I received this request for prayers today. I know it would be greatly appreciated if y'all would offer up a prayer for John.
Hi Paul this is Joy Shuke, John Shuke’s wife. I’m asking for the trapping community to pray for John. He is in hospital with double pneumonia from covid. We were traveling out to Oregon, but never made it. He is in hospital in Boise Idaho. Hoping at some point to transfer him home to NC. Thank you all for your prayers and well wishes.

I have been trying to get an update on John and got the following this morning from an acquaintance on another forum who contact info for John's son-in-law:
@QuietButDeadly i figured I’d tag you since I got your message this morning. This is the text I received from Johns son in law first thing this morning:
“John is still holding on. He’s still on the ventilator. His co2 levels are pretty elevated and the dr doesn’t like that, but John is still fighting. Autumn is still out there with him at the moment. Joy is trying to get out there to trade places with Autumn, but Joy is medically unable to fly. A train wouldn’t leave until another week or 2 and then it would take her another 4 days to get there on train. So now she is currently looking for someone that would be willing to drive her out there in a rental vehicle (said she would cover food, hotel, and pay for the persons flight back), but no luck so far. Please continue to pray for John, and pray that Joy can find a way out there.”
I told the family I’d do anything in my power to help them. I wish I could drive her out there but it’s been absolute chaos over here between our work schedules and trying to finish moving to the new house. All this bs with the gas shortage didn’t help. Anyway, enough of the woe is me BS. I got permission from his family to post on here because I figure it will reach a lot more people than me talking to the half dozen people I talk to regularly beyond the forum. If anyone can help or has any suggestions, let me know. I’ll gladly contribute some funds to help facilitate getting this in motion. Thanks guys
As you can see, John is still hospitalized in Boise Idaho and is still on a ventilator. His daughter is out there with him now and his wife is trying to get back out there but is unable to fly. John and the family need to be lifted up and if anyone can help with the transportation issue, I can get messages to the family. I will try to provide updates as they become available.

His wife has found a ride to get back to Boise. Prayers ongoing.

Today's update from his son-in-law is not very encouraging...........
"Things with John are not looking good at all. His oxygen levels are critically low today even with him on the ventilator. But I’m still praying and having hope. Just wanted to update you since I forgot to yesterday.”

John was the owner of Seven Oaks Trapping Supplies in North Carolina. He developed his own line of baits and lures and also made drowning rods, drags and other items that required welding. He was a fixture at the NC Convention and also the Bland, VA Rhondy.
He also attended many of the Basic Trapper Ed classes in our area and handed out lots of samples to new trappers. He was a strong supporter of the NC Trappers Association and others I am sure.
John will be missed!

I just got the news and it's always hard to hear and even more so when it's someone like John. He was a man who was like know other someone who loved what he did and the people he shared it with. The trapping community he will be greatly missed at the shows by many people. To be absent frome the body is to be present with the Lord so I can say I know where John is and that one day I will get to set back down and talk with him and I know he will have a bunch more great stories to tell God's speed my friend.

I always enjoyed talking with John at the Bland Rhondy, he and my wife always had great conversations about the stinky stuff I would buy. My prayers and thoughts go out to his family. A loss to the trapping community. Eric

I'm sorry to hear about John's passing. It wasn't all that long ago (March of this year) that I ordered more of his drowning locks from him. When I received my last order, John was kind enough to send me some of his beaver tail oil, business cards and a knife too. I always liked doing business with John, he was a great guy and I liked the time I got to visit with him on the phone.
RIP in John, you will be missed!!!

Goodness, we are losing more and more trapping buddies lately.
Though this life is through brother John, the saints welcome you to Heaven while we thank God for the Promise of the Ages >>>> the resurrection of the saints upon the New Earth to come.
The Bible doesn't mention any trapping as the embodied saints upon the New Earth in the blessed dawn to come but we sure hope something like that is available.
Can we even imagine that demo!
Jesus ate after his bodily resurrection so food must be in the picture
We pray Blake and John and other trappers we have known are at that rendezvous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Celebration of life service for John is June 5 visitation is at 2 PM service is at 3 PM There is a dinner after the service for everyone who would like to stay. Calvary missionary Methodist church,

This Saturday afternoon, many of us will gather to celebrate the life of John Shuke aka traprjohn. John may have not been as well know nationwide as some members of this site but he had developed a pretty good regional following with his bait and lure business along with the tools of the trade that he fabricated plus items like his hitch covers. His wife was an integral part of the business as well and they also had products that appealed to the ladies with their goat milk soaps, lip balm and variety of jewelry items including tiny traps.
John and his wife were a fixture at the NC and Bland, VA conventions. John was a big supporter of the NC Trappers Association and always encouraged others to get involved at the local and national level with any effort to protect and promote trapping. John was always willing to answer questions and give encouragement and advice based on his experience. He also encouraged newer trappers to study trapping through trapper education classes as well as books and videos to shorten their learning curve. John has given away many samples of his products at local trapper education classes and many youngsters have gone home from a convention with a free bottle of lure to try out.
I am not sure what will happen with his business going forward but his presence will certainly be missed by those of us who knew and had dealings with him.

I was just thinking about John yesterday for some reason. I wanted to make a point to get to the NC convention this September and see him again, then I open Tman for the first time in months and see this.
I was one of the youngsters John was always helping out when I used to attend the conventions as a teen. He'd always have answers to my questions, and his patience seemed absolutely unlimited. I always looked up to him, but it's surprising how hard it hit me to hear this considering I only spent maybe four weekends getting to know him over the years.
He knew I wasn't from a religious household and wasn't a strong believer, but he talked to me about religion a fair amount. He was never preachy or pushy, and I always enjoyed the discussions. If I remember correctly, I think he said he was saved while working as a welder in Idaho. It's fitting that he took the last step of that journey in the same place he took his first. If only he didn't have to take them so soon.
Prayers for Joy and the rest of his family. I can only imagine how hard this must be for them.
