Grandpa and me had a groundhog in a tree, it wasn’t put there. Did it get up there itself? I’ve never heard of on climbing.

Yes, I killed one in a trees. Well I hit it with a stick and the border collie killed it when it hit the ground. My boys came in last week talking about one that was in a tree by the barn they are working on trapping.

Yes, they will climb trees.

Groundhogs climb trees very well. They often climb mulberry trees and gorge on the fruit.

The first time I ever saw a groundhog in a tree, was when I sicced my dog named Maybe on a groundhog. When I caught up with her she kept looking up a very tall ash tree. I looked around at the base of the tree for a hole and could not find one. I looked up in the tree where Maybe was looking and there was a large groundhog about 40 feet off the ground. I threw a rock at it and it quickly went up another 20 feet higher.

Yes, groundhogs definitely are capable of climbing trees. Like others, I have seen them up trees many times.

They are also active outside the den at night. Have them on trail cameras quite a few times at night.

Over the years I've seen maybe a half-dozen woodchucks in trees, fruit trees mostly. I probably didn't see at least that many.

Oh yes all the time. Out of fear for their lives and for a food source they like.

Re: Do groundhogs climb trees? - 05/18/21 04:09 PM

As a little kid on the farm, our collie was great at hunting them. Once she treed a woodchuck but I was way too young to use a firearm so had to be a bit more resourceful in helping her out. The only thing I had was a toy bow and arrows, you know the type with the rubber suction cups. Well I knew the suction cup wouldn't do anything so I pulled it off and sharpened the end of it in a pencil sharpener. After a few tries was lucky enough to knock it out of the tree and the dog took care of the rest. My mother wasn't impressed with me about wrecking my arrows but my father thought it was brilliant. Later for Christmas I got a Red Rider and think how I handled myself with that woodchuck helped seal the deal. Sure do miss that dog.

They climb surprisingly well.
Have watched groundhogs (Marmota monax) young and old climb trees dozens of times.
Including one fatty that climbed a broomstick thick sapling that bent over until the 'chuck was less than four feet off the ground, despite having climbed a good ten feet.

Re: Do groundhogs climb trees? - 05/18/21 04:59 PM

Never seen one in a large tree, but have seen them on several occasions in saplings eating fresh leaves etc.Usually no more than 5 or 6 feet up.
I have no doubt that they could climb a larger tree if they were so inclined.

They climb pretty good.
The ones I have seen coming back down are pretty funny.
They come down head first and their body kind of overtakes them.
