Cut around Chicago - 08/18/21 12:16 PM

I plan to use I-90 going west, what is the best route to stay out of Chicago traffic. Thank you.

39 to rockford, then I90 north.

I try to Avoid 294 and 94 at all costs

Where are you heading. I would cut south on 39 to 80. Drove this route many years and it's much fast than going to the tolls roads. Traffic is much better as well

What's your destination?

80 is a good east/west way to cut around the south of Chicago.

come through between 2 and 4 in the morning

and no matter which way you take make sure you have an IPass if you enter the ILL state

they no longer have any cashiers or other way to pay

You can pay online afterwards. Go to their website and select the booths you drove through, it'll add up your bill.

IPass is cheaper in the long run though.

Re: Cut around Chicago - 08/18/21 01:37 PM

if you don't go pay before they send you the bill based on your license plate they add a service charge I think 20 dollars

my cousins drove down to TN and had never done tolls before during covid there was no way to pay so just drive on

10 dollars in tolls between down and back 40 in service fee 20 for each day is I think what they said.

vs you pay a 10 dollar deposit on the box or you may even be able to register your plate number to an account and put what you will need for tolls on it that money stays on that account at least for very long time if not indefinitely

yes there is a way to pay by plate I just checked their site https://www.getipass.com/

tax evasion might be the only reason they would bring out the ILL state police for you on a toll way

What if u dont pay their tolls? Is it like the communist speed cameras i. Sioux city that it can only affect ur drivers license as an in state resident? Its all civil. I doubt they send to collections.

You should be OK driving through Chicago if you're in an APC (Armored Personnel Carrier). smile

Stay on 80 instead of taking the split at Gary IN. Go to Des Moines IA. Go north on 35 to 90. 80 slows down during rush hour too but not bad. Avoid some tolls that way.

Thanks, Danny I will take that route.

Pretty sad when you need to detour around an American city. Several years ago when headed to the national in Wisconsin we were advised to detour around Chicago.

You’re welcome . Avoid rush hour in Cleveland if you can. It can be a real mess too

Re: Cut around Chicago - 08/18/21 05:03 PM

get an ipass though, you pay more for the tolls if you dont have one

Not a bad plan. Don't stop on the south side either

Re: Cut around Chicago - 08/18/21 05:17 PM

80 thru the south side and I'd suggest going north on 380 @ Iowa City to 4 lane 20 @ Waterloo. Run 20 west til I-29 in Sioux City. North to 90 @ Sioux Falls and then head west young man. Head west.
