Mobil1 makes so good oil.

Re: Motor oil question - 10/11/21 11:38 PM

If you change your own oil, for once you might be able to trust the person that did something to your vehicle.

Re: Motor oil question - 10/11/21 11:41 PM

Costco oil or Wal-Mart oil will suffice. Expensive oil just costs more.

Re: Motor oil question - 10/11/21 11:44 PM

I used to get Walmart oil but all synethic , Mobil 1 expensive , was go get 10 qts, someone post negative on stop brand in old post an can't find it

Re: Motor oil question - 10/11/21 11:50 PM

All prememium brand oils will work. If you change at proper intervals, all brands will work just fine.

Re: Motor oil question - 10/12/21 12:00 AM

Citgo oil was on sale last week at Blain's Farm and Fleet for $1.99 a qt. after the sale price and rebate. You missed the sale. Honestly Coonman, it isn't going to matter with the truck you're driving, just get the cheapest oil you can right now and use it.

Now the guys in MN and northern WI can go to Fleet/Farm and get the 5qt jugs of Citgo oil for $5.99 after the sale price and rebate this week through the 16th.

Re: Motor oil question - 10/12/21 12:03 AM

Citgo oil in the gray jug is synthetic blend. It's not full synthetic. There is a difference. Please one of the guys on here that's a mechanic look at this thread and reply.

Re: Motor oil question - 10/12/21 01:45 AM

there is a sale 2.19 a quart for the 5w30 and 5w20

it works just fine it is bottled for blains by citco

https://www.farmandfleet.com/produc...-fleet-premium-5w30-grade-motor-oil.html

if you perfer full synthetic https://www.farmandfleet.com/produc...fleet-5w30-full-synthetic-motor-oil.html it is 21.45 for 5 of the 1 quart bottles a savings over the on sale Valvoline synthetic in the larger jug

Been down this rabbit hole before with him.

Re: Motor oil question - 10/12/21 01:52 AM

I'd run a high mileage non synthetic , 10w30

Unless you're relying on leaks to keep the rust down on your undercarriage

Re: Motor oil question - 10/12/21 04:28 AM

You really don't need synthetic if you change your oil regularly, in my opinion. I've been using conventional oil in my 2000 v-6 Tacoma, and after 713,000+ miles it uses a quart every 2,000 miles. Motor never been rebuilt, only rear main seal replaced. Oil and wix filter is changed once a month, which is between 3 and 4 thousand miles.

Re: Motor oil question - 10/12/21 02:49 PM

I saw a test comparison of synthetic oils; Mobil One, Valvoline, and Amazon Basic. The Amazon and Mobile One were comparable in the tests. The cost of the Amazon was quite a bit lower than the Mobile One.

I've been using Valvoline synthetic in the past. I might try the Amazon Basic my next oil change.

I changed oil in a vehicle that required some Fancy European formula oil......over 12 bucks a quart and it held 8.

Re: Motor oil question - 10/12/21 03:09 PM

I use Shell Rotella T4 10W30 in everything from my wood splitter, the car , tractor and truck. If it has oil in it, its that stuff. Yes its for diesel engines. But if its good for diesels, its great for gassers as bearing pressures are way lower in those. Just having the one oil takes the confusion out of the whole oil change game and makes some room on the shelves in the shop. When I started this regimen, I sent off oil samples after every oil change to the Blackstone institute for analysis and they passed with flying colors. So i'll stick with it now.

Re: Motor oil question - 10/12/21 05:03 PM

X2 on the rotella. We buy it by the 5 gallon buckets. We have 7 diesel trucks in the family plus a couple tractors and an old john deer lift. All of them get 15w40 rotella t4. To change the oil in all 7 Cummins it takes 84 quarts

Re: Motor oil question - 10/12/21 05:35 PM

Shell Rotella is good stuff.

Re: Motor oil question - 10/12/21 08:29 PM

I call farm fleet , they have synthetic blend citgp , that shop use when pay oil change an like get same oil as go again, I been add conventional oil to motor as use oil , it is not fill synethic ,just blend, so I take aslong as not full synthetic , it ok to add conventional oil to it as mix between oil changes as use oil, fill synethic an conventional don't mix but this is not full
Posted By: GREENCOUNTYPETE

Re: Motor oil question - 10/12/21 08:34 PM

mixing conventional and synthetic is better than being low on oil

but if you can buy the same thing they used in your oil change why not just buy a quart of it and be done with it same same

Re: Motor oil question - 10/12/21 10:18 PM

The poor guy has had more issues and concerns with his vehicle than most of the Jerry Springer shows had about anything. Nothing worse than a vehicle getting old and they start to nickel and dime you to death.

Re: Motor oil question - 10/12/21 10:30 PM

It is not full synethic oil, just synethic blend I think u can mix conventional with it when low ? I been do it for 2 years when low oil between changes , since I start go shop for it, couldn't find citgo, I just gonna change it myself before trap season an in Dec let shop do it an rotate tires an plugs an check more stuff for winter, hope not break down before then, try not run it so much trapping

Re: Motor oil question - 10/12/21 10:41 PM

My husband broke down today. I'm almost pretty positive it was because the mechanic used used motor oil when he did the oil change.... I think.

Why would they do that

Re: Motor oil question - 10/13/21 12:22 AM

Used? Or Re-refined? I've been told that Re-refined oil is actually better for your engine.

Re: Motor oil question - 10/13/21 12:37 AM

Not trying to be rude but if you have to ask what oil to use I am not sure you should be changing your own oil. What filter you using? That .ames a difference also.

Re: Motor oil question - 10/13/21 01:49 AM

you should see if there are any adult enrichment classes in auto mechanics

the high school in my home town had a local tech school that taught a class at the high school shop my great uncle took that class every time it was offered it was like came down to about 10 dollars a night for the class would run for 6 weeks and they would run it 2 times a year.

he got nearly all his auto work done in those classes and when the class didn't run in the summer he could work in his drive way.

Re: Motor oil question - 10/13/21 09:44 PM

Dave, if you get to Farm and Fleet they have their brand of oil for $2.19 a quart right now. It's the same as Citgo as it's made by them. Grab a case it'll run you under $30.00. That way there's no rebate form to fill out either. It's the oil in a black jug with red and blue lettering on it.

Re: Motor oil question - 10/14/21 11:05 AM

all i use anymore is farm and fleet brand oil and it servces me well. after managing jiffy lubes in arizona for 10 years in my mind at the end of the day as long as you change it at the proper interval you will be fine. i buy it by the case whenever its on sale usually like 20 bucks for a 12qt case thats conventional and like 27 for their full synthetic.

coonman i can also tell you that you will not hurt anything adding conventional to full or semi synthetic unless the vehicle requires full synthetic then not smart to mix it. i assume with as many issues as you have with your colorado it is not a 2010 or newer as most gm vehicles from gm take dexos certified oil which is full synthetic.

with all this said just buy oil and a filter and chnge the oil then use your used oil in an old sprayer and spray the undercarraige to help with rust.

2011 is the year that sticks in my mind that GM started using Dexos in most vechiles.

Angela, my dad has a Chevy Colorado 2008 with a 5 cylinder engine that uses a lot of oil. I have talked to a mechanic that complained about how difficult things are to take stuff apart on Chevy Colorado. His vechile complaints are legit.

Re: Motor oil question - 10/14/21 05:50 PM

There dex stuff like coolant, speacil expensive synethic dex stuff for differential, trans an transfer case that pay lot shop when change, I think transfer case for 2 qt's plus labor was well over $50, trans manual held 5-6 qts, few yrs ago was over $90, they charge u about $20 a qt, I didn't know dex oil ? Never heard it for motor oil, never had lot trouble this truck, some yrs an 5 cyl has cylinder head trouble

Re: Motor oil question - 10/16/21 03:29 PM

Found citgo synthetic blend not full synthetic at farm fleet , last 2- 5 gallon jugs left it, $22.95 , now got same oil as shop to match it an when I change my oil come up , ideally not good to mix brand names an add different brand oil to what oil in motor all time, I have cpl qts STP brand motor oil use up , that stuff cheap but doubt buy it again, they sell lot stp oil at auto zone, I rember back when late teens use stop additives in oil burners, thick gooey stuff I wouldn't dream put in motor nowadays, it would blow up or ruin engine
