Propane tank filled

Propane tank filled - 08/19/21 08:28 PM

Had our yearly fill up of the 500 gallon propane tank that we own. Last 4 years price was less than $1.00 a gallon. This year the cheapest I could find, and I called 6 propane dealers, was $1.38.9 cash price. This is a 41.2% increase. Whom do I thank? mad

Last year I contracted for winter at 1.029. This year the cheapest I can find as of Tuesday was 1.589. This winter is going to hurt.

Our AC/Heat Pump failed at the hunting camp. Replaced with the new models that have air handlers in every room. The cost was $3200 but might be cheaper in the long run because of increased efficiency.

When I built a house at the coast, I called the electrical Co-op to ask the engineer about high-efficiency AC. He advised me to spend extra money on insulation rather than efficiency. Said they all rusted out at about seven years on the coast. I got 12 from one and sold the house before the other needed replacing.

Those prices are nothing compared to here ! neighbor filled up a 600 gallon Propane tank last Winter . He remodeled the inside of his house. All new insulation and new drywall on all three floors. Cathedral ceilings in Living Room and Family room. 14 FEET HIGH !! He cranked the Boiler heat up to 76 degrees for a whole Month , so that the drywall and paint would be good and dry. At the end of that Month, he blew through the whole 600 gallon Propane tank. $1,300 to heat that house for just one Month !!

20 LB BBQ tanks contain about 4.6 gallons of propane, I believe.

Sure is ! After that one Month, he switched out the Propane Boiler to Natural Gas. Still can't figure out why his Natural Gas bill is so high; during the Winter Months. Between $600 to $700 a Month , just for Natural Gas. Yes, he has Gas Hot Water and a Gas Stove , and a Gas Clothes Dryer. But, he has 12 inches of Fiberglass insulation in the walls and in the Roof area. On top of that, he has the heat set at only 60 degrees.

If you do not like the price, get yourself a chainsaw and go out and cut about 6-8 cords of wood (might need more/less depending on location and insulation). That is what I do. If I was smart I would just work 2 extra overtimes a year and heat with propane. But, I like being out in the woods.

Does 500 gallons get you guys through the winter?

Last years contract price was $1.95. This year our contract price is $2.32. I shopped it and all were within a few cents. I don’t own my own tank.

I only have the tank filled once a year and average about 285 gallons of propane total for the furnace, water heater and gas stove. I also cut, split, stack and burn 6 cords of firewood from our property. Just a little miffed as to why the cost of propane has gone up so dramatically in a year!

Just like anything prices fluctuate all the time. You just gotta be ready when prices go low to buy and store it. Bought 4500 gallons last fall at a great price at that'll last me a while.

Nobody is to blame. It's just economics. The price of oil and natural gas is higher this year.
