20 Gauge 2 3/4" 3/4 oz Deer Season XP

Looking for some product reviews. Has anyone happened to have used these? They are fairly new. Only a couple years, they've been around. I can't find much for reviews on-line.

Too heavy for the 20 Ga platform in my opinion. I like the lighter slugs like the Remington copper solids at 275 grains or so. They seem to give much much more consistent patterns at longer distances. I would feel comfortable shooting my 20 ga slug gun to 150 yards.

The heavier slugs tend to lose more steam at longer distances and pattern inconsistently (in my experience). This is why I went with the 20 over the 12.

Also depends on the type of gun/barrel you are shooting, is it rifled? I can drive tacks with the Rem copper solids and my Savage 220

Awesome, that will be a sweet setup. With the way ammo is, I would buy them. Buy enough to get you through a season or two and dial your gun into them. I'm sure they will kill a deer, I'm not sure there's a hunk of metal flying 1600 fps that won't!

I'm just a freak about patterning things, but under 100 yards those will probably do just fine

I really wanted to use Remington Accutips, as I know they are awesome (assuming they patterned well in this gun) but when I finally found some (on-line none local) they want $22+ for a box of 5 with a 2 box limit plus shipping. I found the Winchesters for $16 a box so I'm going to go pattern them and see how they do. Be nice to hear other's experience with them as well.

I switched to a 350 legend. Legal in IA now.

Much cheaper ammo and easier on shoulder too.

making the solid copper slug, the machine shop I

worked for produced the slugs on a davenport screw machine.

I still have a canister of them in the shed, used to have

a bucket of them but they shot well out of my tc renegade

they are 328 gr

the 260gr Winchester dual bonds are my go too they are labeled 1800fps , and they make a nice hole in both sides , it is a pistol bullet with an open hollowpoint

with availability what is is , I would buy a box drive strait to the range shoot a group and if the group looks good rush back and buy all I thought I needed for several seasons

this 2 box limit things is really hard with 5 round boxes of slugs you basically need 5 to know if they group well minimum 3 then 2 to confirm the sight changes and that leaves you 5 to hunt with it sure isn't much.

not sure why in the height of a shortage Winchester seems to have released several new ammunition's


I keep seeing 18 dollar a box for 10 rounds 12ga segmented rifled slugs 1600fps 1 ounce really you needed a slug to be more devastating at short range , why not keep pumping out the same old super X slugs that have worked for ever , marketing I suppose and cost these are marketed as home personal defense and are 10 rounds to the box for about the same price as a 15 round box of the regular slugs would have been.

Hornady SST best out there if you can find them

Very inconsistent grouping with those for me. I guess every gun is different!

I'm a neck shooter, it can be completed with a shotgun at 150 yards

when you can just pull the 308 out and shoot them it basically could not get easier

when you can't use a rifle and you have to play shotgun games you can accept a max range of 50-75 yards with foster slugs or you can get into rifled barrels and sabot slugs

part of the problem is the ammo manufactures keep changing sabot slug designs

like the dual bonds I use , have been discontinued , luckily I have 3-4 more years worth saved up

even though WI went rifle state wide each township may introduce a shotgun only ordinance , that is slugs only no buck shot

if you can alwasy get the deer inside 50 yards I would just use foster slugs cheap and easy , but when you want to get that one hold up at 85 yards that is when the sabots shine , rifle like accuracy and 45-70 like knock down.

heck if the township would even go strait wall I would have a 45-70 ready to go

it is a great hunting location on private ground I don't want to give up.

I've never shot a deer with a rifle. My shotgun's barrel isn't rifled and I just buy whatever $5 box of slugs Walmart has on sale. But I also don't use a scope. Would need to waste more ammo sighting it in every year if I did.

I shoot whatever is rolling around in the door panel or console. Could be my own or some rich buddy of mine from last year. Don’t know what brand...that wears off pretty quick. Long as they the right gauge...send em. Been killing deer with shotgun slugs almost 30 yrs. And No, none of that tree stand laze away the day crap. We push em out at Mach 10 and you better bring your A game for shootin on the run. Keep yer powder dry

I an also at 30 years and we also push them out at Warp 3 and 98% of the time plane old fosters from a smooth barrel are good at 25 yards almost anything works

man is it frustrating shooting at 130 yards would be a stupid easy rifle shot and the doe is standing there looking right at you and you are all over around it then it runs off. that is where the sabots pay one shot and they drop

if something is deadly to 300 yards I sure as heck want to be able to put it on target at least half that distance

I want to good group at 90 yards with my 12 ga and a good group at 60 with the 20ga they just don't have the weight to stabilize to 100

when your hunting rifle country handicapped with a smooth bore , your just not going to make those 100yard + shots i have a couple 12ga that if it isn't windy do well at 100 yards with Winchester Super X foster slugs.

these sabots the good ones any way make a rifled barrel shotgun group an honest 3 inches at 100 yards some better than that it's like a 45-70 legal in a shotgun zone.

Very accurate in my gun,,,, but they did not preform well on deer. Only poked a small hole straight through, no expansion. You could cover the holes on both sides with your pinky finger. Two shots through the ribs at 50 yards, deer never even stumbled. I thought I missed until checked and saw a little blood in the snow for about 30 yards before it started pouring out. Yes it killed the deer but if it hadn't been for snow cover I may have missed those first few drops. This was several years ago, and I heard the same report of poor results that I had back then. They may have changed them by now, must have if people are recommending them.



I had one in an AR platform. It was kinda fussy on cycling. Sent it in several times finally got it going but never fully trusted it, so I sold it. I don't care for bolt guns for deer, can't work them or pumps well with my bad shoulders. The .44 mag Henry works good too but wanted a little change.

Understood. I have a 350 leg in CVA single shot. Simple, easy and a real shooter!

Can't see paying more for venison than beef.

It's all about the antlers. If we were only hunting for meat, any old slug will do. Heck it ain't hard to kill does and little bucks they are everywhere, and we'll kill them to fill the freezer,,,, but if the buck of a lifetime shows up at 150+ I wanna be able to reach out and touch him too.

I tried antler soup once but it wasn't very good.

3 inch antlers are all we need where I hunt in Michigan. Don't hit the back straps with those slugs!

Several years ago my SIL. killed the huge 14 pointer that now hangs on her wall.

Every time they look at that mount, they are reminded how horrible that meat was.
