Been doing some musky fishing

Been doing some musky fishing - 09/29/21 12:00 AM

Been doing some musky fishing this year. Best one is 48" so far.

Up to 9 decent fish this year, and tons of big pike. Been a blast.

Every fish except two have been on lures I've made which is also pretty cool.

Re: Been doing some musky fishing - 09/29/21 12:10 AM

I also started making cedar through wired lures. Hand carved, airbrushed and epoxied. The dive and rise jerkbait has caught 3 so far.

Also made 30 or so bucktails. They work great.

Making lures has been almost as much fun as catching fish with them.

I run 3.

8' 6" st croix legend tournament med heavy, fast with a 400 series diawa lexa and 80 lb power pro. This is best for throwing bucktails a mile, and swim baits like shadzillas.

7' 6" st croix mojo musky heavy fast with an abu garcia rev toro beast with 80 lb power pro. Strictly jerkbaits and dive and rise

7' Xtra heavy e cat catfish rod with a big saltwater Penn and 100 lb power pro for Trolling big baits like the top lure. It's 18" long and pulls like mad, so I went heavy for the Trolling rod lol

It’s got to be pretty satisfying catching those big musky, or any fish really, on crankbaits you created.

Ya, its a cool feeling.

The dive and rise jerkbait is actually the Belle of the ball. It dives and rises like a suick, but it walks side to side too. Triggers strikes like crazy, and I know of nothing with a similar action.

Bucktails are the mainstay though. When its dark , or fish are real active they work awesome

Not sure. Since none were truly massive , (the 48 was nice tho), I don't weigh them. Just a length and back they go.

There is a lengthy x belly girth calculator online that estimates weight pretty accurately, so my next addition is a soft tape to measure girth.

Hanging them by the head is hard on them so we avoid it. I actually don't think I own a scale lol

I will need to up the annoying factor if I wanna make it big.

My wife watches cooking videos of talentless hack home cooks with a bazillion subscribers and to a name they all are annoying as heck.

I think that's the key, be super annoying. It drowns out the lack of content

Nice Hutchy!

Your making me want to go catch some. Been about ten years since I've been up your way catching them. For quite a few years we'd go up to Pigeon lake in the Kawartha system and fish a week. Always did well, then for some reason it went dead.

Good memories tho!

You’re slaying the Musky man! Nice!

I went to Eagle Lake a couple years ago for 2 days of Musky fishing. It was October and all I could think of was fox trapping. Never caught a single fish on that lake.

We marked a ton of walleye, but the guy I was fishing with wouldn’t let me fish for them. Musky only! Son of a gun!

Ended up fishing a small lake up against the hiway on the way home and caught a bunch of little Jacks. That and the drive was awesome!

Eagle is solid.

I am going next Sept.

My buddy just got back from eagle. Saw 40 musky , and caught 5 or 6.

Only bucktails up there, fast as you can reel.

So much fun.

Our best night last year. A 29 and a 31.5". Double header, tangled on the way in and were netted in one shot. We went home after that because nothing was going to top the double!

Re: Been doing some musky fishing - 09/29/21 03:36 AM

Those are some great looking lures you make plus some really nice muskies. I can appreciate the satisfaction you get from catching them on home made lures since I used to do that myself on a double buzz blade bucktail I assembled from various parts. It would run on the surface and produce some spectacular strikes and follows.I think the blades "ticking" together were the key in producing sound and vibration that they just had to attack. I caught 33 muskies in 3 summers on them without going that often and most were over 45 inches with several at the 50 inch mark. So much excitement and fun. Good job, Man!

I'd love to catch one that big, here's a limit from a cold October night right before a snowstorm when I couldn't keep them off the hook. [Linked Image]

Beauty. I wish we could keep that many. Our limits are 2 fish under 16", or one under 16 and one over 22.1.

After every fish I wonder why I'd ever fish for anything else. Im attempting to break 50" this fall. We will see how it goes. Lol. I managed to get my father in law into some serious smallmouth this summer. I've got a spot where every year you can catch 19 and 20" fish till you are tired of catching them.

A few eaters from that day. Great fish fry.

You can fish them any way you like. Lots of trolling, but that's not my game.

It's a huge amount of water, so there's everything and anything you want to fish...weeds, rocks, open water, shallow, deep, whatever.

We got a 56 incher this spring. The biggest muskie I've personally ever seen.

Very nice Hutch!

I am kind of spoiled as I lived right on Lake St Clair/Detroit River all my life... Musky were never "the fish of 1000 casts" for me, they were a nuisance when bass or walleye fishing LOL.

That is not to take away from the achievement though, clearly you have a talent for making lures and catching big fish! It seems that whenever I target them, we don't have the same success as when we accidentally catch them while fishing for something else LOL.

We have had some absolute monsters surface in our decoys on sunny afternoons while duck hunting in November... big shovel headed beasts

LOL, I remember this story. They are thick around here... most people fish the lake and don't realize just how many of them are in the river.
Send me a PM when you are headed down and maybe we can grab a beer and I can show you some spots on the map.

There are a couple of custom lure makers here that you may wish to visit. It has suddenly become very trendy to jig for musky here (not sure it's popular elsewhere)

To keep here they must be over 54", as we classify as a trophy fishery. Some lakes are 48.

I can do without ever eating musky. Too many pike, bass, walleye and laker around for that.
