75HP Evinrude

Hey all, I had a learning moment a couple of years back when I bought my first boat. Used the motor tilt tabs for trailering instead of a transom saver, and broke one of the legs off and screwed up the swivel bracket. The motor is a 1979 Evinrude 75HP, model 75943R, Serial No. J0001976. I believe the swivel bracket needed is a 15", but I know a 20" was also made. Two questions:

Where exactly do I measure to see if I've got the 15" or the 20" part? I believe what I've got is a short-shaft, so I'm thinking I'll need the 15"?

Does anyone happen to have an outboard bone-yard that might have one of these swivel mounts they're looking to get rid of?

Easy way to measure for short shaft (15") vs long shaft (20") is to measure the boat transom size. From the looks in your picture it looks like your transom is 15".

They also make an extra long shaft for sailboats which I believe is 26"

Am I measuring the bracket and transom correctly? To me, it looks like a 15" swivel bracket on a 20" transom.

The cavitation plate just above the prop should be about level with the bottom of the boat. You'll have to put the motor down to see. If it has another cavitation plate about 5 inches above the bottom one, it's a 20.

You could also look up your serial # on Iboats and it will tell you what shaft you have. Looks like lower unit has been replaced on yours but that shouldn't change what bracket you need.

Bernie, what is a cavitation plate? I'm guessing it's the plate above the prop (red arrow)? Is the blue arrow showing a second cavitation plate?

If you post a pic of the ID plate I can find out what length it is for ya. The mount you need should be the same on both length shafts though.

Unless I'm looking in the wrong spot on iBoat, it doesn't directly identify if it's a long or short shaft.

Your right. looks like they started incorporating length in model # in 1980. You have my kind of luck, missed it by a year.

I have a 1977 85hp Evinrude and its a long shaft. Mine is a V-4 but outside mount and shaft are the same. I'll go take some pics like yours and see if that helps.

That is a long shaft motor.

My motor looks exactly like yours as far as shaft and lower unit and mine is a long shaft. It didn’t come with power tilt and trim in 1977 so we kind of Frankenstein’d it on to an 80’s mount with power trim. There is no ID plate on the 80s mount (blue part) so I don’t know what it came off of as far as shaft length goes. It I’m sure yours is long. Sounds like there were very few shorts made in 85hp and it wouldn’t work on your 20” transom if it was short anyway.
