Sure can. Just as long as it is not a power vent unit.

Heat rises if you had a water source above the heater that should heat water higher up or have a outside tank and heat it with a weed burner or other heat source maybe.

I don't know there is a water heater without some kind of power to run a thermostat other than a turkey fryer and a pot. How do you plan on getting the water from the heater to the shower?

Re: Propane water heater? - 04/11/21 06:01 PM

This might help, I have one in a cabin on the property, uses propane and (2) d cell batteries to ignite the pilot, it's been in about a year and no problems

Re: Propane water heater? - 04/11/21 06:07 PM

Old tank gas systems used an independant pilot and ignition and did not need electricity to work. You can still buy some like that, but you may have to shop around some.

There is no plug going to LP heaters that I have ever used. The pilot goes down to pilot light when the temp is reached a push button ignition lighter requires no electric a guy could light the burner with a BBQ lighter.

Re: Propane water heater? - 04/11/21 06:13 PM

No power needed to the one I installed in my house in 2009. It replaced one that didn't need power either. The new one ignites by a snap switch that doesn't need electricity. The thermostat is independent, too. Got the new one at home depot. I thought all propane/gas water heaters were independent of any need for outside electricity. Unless, you have a remote thermostat, which I've never heard of.

Just have the plumber run a line to it? I guess .

I'm with Law Dog. I have a propane water heater in my house. It uses a push button striker to light the pilot. The pilot stays lit even without power. I also have a propane tankless at my camp and it uses D batteries for ignition so as long as I have water flow it works. It was very inexpensive as well.

I am just afraid, the 5 GPm type of D battery kind want have enough water pressure. And they all cut off = For safety at around 15 or 20 mins . So I would like to stay with propane that I could light. Then just blow out pilot light and turn off gas when I leave

Re: Propane water heater? - 04/11/21 06:36 PM

Not knowing your set up so I’ll go with a primitive set up. A water source like a fuel tank upright should increase the pressure with a water heater below it so gravity feed, the more water the more pressure you would think also reducing the pipe might increase the pressure also as you get closer to the shower head.

Without constant water flow you would need to pump water up to the tank with a small generator and pump once full you would be good to go, if you have city water constant flow even better. You could tap hot off with a second faucet set up.

Re: Propane water heater? - 04/11/21 06:42 PM

Thanks Law Dog Well dug was going to cost 7500 dollars plus I would have to use generator FOR well pump. So I am going to be on or in middle of 37 acre tract of land. Water line is on Old county dirt road. Will have to run line about 550 yards or so to cabin. So my guess is about 3000 dollars to get water to it

Re: Propane water heater? - 04/11/21 07:02 PM

Make real sure they bury that waterline good. Even though freezing isn't much down here the rains washing away the cover dirt will expose them to get run over. I been fighting about 3/4 mile of waterline since been here. Been replacing with PEX as reworking the driveway.

You could use a 55 gallon black drum with solar heat with a weed burner for back up but I’m lazy that way. LOL

Re: Propane water heater? - 04/11/21 07:50 PM

I have same H2O heater in my house except it is natural gas. The snap switch just ignites the pilot which in turn sends a small electric current to the gas valve which allows the valve to open and burn until water is at set temperature. If the pilot goes out the lack of current shuts off gas valve. A safety feature. How do you get water if you don't have electricity? You do NOT want to run a gas or any water heater low on water because you will create hydrogen gas inside and you will potentially have a rocket shooting out through you roof or some other explosion.

We have propane at the cabin. The tank is in a closet where all the plumbing is so just keeping it lit in the cold months keeps things from freezing.

The very first on demand water heater I ever saw was in the early 70s. It had a pilot light and no electricity was required. Ran on propane.

Re: Propane water heater? - 04/11/21 09:52 PM

Can you run the line yourself and let the water provider do the tap in? If so I think you can run 1" from the meter at least 3/4 of the way then drop down to 3/4" to the cabin. If it's not too rocky rent a trencher or get a friend with a middle buster to cut you a trench. It should work fine and be way under 3 grand. Go with a conventional propane water heater and you'll be fine.

Sounds good to me . Thanks for all the answers . I just know nothing about water heaters. That part I will leave to a plumer . I just want a good 6 ft shower and a toilet so powerful that it will flush a cat. LOL!

Yes . New meter is about 800 dollar, they say. Have family that own = Ditch Witch . SO pipe ,labor, and 800 dollars to water board will be about 3000 dollar is my quess? Hope i am wrong and it cost less. BUT it seems since I have been doing everything myself its costing me more than I had figured. MAYBe thats the problem LOL!

Found PEX tube and fittings online a lot cheaper then Lowes or Home Depot. The septic tank set up will cost more then all the rest of the deal.

Re: Propane water heater? - 04/11/21 10:48 PM

you dont need to shut the gas off. pilot light uses almost none. just turn the thermostat all the way down. turn it back up about an hour before you shower. if your showering every day you will use less gas to just leave it on.

Just get a 40 gal propane water heater. No electricity needed. Standard 36kbtu is what your looking for. Y’all are making this way too complicated.

Re: Propane water heater? - 04/12/21 12:37 AM

Also the thermostat on the heater will keep the tank hot without burning gas all the time. I would leave it on if it were me.

steel traps did you have a chance to look at the onsen site. It is hot water on demand only runs when you want hot water. Runs on 2 D cell or 12 volt comes with pump and shower nosel.?Everyone has them up here in ontario in their off grind camps.

Re: Propane water heater? - 04/12/21 12:51 AM

They won't pump water for a distance but they will not run out of hot water for general use only hot water when you want it or it is shut off.

Re: Propane water heater? - 04/12/21 01:32 AM

Your local plumbing supply house can order the water heater you want. You want a propane, standing pilot heater. Tell them you need one that does not require electric.

No need to turn off the gas when not in use. A pilot uses almost no gas and every modern gas fired heater will have a gas control valve. There's a sensor that proves the pilot is lit. If the pilot goes out, the control valve shuts off gas automatically to prevent filling the house with propane. To reset it, you press and hold a button to allow gas to get to the pilot and light it with a match. Hold the button until that sensor gets hot (a few seconds) and it's up and running again. And, no electricity needed if you order it that way.

I can afford that. These batteries operate the automatic petzo ignition system.

When you pipe in your new water heater you’ll need to use metallic pipe near the connections if it’s top fed. Our code calls for all pipe within 18” or flue to be metallic. If you use copper don’t forget your dielectric unions.
