Finally arrowed one - 08/06/21 05:37 AM
Last night luck was with me and I got my first archery roe buck. I was behind a stone wall next to a pasture and when I called he came out of the woods on the far side and started to feed about 100 yards away from me. After a couple minutes I called again and he came like a rocket right at me, jumped the 4 foot stone wall, got behind me and did a U-turn and jumped the wall again. I whistled at him a few times and he stopped broadside at 30 meters.
They are a small deer and very skittish, so I was glad to finally get one. There are more here than at the old place and it is easier to sneak around.

That's pretty cool. How do you typically hunt those, on stand or on the stalk?

Nice action!! I saw a collection of roe buck skull caps that an old surgeon in this metro got as a young officer in the Army during the occupation of Germany right after WWII got done. An interesting critter...

Thanks for the comments.
I thought about building a couple tree stands, but these deer move around alot. I use a call, and set up next to pastures in the evenings. During the rut they will come to a call pretty well, so it is just a matter of finding the right spot and getting lucky.
I'm by no means the world's best archer, but I do practice a bit. When I hunted Alberta and Alaska for moose, I was good out to 60 yards, but these deer are a small target, so I only practice to 40 meters.
Now for the backstrap BBQ.

Nice shot.
Being used to white tail deer and how much they communicate with their tails, roe deer always look a little strange, being tailless. How do the roe deer taste compared to a whitetail deer?

Re: Finally arrowed one - 08/06/21 08:13 PM
KeithC... Thanks. They taste great. I've only eaten whitetail once but it was perfectly cooked backstraps from Brule, Wisconsin. These deer are small, but the hind quarters eat almost as well as the backstraps.
Newhouse... Yes they do. It has grown here over the last 20 years or so, but is still smaller than in the states. You do have to take a 4 hour course to be legal, but maybe that's a good thing. As for guns and such here, it is easier than the US. I can walk into a store and buy 5 or 6 long guns cash and carry and walk out with them. I can order ammo online, and even buy a gun online with a scan of my hunting license.
And there is no longer a King in France.... only a little puss as a president, so no... I didn't shoot the King's deer.

Great JOB !!!! You have proven my point. Any one can hit a giant deer with a bow. TAKES skill to hit the little ones. But that's a dandy story . Glad you got one.

That looks like a big one.
Not as much beading as i would have expected.
But maybe that's a regional thing??

How many pounds of meat once butchered would that deer produce?

Re: Finally arrowed one - 08/07/21 05:43 AM
Waggler, you're right. The ones I've gotten before have more texture toward the bases. This one had good length but not a lot of mass at the bases. I'll see what the ones look like during the driven hunts starting in September.
DanN... I figure about 20-25 pounds of meat all boned out. They are easy to drag out of the field at that size. They run between 20 and 30 kilos on the hoof and this guy was toward the lower end of that range.
JByrd... I agree they are a small target, not the same kill zone as a Yukon moose.
