2010 Chevy Equinox?? - 04/12/21 07:31 PM

Anyone own one around this year model? Wife has found one she wants but I'm not to crazy about chevys but I'm willing to at least research it before I tell her NO. lol So anyway it has 180,000 on it. I'm thinking it could be pretty close to the end of it's life. Anyone with real world experience with one?

Every manufacturer has good and bad cars. Highway miles are not so bad. Lots depends on how the car was driven too.

The all wheel drive system is not good in those. Front wheel drive is better. Any noise at start up will most likley mean it needs timing chain replaced. If you have a code reader make sure it doesn’t have a “camshaft out of position” code.

I'm a big fan of the atumnul equinox, followed by the spring equinox, then in a distant third maybe the chevy equinox.

They have a tendency to blow head gaskets. Have to pull engine to replace head gasket.

My daughter bought one last fall when was in hurry to buy something. Hit deer with their dodge journey totaled it..They didn't do much research and I thought rushed to buy..Anyway the engine light comes on it over heats. I put my computer on it says bad heat sensor. Changed thermostat and heat sensor and was royal pain in butt to bleed system..Didn't get far and it over heats again.
Long story short I start researching it..Pretty sure was blown head gasket and more work and cost than worth fixing...They were lucky and found a guy wanted a car could run long enough for demo derby so they got $300. instead junk price. Which it was junk..
I would certainly not buy one especially with that many miles.. Not only did my daughters fail.. while we were still figuring it out. She got to work one morning and a co worker said hers Equinox was doing same thing..
What ever you decide to buy before you do. Go on net and google most common problem for that year and model vehicle..Little research can be a money saver..

We have a 2006 and a 2018.

Too cold in Canada to heat up the car.

We had one, lots of repairs, I hear timing chain can jump, destroying the engine, then car is worthless

So far I'm finding a lot more bad than good. I think I'm going to pass on this one. Thanks for the replies.

I also was afraid the all wheel drive was going bad, 150k miles, it would clank when changing directions, forward, reverse

I was at a wholesale auction yesterday. 3 of the 5 inops, cars they sell on the screen because they cannot drive though under their own power, were Equinox's one 2010 and two 2011. Auction was after I posted above. Made me think of this thread and chuckle. LOL

I am a repair tech, and we see lots of issues witb the 2.4l engines in the Equinox. Timing chains are when not if repair no matter the mileage. At that mileage it either has already had the timing chains replaced or they need replaced. Personally the 2.4l and 3.6l GM engines are junk. I am a die hard GM guy, but when my wife needed a different vehicle a few years ago we bought a new dodge journey for what they wanted for 4 year old equinox's with 60k on the odometer. It now has 110k on it and the only repair other than oil changes and tires has been an alternator. Still has the factory brake pads on it.

Agreed, 2.4 and 3.6 GM are junk. Newer Dodge/Chrysler 3.6 isn’t any better lMO.

I’d sooner put her in an older Trailblazer or Envoy with I-6 4.2 ltr than an Equinox. I see lots of those running through auctions with over 200k. Can’t say that about the Equinox.

its end of life. I had a 2015 which I got rid of at 120k and it had issues.

Toyota Rav 4 now and its amazing!

I agree with the others. When that timing chain gives you problems it will exceed the value of the vehicle to fix it. They're nice when there's low mileage on them. After that, it's time to cut them loose.

The 2010 GMC Acadia with 3.6 is basically the same vehicle. Just got rid of one. Worst car I ever owned.
