I have had both hips replaced couple years apart, but both done threw side?? Had them do nerve block not knock me all way out, Was up and walking on them same day. Doc said was more about how doctor learned to do them than any difference in recovery time. People in PT said same thing more about how you can move and what you do don't do. Recovery time is same either way..So that is what I know about that.
I have been one of the lucky ones that has zero pain since surgery. I'm a long ways from ever running again. But that is whole different issue..
Good luck to you.. if you are hurting as bad as I was you maybe amazed when it's over and done.

Grandpa , hope your replacement goes well. I had one about 8 years ago. Do all your exercises. They are very important, to get your muscles built back up. If you really want to know how they do the replacement . Google hip operation. I watched this, about an hour long , I wanted to know what was going to happen. Quite graphic , so if if you are used to a bit of blood , you will find it interesting. My scar is on the side. Good Luck, old243

I had both done at the same time and was the anterior I believe, it's the one where you don't have as many problems with the new hip popping out if you make the wrong movement or exercise before it's healed up.My surgery went well, was up right out of recovery (forced, lol) and was doing PT the next day, Do the PT, it seems easy if your in any shape at all but do it.
They say you can't drive for 4-6 weeks, but at 4 you should be good if your off the pain meds.
My jailor made me wait till the 6 week check, I asked the doc if there was anything I couldn't do, and he said nope, just don't do anything too stupid...

I only took the pain meds for a couple days, YMMV, but don't try to live with any pain.

If you were gimpin' around like I was before my surgery, you'll say why didn't I do it sooner. I was walking 18 holes of golf 5 weeks after the replacement. Good luck to you.

Best of luck! I have had both done in the last 5 years, Absolutely no regrets, just happy I went ahead and did it...both times. Prior to surgery I was in a lot of pain with both, but mostly the second one, which was a complicated one. I went home the next morning with no pain. Got the approval to drive after 4 weeks.

As everyone else has said, do the exercises they tell you to. Take the pain meds if you need to but keep in mind they might bind you up a little. That's the time to get some cheap stool softeners from WalMart. Everything will be working fine then. After the second one my Doc told me to not do anything that hurts...simple as that.

Hope it goes great! Let us know how you are doing.

I had a total hip replacement with a lateral approach 5 weeks ago this coming Monday im getting around better than before surgery .I walked over a half mile Thursday with a half bucket of feed . That thigh was tired but not sore .So much better than before .
I know this dosnt answer your question about anterior approach but I'm excited at the progress of my recovery and hope you have the same speedy recovery

I’m in those surgeries weekly. The anterior approach has been around for a decade. It has great benefits for the patient. Less chance of dislocation because not having to take down as much tissue to access where the surgeon has to work. Posterior is the most common way patients dislocate. It is more difficult for the doctor but new and better anterior specific instruments and training have helped make the procedure very reproducible. You should do well.

My wife put off hip replacement and put it off. Finally, when she couldn't take the pain anymore, she had it done. Now, she's kicking herself for putting up with all the needless suffering. She said she should have done it sooner. She said her hip felt better post surgery than it did prior to the surgery. The incision was sore for a couple of days. She stopped using a cane after 5 days.
Good luck, prayers for you.

Mom just had hers done six weeks ago. She's already off the cane/walker and moving on her own for the most part. Says she doesn't knwo why she waited so long. Biggest thing for her was she spent 3 months getting ready for it by doing light workouts and then was mentally driven to get moving again as fast as possible because she missed working in the garden.

Isn't that the truth? My wife said the same thing, she didn't know why she waited so long? Glad to hear your mom is doing so well.

I had both done, one in 2008, the other in 2012. No problems, healed up quick. After the second surgery, I went trout fishing 15 days later.

Surgery went well. This is 3rd day after surgery, starting to feel some relief today. Still using walker. At 74, I didn’t really know what to expect for an older person. Thanks again for all your inputs.

You’ll feel much better when the staples come out. For me, that was day 13 both times.

MY brother got one done at 74 and he sure looks and moves younger now (a year later). We were about ready to euthanize the poor sob.
