Coyote Trapping After Gun Deer Season

I'm sure this is a pretty basic question but still feel I should ask. As I transition from a coon to canine trapper Im trying to line up my schedule.

Our gun season runs through the last weekend of November. During those 9 days the woods are full of gut piles that are cleaned up by the yotes and wolves. How many weeks until they are hungry enough to start getting curious and working my sets.

It usually takes about 2 weeks here before I start picking up coyotes after our gun season.

There’s definitely a lul following deer season. They’re still opportunistic. Usually a week here and it’s back to normal. If you know a few deer hunters and can in your state use what’s left over to your advantage. They’re just like raccoons in the sense they never forget a free meal.

What is tough is getting a set in the right place. Harder to find when they bunch up around scrap, gut and carcasses. They dont have to be hungry to catch them. Like was already said a week or so those easy meals are gone. dead cow will change things too. they last longer. often you dont know about it. Do like the coyotes and keep an eye on birds like ravens and crows.

What Wade and Danny said. I like to find those spots, with the increased traffic, most times you can add in blind sets and snares to really increase your odds! Puts the terms more on your side!

You can pattern deer hunters just like coyotes, they are habitual. Rib cages and bone piles show up in the same locations year after year.

The colder the weather, the longer the supply of hunter leftovers last.
I always hope for a warm up at the end of our rifle season.

I've never noticed a lul other than the coyotes seem to travel/move around less, I always feel it's due to the increase of human invasion. They seem just as hungry/ cuirios to me. Deer are similar the more human invasion there travel/movement declines.

And If we ever get the CR legal on private land at the start of the coyote season we will be good to go.

You would think a number of yotes get shot off, spooked, ran hard plus the woods are full of gut piles you would think they would become a mess then.

I trapped that country where you are and I would be catching those coyotes before the gun season. Anyway that's what I did.
We caught some skunks they might be worth more then the coyotes.

My thoughts also. Most all lures and baits have additional curiosity ingredients in them and those are what really takes the attraction to the next level. All the testing ive done shows that a good food base is good but it's the extra curiosity ingredient that take it to the next level. If you really think a lack of hunger is decreasing your catch go to real coyote pee. The more I watch coyotes on camera the more I'm thinking real pee is a much better attraction than most of us believe. Never seen a coyote walk past where another coyote peed on camera. I think same will even come check out his own pee next time through.

Take the fight to the yotes ... all kinds of bait stations in the woods during and after deer season. Pass-thru and blind sets and after November, CRs. Nothing moves as freely with an invasion into their territories, but they all eat!

I plan on coyote trapping taking time especially the fur handling part. I work full time so I plan to take a week off to really devote my time and lesson the learning curve. As such.... The reason for the question is to take advantage of the best week. Looking at the calendar it seems that the week before Christmas is only going to be a 3 day week which is about 3 weeks after the end of the season.

The best large bait for snaring is a pail of deer guts. Like you said they are everywhere during deer season. Coyotes and fox expect human smell around them as most piles also have used paper towels and some have latex gloves but the canines still munch on them. Best during or after deer season bait for foottrap sets is 50% contents of a deer's stomach and 50% deer blood. Let it sour for a few days and use as bait, no lure needed! NOTE: Stomach contents with corn or acorns tend to attract rodents.

I have often snared coyotes and fox within 10 feet of a deer guts bait, in a set like this with old Christmas trees for blocking. Have used deer guts where I had too many crossing logs over a stream to snare them all. So I just put guts on both sides of the stream and snared the log between the gut piles. Smokes the foxes, not so much the coyotes.

To try and help myself that time of the year I gather all the gut piles I can in this neighborhood. I think it is more of the day after day hunters in the field that drive the coyotes off their game. The 2 week lull seems to be the thing here no matter what property I am trapping. All the gut piles get added to the equation when we get snow and colder weather.

Pee post get em regardless of how many gut piles are laying around. The gut piles laying around actually tend to make a pee post set shine even better. He or she can’t help themselves to remark a pee post that another k9 has marked specially if food is involved.

I dont start until day after gun season.
Pee post sets work awesome...seems like they are always interested in what other coyotes are visiting their gut piles and unclaimed kills.
I run about half baited dirtholes and half pee posts. Both work well here.

Pike River take the time off before gun season. Only a few bow hunters around and you may have better weather then If you wait till Dec.
The week before you take off spend your time making sets with out the trap. It's also a good time to be placing some road kills.

I know the area your going to trap and I would be making some big hole sets In those high banks along the roads. Find all bear bait sites you can coyotes love those bait sites. The bakery goods draw In rodents and the coyotes cats and fisher will be working those bait areas. Lots of trappers over look these bait sites.

Depending on the years weather patterns deer season turns the K9 life upside down.
Several things can vary dispersal of the years pups, weather being one of them as a early winter storm.
Come deer season, dispersal is automatic regardless of other circumstances.
As many have stated it is a week to ten days around here and out west before things settle down after big game season.
At the same time 2/3 of the coyote population is timid for they are no longer the big kids on the block.
At least half of my sets are based on those timid coyotes.
