We had Tobins "First Prize" packing here. Closed in 1981 and sold to John Morrell. Morrell was sold to Smithfield Farms/Foods in 1995.

Should be some nice new viruses produced in that place.
Workers have apartments in the same building(BARF).
When a worker dies they likely run him thru the grinder with the pigs.

Here's some highlights to pique your appetite for Chinese pork:

"All waste water is fully treated and the by-product is drinkable." (Probably what the hogs and workers drink)

"The complex will provide 5,000 jobs. Workers live in dormitories on site. They stay there for months at a time before going home for visits." (Typical Chinese thinly-veiled slave labor)

"The complex integrates feed processing, pig production, slaughtering, meat and food processing, and sightseeing and tourism." (Integrated feed production = All waste goes back in the feed)

"The complex will have full coverage of a 5G network. There will be deep integration of intelligent equipment, Internet of things, big data, cloud computing, and AI technology, says Ellermann. Sick pigs will be identified using facial recognition, and then a robot will go to treat the pigs." (Sounds a lot like a Chinese people farm)

The USA is trying to eliminate the use of animals for food and China is rapidly advancing their modernization of animal production..... I wonder who will be better off in 20 years.....

That was my thought too, unfortunately too many people here think every thing just comes from the store.

Sounds like another place for the development deadly viruses and genetic mutations to me. You know like feeding dead cows to cows cause mad cow. Beyond that can you imagine all the since experiments they will do. Pigzilla anyone?

That will be good news for corn and soybean exporters from the USA, Brazil and Argentina as 2 million hogs eat a lot of corn and soybean oil meal. Not so good news for the US processors that sell a lot of pork to China. Chinese labor is still much lower cost then undocumented US labor. Hogs for slaughter have short lifetimes so these systems will probably work very well for the system and methods they choose to use. Industrialized agriculture is not what most would like but it can be a very efficient way to help feed a billion plus citizens. Pork is a mainstay in China for many reasons as their diets can be diverse, they can confine easily, can be crowded and still grow and be healthy and are more efficient in using feed and other inputs then beef. Poultry is the most efficient users of inputs for the usable output, but hogs do well also. The housing conditions take away a lot of personal freedom but may well be on par or better than what many undocumented workers live in here.

I am picking up another American raised and processed hog May 4th. I just ate some Kroger's pork chops a few days ago, because we were out of local pork and it didn't taste right. Whatever the fluid they ad is makes the meat a little off.

Both Walmart and Kroger frequently put something in shrimp, that makes them taste really off. Once, I bought some Walmart crayfish tails that were nearly inedible, from the strong chemical taste

I think all Americans should try some meat from a local butcher to see if it's better. It's definitely much cheaper to buy a whole, half or quarter beef or hog.

China may very well send their Uyghurs, who they have been putting into reeducation camps, and other dissidents, to be an intergral part of the processing and finished product. China has long sought to improve long term pork production. China has long wanted to control the pork industry. China may take those who don't get along with their Communist ideals and put them to good use at the pork plants. sick

We love pig, but here, one needs to raise his own to make it worthwhile (to me anyway). A guy can pick up some ribs, or whatnot up pretty cheap in the store, but once you've had the best you can get...average just won't do!

The Japs did this back in the seventies,..we stood oblivious,..teach them all processing attributes,..we wonder why markets shrink. American innovation is short lived,..a playing card shuffled within the shadows!
