I hate money

I hate money - 06/15/21 11:33 PM

Folks lining up wanting money from me.
Sweating my arse off to make money.
Most importantly dunning folks to pay me the money they owe me.

I swear if someone had told me half of being self employed was being a collections agent I would've done something else.

Most people know this and what has kept me a company man. Ive done side gigs and make great money but every now and then I get screwed. Rather have money chase me than chase money.

Get your money up front.
Its hard not to make money I find.I always seem to accumulate way more than I need,so buy lots of stuff then I give away the surplus cash every few years then collect some more and repeat..

Chasing money sucks . I've been pretty fortunate overall though.

I ran a welding trk abt 12 years
I quit working for individuals, always a 20 min job that took 4 hrs, nothing but rust to work with and when I give them the bill, they acted gut shot.
I did 4 hours on a neighbor’s flat bed trk, told him just pay me what he thought was fair
He gave me 20 bucks, I have a mobile welding trk, loaded up, I used more fuel than that.
I only work for big companies now, no problem with getting paid.
Lesson learned.

I have 15,000 owed to me right now for work completed, will be door knocking this weekend to collect.

Amazing how a contractor can have an "emergency" (aka lack of planning) and need me the next day but then put off paying the bill for over a month.

Next time you feel the need to give away surplus cash,
remember your old buddy walleyed.

Convert it from monopoly money to U.S. greenbacks though !!! laugh

Re: I hate money - 06/16/21 12:53 AM

I was a self-employed mason for a number of years and really enjoyed it for the most part. I did mostly residential work building fireplaces, chimneys and the like and one of the most enjoyable aspects of the job was building relationships with the homeowners. Some of these jobs were substantial and made a big impact on the home. I was constantly asking for input at various stages of the project, offering suggestions and asking for their ideas. I was never quite sure how a job would look until it was completed.

Most of my work came through referrals and the vast majority of the people I did work for I had never met before. I'm sure twenty years later these folks would know me immediately if I gave them a call and would welcome me back in their homes. I miss that gratification. Getting paid was rarely a problem.

Guess it depends upon your customer base.
I worked for companies when self-employed.
Got stiffed once in over a decade working for myself.

Find yourself better customers.

Raise prices 5%
Offer 5 % discount, net 15 days
1.5% interest monthly after 45 days.

Explain the 5% discount, net 15 days saves them money

Re: I hate money - 06/16/21 01:31 AM

Had a friend get started in a landscaping business. He took on some tree work he couldnt do and I helped him with the tricky stuff a few times and never charged him- I was feeling charitable and wanted to see him succeed. Well, he had this bigger job that would take most of the day so I charged him.......about a third of what I would have charged anybody else.
He called me all week reminding me about this job on wednesday and I kept reassuring him I would be there. I do the job and all of a sudden he gets amnesia.....no calls, he doesnt stop by.... no nothing. I had to finally go to his house a month later and make an a&& out of myself trying to get my money....he didnt have it that day but he finally did pay up. In a way I guess it was worth it I dont have to worry about him bothering me for help anymore.
