who had a 270 and have seen some moose / bear shot with them. The 30/06 or even the 308 produces much faster kills all things considered. I watched my mother in law shoot a 63 inch bull 7 times with a 270 before he went down. Range was under 100-yards too.

Like you pointed out, the new breed of bullets make a huge difference though. The fastest I have ever seen a grizzly killed was with a 270 with Barnes bullets. That bear didnt take one step after the first shot. Anyone who has any experience with grizzly knows that happens very rarely. I still wouldnt buy a 270, much better calibers out there in my opinion, but with good bullets, they will get the job done.

As stated, bullet technology seems to have surpassed picking a gun caliber. It has evened out the playing field on a lot of calibers. I like my .270's. Have killed only whitetail as far as big game goes with everything from bow to 30/06. Shot placement with anything is the key whether it be blade, slug or bullet.
