What kind of Trout?

What kind of Trout? - 04/13/21 06:31 PM

Its been 20 years since I've Trout fished, but decided to have at it this year. The Trout in the pic is the second one like this that I've caught, that I figure is a Brook trout but is different than the others I've been catching. Weird dark color and missing spots.

Odd shape also, deep down thru. Blueish/ purple tint.

Brookies have orange and white fins.

Re: What kind of Trout? - 04/13/21 06:38 PM

I've caught quite a few brook trout, but never one that looked like that color-wise. Did you catch it in a stream or lake? It wouldn't be a splake, would it? I'm pretty sure a splake is a cross between a brook trout and a lake trout.

Ever see one of these John?

Caught in a mountain stream, but stream is stocked by the Fish Comm.

I googled Splake Trout Trapper and it looks close to the second up in this pic. Top one too.

Re: What kind of Trout? - 04/13/21 06:56 PM

Had to Google that too. lol

I think you got it White. Not much difference between them and a Splake but Tiger looks closer. Thanks guys!

The pic I found of a Splake has the gill markings closer than the pic I found of a Tiger.

Guess I could call my BIL who ran the cold water division of the Fish Comm. Until he retired. I haven't ragged on him for quite awhile. grin

I think splake reared in tanks.

Re: What kind of Trout? - 04/13/21 07:08 PM

Splake and tiger trout are both hybrids, and markings can really vary a lot with hybrids. Looks more like a splake, but I would think it's location would point towards a tiger trout.

Re: What kind of Trout? - 04/13/21 07:13 PM

Put-n-take. They put them in, you, take them out. Sterile hybrid raised in a tank for your angling enjoyment.
We have them here too. frown

Yep, they get to meet the board he's posing on.

The crick I was at has loads of Natives...bait stealing thieves! lol

I caught two natives today and two the last time I went up in there.

Not my pic but exactly like the ones native here.

But that little bait thief sure is a pretty brook trout.

They sure are pretty! They all get a pass, even the bigger ones.

Re: What kind of Trout? - 04/13/21 07:44 PM

hippie, now you got me fired up to go fish some brook trout in a small stream I took some nuisance beaver out of. They dammed the little stream and flooded out the trail he takes to get to his deer stand. He said there were brook trout in there and I was welcome anytime to fish it. My wife sold my trout creel at a garage sale. I didn't think I'd be stream trout fishing anymore. Dang!

Tiger trout.

Cross between a brookie and brown

WV is stocking them here again

Re: What kind of Trout? - 04/13/21 09:01 PM

grin I like those better than the normal way of baking cornbread , drop in the butter or oil with a spoon and semi fry them till browned . Since they are round, it's easy to turn them around to brown . Don't need to use a lot of butter, either. Just enough to get them nicely browned !

Thanks

Is there a purpose for the cross breeding or just because they could, if ya know?

Re: What kind of Trout? - 04/13/21 09:18 PM

Hush puppies is the only kind of cornbread it's okay to put sugar in.

Re: What kind of Trout? - 04/14/21 01:26 AM

I had not been involved with "tiger trout" but this is how we made the "Splake," a hybrid result when stripping eggs from female lake trout and stripping male brook trout sperm into
a basin while gently stirred with a turkeys wing feather . That's only Step # 1. Tut

There are Brownies in this crick but they look like normal Brownies...spots and paler until they get the yellow belly after they're in a year.
These stand out from them.

Re: What kind of Trout? - 04/14/21 01:07 PM

Who needs a creel just cut a willow from along the bank quick and easy to carry with a fly rod in the other hand .
A 3 weight or smaller fly rod around 9' long or shorter will have you thinking you caught Moby Rico's long lost cousin short leaders are helpful to if it's windy .

Re: What kind of Trout? - 04/14/21 01:19 PM

Hippie, not sure what creek you caught that Tiger from.
But I'd bet it was a local trout club stocking and not the state.

Re: What kind of Trout? - 04/14/21 01:46 PM

That's a tiger trout.
Mostly stocked by clubs because they "I'll eat anything" attitude of brookie and the "bulldoggedness" off a brown.

They don't get super long, but get heavy and look like pretty colored footballs.

Re: What kind of Trout? - 04/14/21 02:34 PM

The first pic looks nothing like the tigers I've caught
but
there's more than one strain of brown in Pa. and that may make a difference.
Fish Biologist chick told me the tigers are sterile so harvest or not matters none.
Her name is Brook lol.

I like the trout with pink meat.

No sir, I was 10 when the flood filled it up. My granddad thought sure it would fail and wipe us out! It held and we only had 9' in the house.

Ha, you folks don't even have your wimmin trained for fishing down there.
Ours don't need instructions on when to hold the boat or get ya closer, they know! cool

I've heard folks use them for striper bait in the lake Johns talking about.

Large mouth and small mouth both. I see some rainbows but they haven't been cooperative

Re: What kind of Trout? - 04/15/21 10:06 AM

It is not a splake, they have the white fin markings and are a cross between a laker and a brook trout. It looks almost like a tiger trout except for the color, a tiger is a cross between a brown and a brook trout.

Went up in there again this morning hoping to catch another one of those morphadites but no luck. Brownies were biting and caught a trophy native that I put back, probably 7" er.
