Opening day turkey with Moms gun - 04/12/21 02:19 PM
Was finally able to harvest a turkey with Moms old JC Higgens 12 ga mod 20 2 3/4 inch. Had this jake sneak in from my neighbors and shot him from about 35 yards. Heard 4 or 5 toms this morning but they were all across the creek and didn't want to play.
One of the routines that I do and have had pretty good luck with through the years is to use my slate and a mouth call to sound like a couple of hens getting into it. Aggressive yelps with fighting purrs then follow up with a couple of quick gobbles using a haint poly call I usually do 2 sets and then shut up for 1/2 hour. 9 times out of 10 I'll see a jake or tom easing in, may not get a shot but they take a peek. I compare it to rattling in young bucks.
Shot this bird with a 1 3/8oz hand load of nickle plated #6. Bang flop. For anyone interested in this load here it is. This load has shot very well out of my various guns and my friends.Mild recoil just a heavy field load
12ga Win or Rem 2 3/4 inch trap hull
32.0 grains Alliant Blue Dot
Win primer
Wad WIn AA red or Rem RP12
1 3/8 oz of nickle plated or copper plated shot no buffer
