Walnut bunk bed

Walnut bunk bed - 04/24/21 04:10 AM

This is my first attempt at anything like this. I found and was given a black walnut tree that was blown down over a year a go. So I took the log a bought a bandsaw mill. Decided the track was too short so I built my own 24' track learned how to wire/mig weld.

Now the grandson's have a solid walnut bunk bed. I did use 1" red oak for the mattress slats

What do you think should I have done something different? [Linked Image]

I like to put some gloss polyurethane on it...really makes any burl, or lighter wood pop. Looks good!

Nice action!! Is it pretty heavy...?

Re: Walnut bunk bed - 04/24/21 02:47 PM

Yeah its very heavy these boys or their grandma will not be rearranging any. I carried it in and assembled it in place.
I was pretty happy with the way it turned out and its finished just it time for our 28 year anniversary so the boy were able to stay the night. Guess I'll build one more, this time out of cedar for my daughter

I didn't see anything about drying the lumber. The comment about it being heavy brought that to my attention.

Hopefully, you will have no problems with the wood shrinking.

I don't think it will time will tell i guess.

looks like a fine job !!! Walnut may or may not shrink, depends on how soon it was cut up and where it was stored. Most times if made into something that holds it in place it does fine.

What mill did you buy? I am in the beginning stages of building a swing blade for myself.

I just bought a harborfreight mill. Then I built my own 24' track. They were the only ones that didn't have a 6 month or longer delivery time. So far I'm impressed with that little predator engine it has started 1st pull every time. I think it will do me fine im not depending on it for my living.

I also built my deck. Red oak post pine frame and steps alternating red/white oak deck boards and walnut/cedar rail

Re: Walnut bunk bed - 04/24/21 10:05 PM

That’s super cool!
Any pics of the mill?

I have used a lot of Harbor Freights Predator motors on mud motors over the years. Always start good, even in the cold and I’ve never blown one up or wore it out. The guy who builds the mud motor kits did an informal study on the those motors and said that the motors with Mobil 1 5-30 high mileage run the longest. He breaks them in with regular oil then switches to Mobil 1 High Miles.
