My dad and I have shot an 8 bore a friend owns. 200 grains black powder and 3 ounces shot. The gun weighs 13 pounds, so recoil is no worse than a regular shotgun.

FYI, you can still miss clay birds with that much shot.

Funny. I hit clay birds throwing rocks.

I believe they called them "Punt Guns" and were mounted on the bow of the boat and meant to be used to water swat resting ducks at night.

I read and saw pictures of some brothers finding their Grandpa's 4 ga. In Outdoor life 20 30+ yrs ago .

Funny photos they had.but definitely meant to be in the wooden gun mounts.

My great grandfather had a few of these punt guns at the farm when I was a youngster. From what I remember they had two mounted in the front of the boat at a low angle and two each mounted left and right of that angled about 22 degrees. They would row out into the raft of ducks or geese slowly. When they got to the raft they pulled the cord firing the two front guns and swatted the birds on the surface. The others were pulled seconds later to know down the birds getting off the water. If I remember correctly said they were equivalent of 2 gauge. Grandpa was a very interesting man and had a ton of stories.
