Ultimate wedding horror story - 06/14/21 08:12 PM

A friend of mine runs a wedding venue. They hosted a wedding there yesterday between a Christian Slavic girl (I think Russian), and a middle eastern Muslim guy.
200 guests had RSVP'd for the wedding; only 25 people showed up.
That wedding ended up costing about $750 per person for those who showed up.

Weddings are the biggest rip off ever invented.

I doubt it hurt them much other than feelings. There's a lot of that don't sneeze at having weddings at the greenbrier. Some of the cars I've seen there for those weddings cost more than the venue.

Yep, for most it is.
I don't know what the wife spent on her dress, but between the walmart rings and food I only had about $300 in our wedding. Helped out a bunch that I cleaned out the machine shed for a venue, cooked some roadkill on the smoker, and the neighbors supplied the drinks. grin Even with our cheap wedding we have been happily married now for 17 years with no end in sight. Heck of a lot of them folks that spend 10s of thousands on a wedding don't make it more than a few years. SMH

In 1976 we got the wedding special at Chapel of the Pines in Circus Circus Casino in Las Vegas. Cost was $ 39.95 including one wedding picture and a bag of complimentary toiletries. We have been married for 45 years. I think we got our money's worth. You just need to comparison shop. LOL

A wedding as a rule is less expensive than a divorce.

Don't forget the Carat rule. The number of weeks that a Woman is Happy, is directly proportional to the number of Carats in the Diamond ring that she gets. The Carat rule stipulates 1 Carat per Week of Happy Wife ! That is 4 Carats for each Month of Wedded Bliss !!!

And remember!!! That 4 Carat Diamond ring ONLY lasts for that ONE MONTH. You have to buy another 4 Carat Diamond Ring for each of the next 11 Months !!!

Last I heard the average wedding costs about $20 K and that was several years ago. I've always wondered for some if it would be cheaper to do like hunting and fishing license and make it renewable every year. For some you could do like your drivers license and make it every 4 years....but then the divorce lawyers wouldn't go for that.

Yep, but the cost is equal to one heck of a down payment on a house. Wedding, one day. A house could be for the rest of your life.

There's a reason she is smiling while she's walking down the isle. I can't say. I would get booted.

Re: Ultimate wedding horror story - 06/14/21 09:24 PM

Here at 1 venue, it's 5k to rent the gazebo for a wedding. I've been to 3 or 4 weddings at that particular gazebo. That's just the gazebo with no place there for the reception.

My wedding costed around $1500 - $2000 and the majority of the expense was the ring I bought her.

Wish I had gone into the wedding, funeral, or baby business. When people spend money emotionally there seems to be no limit.

The wedding dress is white because the groom wants the dishwasher to match the rest of the appliances. whistle

You don't want to know what an avg wedding around here is...but start at high 5 figures and go up....

most foolish waste of money ever!

Re: Ultimate wedding horror story - 06/14/21 09:28 PM

My to be inlaws offered to pay for the wedding, the caveat was they wanted to have a say, what food, DJ, Venue etc. They put deposits down on everything they picked and after the wedding they left me with the bill...

Thankfully they are my Ex inlaws now and I can attest to one thing, the divorce was a heckuva lot more than a wedding.

Re: Ultimate wedding horror story - 06/14/21 10:23 PM

My original reason for this post was the problem with a Christian woman marrying a Muslim guy; especially since the cultures that both of them come from are so bold and stubborn, and the fact that only about 10% of the planned attendees showed up. To me that indicates huge problems to come; maybe both bride and groom will be able to shrug it off, but I doubt it.

I guess the wedding cost didn't really surprise me at all; nearly every wedding I've been to in recent years has probably cost between $20 and $30K.
I thought that was normal. I feel really sorry for these young guys now-a-days; young brides in general seem to think they are entitled to a whole lot of nonsense. Envy and jealously is an ugly (and expensive) sickness.

Yes, they had about 200 who had RSVP'd. There must have been a major melt-down of some sort between the time people had RSVP'd and the wedding date....like the brides friend's learned that the guy was a Muslim, and the grooms friend's realized she is a Slavic Christian. The two cultures mix about as well as water and oil.

That was my thoughts.
If the fella is a die hard muslim, that may have been the best option for the pour gal. I just hope for her sake that his love of her is stronger than that of his religion, sharia law would be a rough way to live as a woman. crazy

Those were sort of my thoughts.
The only other positive aspect is that neither cultures drink alcohol; alcohol added to the event would make for a real fiasco.

Here's a terrible story. Bride got caught with her "head down" with one of the guess after the wedding at the reception.

Imagine paying for a wedding and divorce all in one night.

My Wife’s engagement ring and wedding band was $9000, my wedding ring was $1800, and our wedding cost $15,000. I wouldn’t have it any other way! Just had our 8th baby the other day!!

Re: Ultimate wedding horror story - 06/15/21 03:18 AM

Hmmm without sounding like a redneck, I’ve been to two really nice weddings over the last couple of years that probably went between $2-3K max. But these were down to earth country young ladies with lots of friends. The venue at both was donated as long as it was cleaned up afterwards and they shut it down before midnight. And yeah this was a nice place with a beautiful set up for a wedding. When cowboy boots for both parties are worn, it’s gonna be a good one.

Me and the ole lady jumped the broom at the Justice of the Peace at her home out in the country. Cost $35 I think.
We've been married for 35 years.

Re: Ultimate wedding horror story - 06/15/21 05:44 AM

My wife and I had our ceremony at the oldest Catholic church in San Francisco, then had everybody drive an hour plus to a special piece of land next to a river that a friend owned. 150 people, most who brought food, lots of dogs and no dress code. We supplied BBQ chicken and lots of beer and wine in horse troughs. Four hunting buddies from college surprised me and took me up the hill with a 12 pack for my "bachelor party".

We did the whole thing for about $1,000 and that was about all the money we had at the time. I still have people tell me that was the best wedding they'd ever been to.

In two weeks it'll make 35 years.

Re: Ultimate wedding horror story - 06/15/21 03:19 PM

I have given the advice of keep your wedding inexpensive as you don't want to start the first day of your life together in debt. My alternative to this is throw a big expensive party if you need one when you celebrate 40-50-60+ years because that is the real thing to celebrate.

We did ours ourselves at the family farm. Hay bails for seats, venison for food, and all of the work by us. Only things we spent money on were a dress, rings, tent, and bounce house for the kids. Luckily we rent out a building to folks that operate a party rental company so they gave us a good deal on the tent and bounce house rental. Probably had less than $4,000 in everything and had more fun than any wedding I'd ever been to.

Re: Ultimate wedding horror story - 06/15/21 03:32 PM

The last wedding I was involved in. My sister and I offered our niece 10K if she would forgo the wedding and use the court house.

Took us up on it. Used it for some additional training and upped her salary by 15K per year.

She did have a "traditional Irish reception". Lasted about 16 hrs (not counting hang overs)

Mother was ticked off initially but thanked us later

My wife and I got hitched at the court house for about $35.00.
Her dress was $60.00
My "outfit" (dress pants and white dress shirt) was free, I already had the pants and shoes and I borrowed a shirt from her dad.
My ring was $100.00, her band and ring was $300.00 (from Wally World). I later got her a new ring, which was $1,300.00.
Our "reception" was held at "Old Country Buffet". We were so broke that we couldn't afford to pay for our own meals. Luckily, family members paid for us, without us having to ask.
Mind you, we were 20 years old with a baby due in 3 months.
We have been married (happily) now for 15 years.
