A tax on cow farts

A tax on cow farts - 09/28/21 07:34 PM

https://mullin.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=4949

In an attempt to eliminate fossil fuels, this legislation would impose a “fee” on all methane emissions, including in our agriculture industry. We all know that a fee is just a tax and that consumers are the ones who will pay for it. The tax is estimated to cost $6,500 per dairy cow, $2,600 per head of cattle, and $500 per swine each year. That is more than what the animals are worth, it’ll run ranchers out of business.

It's time to think hard about coming together and using our rights enumerated in the Second Amendment, to put America back on the Right Path.

Why don't we just save the fuel that trucks need to bring the milk, meat, and vegetables to big cities. City dwellers can grow all the food they need on their roof-tops...

I'm sure it will only affect the rich ranchers and dairymen -- so we are all good right? time to cut off food to the cities -- NOW. they can buy it all from mexi- cali -- china, brazil.

Re: A tax on cow farts - 09/28/21 10:18 PM

Will never be that high as the value of the milk is not that high and no cows are not worth anywhere near $6,500 for commercial production cows. Also the bulk of the methane comes through the mouth as the cow coughs up the cud and chews it up after it has been in the rumen for some time to ferment. So this is not about farts at all, and very unlikely to be a high tax even if there ever is a tax. On the bright side for dairy cows maybe they can sell methane reduction credits if they control more methane release. We are already seeing some revenue streams from manure that are almost as profitable as the profit from milk. The only real big hitch to that for farmers is that those profits are for the really large scale operations which if the trend continues many what we call larger farms. 500-2,000 cows will not be able to compete.

I think its a great thing. Just think of all the cow fart counter jobs that will open up. I am pretty sure with only six months intensive training the average liberal arts bachelors degree holder ,will be able to successfully count cow farts to apply the correct tax to each animal

Re: A tax on cow farts - 09/29/21 01:13 AM

If the House passes the 3.5+ trillion bill, then it will be a game changer for the green energy companies. That amount of money will make sure that Wallstreet takes notice, and I fear it will not be in the working man's best interest.

While I along with everyone here, believe in sound stewardship of our natural resources, I think this bill (if passed), may put us over the edge.

This is exactly the plan IMO. The goal is to get totally rid of small and medium sized farmers and ranchers.

Re: A tax on cow farts - 09/29/21 01:33 AM

Just a start to the government owning the farm ground and food supply. Along with the education system, energy production, medical world and whatever else that is important to capitalism and a free sociaty. We are getting our first taste of communism. Believe it or not. The midterm election next year will tell us the truth if our voting system will be the continuation of a Republic or the final straw of what our founders gave us.

Re: A tax on cow farts - 09/29/21 01:37 AM

Yes, I grew up surrounded by 20-50 cow dairy farms and there were almost 150,000 in WI when I was in HS. Today WI has less then 8,000 dairy farms. We all worship capitalism until it crushes us. If we are going to maintain a rural presence with a lot of smaller operations then there will need to be even higher subsidies for those families to stay farming. When we subsidize, bushels, tons, bales, acres and per head and not people we subsidize those that produce the most or own the most. This is not new, the migration from the farm to the suburban and urban areas started after WW1 and really gained speed after WW11. Now days with the new technology and much more money available for those with assets it continues.

How about making it legal to sell whatever you you produce, to anybody who wants to buy it, for whatever price you can agree on? To much government is how we got here.

Makes to much sense and doesn't allow govt to dip their beak.

Re: A tax on cow farts - 09/29/21 02:15 AM

There are many that are starting those operations today and they are coming on board faster now then ever. What percent of the total food supply will they reach in 5, 10 50 years we don't no. It will take a long time or a major shift in culture etc. Another reason is we live in a litigious world and many small operations are not going to be able to provide the liability coverage they may need to run a profitable business. Another issue is stable, dependable, paying customers to provide the income one needs to run a business, raise a family, provide for HC insurance and save for retirement. It takes a lot of grocery bags of "stuff" to do that.
If we took the AG subsidies that we pay today to subsidize those families we could spend the same but delivery system would be much different and also we may lose millions of acres of export markets and would wind up idling millions of acres unless better uses were found.

That is exactly right, the big corporate farms got bigger because of the subsidies and government interventions. Croney capitalism should be confused with free market capitalism.

Re: A tax on cow farts - 09/29/21 04:23 PM

That works for saving fuel but if rural populations are making a living selling food to the 85% of the people in the metro areas then they won't have much for a living, if a life at all. The rural landscape has always been a resource that provides for many but with limited populations doing the work. We left subsistence agriculture just before and during WW1. The transition has not always been smooth or always forward but it has taken place. In 1949 during the post WW11, Marshall Plan and other significant commodity needs around the world the base for our Farm subsidy programs were created. Much of that was an attempt to slow the flow of rural population decline, but as we have seen over time this has not been the case in almost all rural areas of the USA. As I have stated in the past we subsidized commodities, production and acres not people or families and it did not take more than one generation to figure out how to be the big winners in that system. With many of the major Ag states having been in long term control by rural GOP senators the chance for change in the current system is not very high.
Now every 5 years the battle over the farm bill is SNAP versus commodity subsidies which means we spend even more to maintain the old, plus the new.

Is having to pay $100 per coyote and $50 per raccoon in this legislation? You will need to pay to play.

If only we could find a way to bottle these methane emissions, think of all the money we could save each year by replacing fossil fuels. Duh.

Are other countries planning to eliminate all fossil fuels or are we the only one stupid enough to believe we can make it happen?

As backwards as these clowns are, I figured us trappers would have to start paying to trap any old time.

Re: A tax on cow farts - 09/29/21 07:10 PM

This is how they figure the 3.5 trillion spending bill will be free, regulation fees! When the costs are passed on to us, we'll pay $10 for a gallon of milk, $8 a gallon for gas, $29 a pound for chuck steak... they don't consider this inflation also, just the cost of having them saving the planet???

Re: A tax on cow farts - 09/29/21 09:50 PM

Saving the planet from farting mammals will cost endless moola.
Do gnats pass gas? There are an awful lot of them and I wish they'd pass away.
