Turned down a good job offer today.

Turned down a good job offer today. - 09/27/21 09:08 PM

I was asked to take over the trapping of the nuisance bears in the area starting next year.
It pays really really good but with a bunch of cages set in several towns all summer that have to be checked daily it ties you down.
Good job for a young feller.

Might be an option but there are lots of bears so gonna have to attend the traps to move the bears or move the cages if they are not producing.Like fur trapping-gotta be there.

In your area I think you would be a very busy man. A couple of trapped bears would be a all day job.

I'm guessing that if you had a "by the book" warden that a cell can wouldn't fulfill the 24 hour live holding trap check rule

Its the kind of a job that has to be done right.
Checking traps with cameras just wouldnt cut it.
You have to tend traps to do a good efficient job,of getting rid of the problem bears quickly. This means if you have an empty cage,it needs to be moved. You gotta get rid of the bears in town forthwith.Under the nuisance bear protocol you get paid for every day the trap is on site. You cant just let a cage sit there empty for more than one night, you gotta read the bearsign and move the traps to intercept bears. There are 5 cages.
We have no problems with the co's here, they are good friends with all the trappers. We work together with co's all the time.

The job would take up too much of my time that is why I passed on it.I am normally busy enough with the nuisance beaver.

Yes,some years more than a full time job.

I don't blame you. Plus you would have to figure out locations of where to release them then drive there to release them.

Augh fun with the paint ball gun has gone away with the pass of this job.

wise decision especial since you don't know what next season will be like.

They are released about 75 miles north of town in a BMA.I have rode with Art(the trapper that currently does nuisance bear) when he releases bears.
Be fun to let some big ones go in Toronto.LOL.
The expenses for the job is very low compared to the wage for removing a bear.

I asked awhile ago for the same purpose. This was the response i got from the Ontario legislation specialist.

"I spoke with our legislation specialist and was advised the following:

In accordance with Ontario Regulation 667/98 subsection 25(3), a person shall inspect every live holding trap set by the person at least once a day. Inspection includes a physical in-person check of the trap. Checking traps solely through the use of electronic devices alone would not comply with the regulation.

That is not accurate saskfly.
In the Patricial portion of Ontario(North of the e-w CN line) there is no check time on live holding traps.
Outside the Patricia portion of Ontario daily checks are a requirement for restraining traps.

What happens when the bear/s you relocated come back? Which they do more often than not. Use a foot snare or shoot? Just moving culvert traps to try to catch educated bears all summer sounds boring and ineffective.

That is good you would have a location already established. I know here captured bears are taken all over the state to be released in various areas. Low overhead is always good. The time and wear and tear is the most expensive part

There is no shortage of places here to release bears, the thing about bears is they can travel great long distances thru wilderness to return to where they were caught. They have great homing instincts.
Some Bears are marked when released and if they return more than once they are taken further or the alternative method is used, lol.
All the crown land here is marked out into Bear management areas. These areas, similar to registered traplines can be applied for by people who wish to manage bears thru outfitting hunters.
Often the nuisance bear trappers work with these bear managers to decide where to release the nuisance bearsNot many return. The trick is to re locate them where they can get natural food and less competition from resident bears(already removed by the managers/outfitters.

No,just like any other trapping, sometimes you have to move a trap to catch the animal.
You cannot have the cages sitting empty, you have to catch the bears.Setting the cage right at the problem area normally will get a bear or two,but occasionally some bears ignore the bait because they prefer the original food source. In those cases you have to Identify where the bear is coming from and locate the cage and bait away from the original food source,to where the bear is coming from.
Bears are easy to catch if you know what you are doing.Just moving traps around for no reason is not on.
You cant shoot bears in town but you can tranquilize them and remove them.
Arthur, the trapper that currently does the nuisance bear job has very rarely had to tranquilize one.He knows how to trap bear.

You must have never had to deal with a bear that doesn't want to crawl back into a culvert trap after being slammed in the butt by the door or caught in one previously. I know our state bear guys won't even put culvert traps out because they think trap shy bears will see them and leave the area. The job sounds like busy work to me and accomplishing very little.

We deal with every type of bear that you can imagine, females with cubs, starving bears, harassed bears etc.No different than a professional beaver trapper,we get rid of them all.You have to,it is even more imperative with bears in a small town. Our program has been ongoing for at least 20 years and we have removed hundreds of bears. The municipalitys are very happy with our program.
Usually remove between 10 and 30 bears depending on the year in our municipality alone and similar in the others.
Our traps are very efficient.

One year in Timmins the trapper removed over 60.The worst years are in the fall, when there is a blueberry crop failure.Starving bears are not hard to trap.
