So we're painting rocks and got these rocks at Lowes but they seem to have some oil content and won't take paint or urethane well without chipping off. Anyone know what kind of rock it is? Other than a love stone.....

My first thought was why buy plain rocks too.

My first thought also. How hard is it? Will it scratch easily with a nail? If not, basalt might be your answer. As to the oily surface, maybe they treated them with oil or wax to make them a little glossy?? Crack one open and post a picture.

Believe it or not, there are parts of the country where rocks are pretty rare!
But sorry, Gary, I can't tell much about it.

Theres not a single rock on my whole property. Nope, they're all married with big families....

A few years back they started rip-rapping the shores in front of all the expensive lake homes to prevent erosion. Excavators and landscapers started buying up all the rock piles the local farmers had been saving for generations. Once the farmers got wise to what was going on, prices of rocks went up considerably!

Went out and picked these up a few weeks ago. They don’t need any paint. [Linked Image]

Here's a broken one.
My niece and her hubby took some boulders from the farm to the city and put them in their front lawn. It raised the assessed value by 20k!

The broken one's grain looks too soft to be basalt but maybe. I snag the photos and send them to an old geologist I know, along with the detail that paint doesn't stay on it well. A person should be able to paint basalt.

Non, I agree he should be able to paint basalt, but I believe these were store-bought and treated with some wax or oil...Please do send the pics out to someone you know as now I am interested in what it is!!

I think they were treated myself. From Home Depot in a 30# bag.

It's a rock from a quarry where the loader has a hydraulic leak. Pre-treated waterproof rocks, they should be marking up the price more.
