Doing some light reading this evening - some of these have probably made it on here before but they’re always fun to look at.

They are from A.J. Hardy’s “Steel Traps” from 1907 I believe.

I am guessing that is a locking pin (U-shaped?) of sorts he has in his free hand?

Most of them would wipe the floor with most of us. Twice.

He's probably putting a nail into the bottom of the jaw post

Re: Old Trapping Photos - 07/28/21 03:17 PM

Had to think about the nail for a minute Buck, but makes complete sense with the older post jaw supports.

What Buck said, nail

Re: Old Trapping Photos - 07/28/21 06:02 PM

Back in the day wolf and bear trappers using footholds carried a trapwrench in their pocket to remove the jaw post nut in case they needed to release themselves.

Re: Old Trapping Photos - 12/02/23 10:41 AM

I believe the photo of the man under the man with the double barrel shotgun, with a dog in the picture is E. N. Woodcock author of "Fifty Years a Hunter and Trapper". I could be wrong, But I've read that book, (and looked at the pictures in it), at least once a year for the last Fifty-five years, and I'm pretty sure that's him.
