Looking to have new windows installed - 05/01/21 01:54 PM

Looking into having all new windows installed on my home. I have 20 that will need replaced. Any hints or advice? Brand name, installer scams, type of material, prices?

You get what you pay for, and they're not cheap. If your climate in PA isn't as brutal as ours is, you can get by with cheaper windows. I'm not a vinyl guy, but sometimes that's the only option for people because of cost. Proper install is just as important as the window itself. It's a big investment, and if it's not done right then you just wasted a bunch of money and could have more problems . Fiberglass is also something to consider, it would be a middle-of-the-road option between vinyl and wood/clad windows. Hope this helps, best of luck!

P.S. Brand names and good installers will come with good warranties and customer service, should there be any issues that need addressed later.

Pella or Anderson.
See if Cassidy and Peirce are in range for you, they are good suppliers and have good installers.
Beware of vinyl and said discounts, their mark up is comparable to soft ice cream.
Lezzer lumber is another good supplier.

Windows are all about the installation.
Proper leveling, form flash over cauk on the outside.
Spray foam seal on interior bla bla bla
Low e
And tell them you will be doing a vacume test, or make them responsible to have one done
Pella makes a off brand that is good.
Genweld has low to high end options
I like vinal in wa and alluminum in AZ

I had anderson windows and had a problem with one, the service representative checked the rest of my windows and they replaced all the sashes in my house and told me my 20 year warranty was now good from the new install date , I think there a good company, at least they used to be.

Finster if I would you I would call Renewal and just tell them to install. You ARE NOT going to find better quality or service. I tore 18 1980's era Andersen double pane argon filled windows out of a farmhouse to be reused. I had moisture in between panes on two of those windows. With the lifetime Guarantee they were repaired without question. Stay away from Weather Shield. 5 years down the road when they start having issues they will give you all the excuses in the world why it isn't their fault. Had them in a house I bought and they were JUNK. Almost all the glass comes from the same two plants for all the window maker. It's how they are engineered and put together that makes all the difference.

We did Andersons ourselves 15 years ago, I use to install them for two contractors. We had odd size windows so they were a little higher. 375.00 each but we only have seven window in our home. They look and function just as they did the day they went in. Just ordered an Anderson French door for the back deck, you do not what to know what that puppy cost.........

LOL I bit the bullet 4 years ago . Had widow world, champion and AMERICAS windows quote my house. Wife wanted to go with Americas window. Ok tech came and measured, we paid deposit , all's well. 6,000 bucks well! OK crew showed up with windows . 4 guys rolled out with saws alls and each started cutting out old ones. 2 guys sit the new one in and I notice a BIG problem. 2 inch gap over window. I said hey those are custom made why are they to little. Guy said no problem . Pulled a bundle of 1 by's out of truck put one on top one on bottom. I WAS PEOD !!! Told him if half of my house wasn't cut out they'ed be reordering them. I had put tons of windows in and didn't need one bys. Now don't get me wrong these guys were amazing with bending aluminum and caulking guns. They look awesome but didn't feel right how they did them. We had peachtree windows but they were out of business.
As for saving money , Cant tell much difference but the gas had leaked out of 2 of the originals and were fogged up . Hence getting them replaced.

10 years ago, we had Window World replace our windows. If I remember correctly, there was 3 different grades of windows. We went with their best grade, excellent windows. Their installers were amazing, plus the kept their work area clean. Would recommend them to anyone.

Please don't take this personal but Pella sucks. The warranty on paper looks good but when and if it come times to use it it is worthless. They nit pick on every little word in the warranty and will say what is written is not the intent. They jerked me around for 5 months trying to get replacements and once I finally did get what I needed I had to take the hardware from the bad product and put it on the new. Pella may make a good product but their warranty policies suck. I will never do business with them again and know a few others that will not either.

Re: Looking to have new windows installed - 05/04/21 05:37 AM

My .02 on windows.
We built a new home back about 4 years ago.
Spent lots of time looking at windows.
Came to the following conclusions.

1) All the "top of the line" American made windows (especially Pella) are really middle of the road at best.
2) The best quality windows are made in Europe, look into Tilt and turn windows.
3) Triple pane windows are the way to go.
4) like everything in life quality costs more.

we ended up with windows from Canada, Fibertec, Fiberglas, triple pane casement windows. Not the best but every good if not better than an American made window except maybe for some small mfgs. Had a blower test done on house when finished. Before some small minor leaks we had 1.0 ACH.
