Pa Boys, Get Out and Vote.

Pa Boys, Get Out and Vote. - 05/18/21 10:40 PM

Wife and I just got back from our polling place. I skipped most of the candiates, most for minor positions were write-ins anyways.

PA is voting on four important ballot measures.

The first two are proposed amendments to the State Constitution to limit the Governor's power after he used it like a dictator during the Covid scam.

The third prohibits denial or abridgement of rights on account of an individual's race or ethnicity. (already illegal).

The fourth expands the state's loan program to volunteer fire companies to municipal fire companies and EMS service nonprofits
Potential measures.

The first two are extremely important. Get out and vote appropriately.

YES on the Amendments, NO on expanding borrowing. (If the cities need to upgrade their Fire Equipment, they need to cut their bloated budgets elsewhere!)

A worker at my voting place told us it was a large turnout for a primary. My wife told her she wasn't surprised after the way the last election went. The poll worker agreed.

I voted was on the news that Republican ballots wouldn't register in the machines in my county.

Re: Pa Boys, Get Out and Vote. - 05/19/21 01:34 AM

Ours took a long time. They said they only had 5 machines this time and 10 the last election. Plus people didnt know what the questions were so it took more time to figure them out. They gave us a little piece of paper with an R on it. I looked at the table and there were a big pile still of the D's and not a lot of r's left.

I will.

I checked a few reports from across the state this morning and am reading that about 55% percent of voters want to remove some of the governor's power. But those are not final tallies.

I heard that too. They were talking that it wouldn't register on the electrical part, but they were putting marks on the ballot in the machine so they could be counted afterwards.

The little lady at my polling place said they were pulling each ballot out after you voted to make sure it had mark. She said they had no problems in Elk county as of 10 a.m.

From the Morning Call

About 8:15 a.m. Wednesday, unofficial, incomplete returns on the state website had voting on the first question — the one concerning ending or extending a declaration — at 1,031,128 voting “yes” and 892,093 voting “no,” or a margin of 53.61% to 46.39%.

The voting on the other question was 1,039,897 yes votes to 900,920 no votes, a margin of 53.58% to 46.42%.

Re: Pa Boys, Get Out and Vote. - 05/19/21 07:37 PM

I think people voted for the last one thinking they were helping volunteer fire departments. In reality, it's hurting VFD's because now municipal fire departments can draw money from the same pot. The way it was worded was very deceiving.

About 89% of votes tallied and it looks like all four ballot questions passed. Three constitutional amendments and one regulation change. The first two amendments limit the governor's power to declare and continue states of emergency and give more power to the legislature in those matters.

Pa is the first state to limit a governor's power.

Pennsylvania Voters Impose Limits on Governor's Powers

POTTSTOWN, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania voters became the first in the nation to curb their governor’s emergency powers, approving constitutional amendments proposed by Republican lawmakers angry over Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf’s handling of the COVID-19 outbreak.

The vote on Tuesday's statewide primary ballot came as Republican lawmakers across the country have sought to roll back the emergency powers governors wielded during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The constitutional amendments will give lawmakers much more power over disaster declarations, to apply whether the emergency is another pandemic or natural disaster.

Republicans see the referendum as a victory with strong political overtones, as the state gears up for a wide-open governor's race in 2022 and Wolf leaving office after two terms.

Republicans in the state Legislature and those aiming to replace him in 2023 have made Wolf a top political target, repeatedly attacking his stewardship during the pandemic, including his orders shuttering businesses, sending students home for online schooling and ordering masks worn outside the home.

“Last night, Pennsylvanians voted to reject Democrat Gov. Tom Wolf’s overreach of executive powers after his failed COVID response — a clear sign of accountability coming in 2022,” Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel tweeted Wednesday.

The state's Republican Party chairman, Lawrence Tabas, said in a statement that Pennsylvanians voted to "put a stop to Gov. Tom Wolf’s dictatorship.”

Wolf has largely lifted his orders to stem the spread of the coronavirus, with the remaining limitations on crowd capacity lifting after May 30 and a mask-wearing mandate for the unvaccinated that tracks federal guidance, until 70% of adults are vaccinated.

Wolf's office maintained that the disaster declaration does not affect orders designed to prevent COVID-19 from spreading.

Rather, it relaxes regulations for medical professionals, gives the state access to federal emergency aid and streamlines National Guard deployments, among other things, his office said.

In statements Wednesday, the Legislature's top Republicans characterized the vote as a victory for individual rights and freedoms, a move to re-establish checks and balances to ensure a functioning, collaborative government.

Wolf said he spoke with legislative leaders of both parties to chart a path forward.

“So we’re starting that conversation,” he said Wednesday at a news conference in Pottstown. “You can’t just flick a switch and make the change. But the voters have spoken, and we’re going to do what I think the voters expect us to do and make the best of it.”

Wolf had strongly opposed the amendments, saying in January that Republicans were injecting partisan politics into emergency disaster response in a “thinly veiled power grab.” Just last week, he warned that the provisions were a threat to a functioning society that must respond to increasingly complicated disasters.

He struck a more conciliatory tone on Wednesday.

“There’s no question that I opposed this. I said that many times in many different ways,” Wolf said. “But the voters have spoken, and Pennsylvania wants to change the rules. And I think it’s incumbent upon us to the best we possibly can to make those rules work.”

Republicans accused Wolf of fear-mongering and had history on their side: The last time voters rejected a ballot question was in 1993, according to information provided by the state.

With votes still being counted Wednesday, support for the two questions led with 53% of the vote, with 89% of precincts reporting. More than 2.1 million ballots were cast, still less than a quarter of the state's 8.7 million registered voters.

The questions asked voters to end a governor’s emergency disaster declaration after 21 days and to give lawmakers the sole authority to extend it or end it at any time with a simple majority vote.

Before Tuesday, the constitution required a two-thirds majority vote by lawmakers to end a governor’s disaster declaration and, legally, the governor could issue an emergency declaration for up to 90 days and extend it without limit.

Governors have no say in what proposals lawmakers put on ballots to amend the state constitution.

In the meantime, the governor's emergency disaster declaration for the pandemic was set to expire midnight Thursday.

Wolf said he spoke with lawmakers about renewing the declaration, stressing the need to maintain the flexibility and access to federal aid.

It is possible that lawmakers will pick and choose which elements of the disaster response they want to extend or end.

The constitutional amendments take effect after the state certifies the election result, possibly in early June.

Like hippie said, why does oit always go against Republicans. You never here about democrat votes being lost, not counted or in this case, plain old rejected by voting machines.

Possible Eliction Violation-Fayette County Pa.

The Pennsylvania District Attorney on Wednesday launched an investigation into rejected ballots during Tuesday’s primary.

Elections officials in a Pennsylvania County on Tuesday were working to resolve a problem dealing with voting machines rejecting ballots in all 77 precincts.

Voting machines in Fayette County were only rejecting Republican ballots, according to Chris Varney, Judge of Elections.

At first, Varney was under the impression that there was a problem will the barcodes on all ballots, but it turns out only Republican ballots are being rejected.

CBS Pittsburgh reported late Tuesday: The Fayette County solicitor said the courts have granted an emergency petition, which means all the ballots that weren’t scanned will be hand-counted by the judge of elections at each individual precinct once the polls close at 8 p.m.

The Fayette County DA is launching an investigation into the ballot issues from Tuesday’s primary and he’s also looking into a possible election violation.
