I always found night crawlers the best bait for them.
Just a pinch of worm is all you need.
When I ran trot lines for them,I could bait 6 hooks with one
crawler.

bullhead make great bait, but I prefer green sunfish as bait. grin

JK it is all true for catching flathead. As for your purpose, worms has always been my go to for catching bait fish=bullhead.

Is there anything a bullhead won't eat?

Small pieces of chicken liver on a half ounce jig so they don't swallow the hook. Or small strips of cut bait on the same size jig. My fishing buddy James showed me the jig trick when we started fishing together 10-15 years ago I scoffed at using such a big jig and stuck to my old ways using a slip sinker and hook but he out fished me every time and never took time to re-tie. I switched and never will use a plain hook again for bullheads.

But yeah little chunks of chicken liver lol

You're already using the best bait for them. Are you using them for bait or human consumption?

I used to get in a bullhead tournament Last weekend of April for many years on Black Lake. Our record as of when I left a few years ago was 21 guys cought five thousand three hundred bullhead in two nights of fishing. We all had hands that looked like boxing gloves by the end of the weekend.Bullhead will hit the leeches just as good as they do worms,,but they cant get the leeches off the hook.Lot less re-baiting hooks. We kept them alive in cattle tubs and sold them to help pay for the following years cabin rentals. We rented every cabin they have at McLears Campground.

I've caught bullheads on every sort of live and cut fish and meat baits I've tried. I like scrap chunks of venison the best, because it stays on the hook well and can often be used for multiple catches.
