Oiling my truck

Oiling my truck - 09/04/21 05:37 AM

I'm not talking about changing oil. I'm talking about oiling certain spots to mitigate rust. It works, but it's messy & not fun. I even got a spray bottle & have been spraying behind the fenders the last couple years. It's got my '09 looking better than most similar aged models. I use motor oil. I have greased the fender edges before. Road salt in the northern climate sure is tough on vehicles. Some people get a spot of rust & only try treating it from the front side, but ya wanna get oil in behind it. Sometimes I use a rag or brush.

How often and what time of year?

Re: Oiling my truck - 09/04/21 08:50 AM

A couple times a year would be ideal, say May & October.

Oil creeps, so if you do it right it will penetrate into the rusty areas.

Re: Oiling my truck - 09/04/21 09:47 AM

Been doing it for years. Im cheap so I use my used motor oil and it shoots real well through an undercoat gun if you have an air compressor. Shoot it inside doors, tailgate as well as fender wells and frame. Spraying in warm months works better as the oil viscosity is thinner and it creeps better. A little messy as it drips for a day or two...not environmentally friendly, but still less oil loss than if I was driving a Ford or Chevy . ..Lol

I use the oil and also Fluid Film in places also. Pulling rubber plugs in rocker panels and spraying FF inside. Remove sill plate screws, putting thin red nozzle in screw hole then spray. Tail gates and hinges are all sprayed. You know tailgates on modern pickups are a few thousand bucks now.....

Been mentioned here before, but many people (body shops) recommend doing it with USED oil.

A friend of mine has an old Dodge pickup he oils every spring with used motor oil. I know the truck is at least 20 years old and it might be 25. Can't argue with success.

We get our veicles under oiled each summer. At Krown rust proofing. My 07 dodge is rust free. It pays to look after them. old 243

Worked with an old timer years ago.He would take a rag and a bucket of diesel fuel and wipe down his whole truck every fall.
It dulled the paint and stunk to high heaven for a while but he never had a speck of rust on his old truck, and he drove back on forth to work every day on a heavily salted hi way for years.

Time well spent, and better than high dollar coatings.

Was having the same thing done 3 X a year for years on my '99 s-10. No rust but I too switched over to fluid film which only needs to be done once a year. Got the idea of fluid film here on this web site = good stuff.......jk

I do it every year in the fall. I use chainsaw bar lube. It's cheap and sticky.

Re: Oiling my truck - 09/05/21 12:34 AM

a lot of guys i know are switching to a product called N.H.O.U back to black. suppose to be guaranteed to last 2 years. ive found fluid film and other oils get scrubbed off by slush & snow on the back half of my toyota tacoma. still oily up front. i put ramps on same side to tip the truck one way, spray it, then switch sides.

Re: Oiling my truck - 09/05/21 04:46 AM

If using a sprayer, sometimes the oil needs to be thinned down so it sprays easier.

Re: Oiling my truck - 09/05/21 02:00 PM

Are you spraying older Toyota chassis? They has a recall I think.

Re: Oiling my truck - 09/05/21 02:06 PM

Mine is a Chev Silverado.

Some vehicle makes are certainly designed better, but our winter road salt is sure hard on vehicles

Re: Oiling my truck - 09/05/21 05:09 PM

I can see some oil remaining in places on suspension an frame where used fluid film in may , some wash off, plan on do better job later in month or Oct , probly well take half a day at least to do

Re: Oiling my truck - 09/05/21 06:36 PM

Yes, it is a slow process to do it right, Coonman.

I have rubbed grease on the fendors before. Sometimes I can't decide whether to use oil or grease. I tend to lean more towards oil it seems.

Re: Oiling my truck - 09/05/21 07:12 PM

Burnt Cylinder Oil (used motor oil) is tops for rust-proofing....Wiped down rusty traps not in use with it years ago, they still look great.

I think you got it figured out, Dave. Good job. You want to do my dad's truck once you are done with yours?

They make Fluid Film Black now, better formula. And you're paying too much for your Fluid Film. $ 8.95 for the Aerosol and $38.00 for a gallon.

I have a gravel driveway and only just recently noticed the white footprints left behind where we park from the winter salt and calcium chloride dripping off the vehicles. Been here ten years and this is the first time it ever jumped out at me. That's last winters residue.

I recently had my 2014- F350 superduty oiled up ...
I used a company called Rust Kote , they did a great job ..
The product smells like fluid film ..
I will do this annually..gotta help ..

Re: Oiling my truck - 09/27/21 12:40 PM

This oiling has to be done when you buy a new vehicle….or at the most a 2-3 year old vehicle. Heck ….Iam seeing rust bubbles on 2017 Chevy …Dodge and other vehicles. And you aluminum Ford guys still need to oil the frames and gas and brakes and tranny lines too. [Linked Image]

This pic was taken 2 years ago of a 2011 Dodge Truck….

I've never used Fluid Film. I see it is quite expensive. What would be the benefit of using Fluid Film over motor oil?

Got a price here….34.00 per gallon…Fluid film has lanolin in it….won’t harm rubber bushings . But hey….spraying something under your truck/ car is better than nothing

Just ask Dave for details on fluid film. He knows more about it than I ever wanted to know.
