Tri star trap gun? - 10/14/21 10:20 PM
Looking for a reasonably priced trap gun. Love my brownings but seems like a lot to spend to shoot a couple of rounds every week. Anybody know much about them? Good, bad , ugly?
Found some used bt-99s but without the adjustable stock they don’t fit me well. Love to find an old 870 trap or at least a barrel.

I have a Pointer shotgun you may want to look into them before you decide buddy. They are very reasonably priced (cheap, but a GREAT warranty). It's a top choice for new shooters around here.

I was afraid of that. Looks like it will take a bunch of 5 dollar yotes to by a browning. Better get busy. Lol
Anything a grand or under that’s a decent trap gun?
Jayme I can’t find any warranty info on pointed shotguns. They do have a pretty single trap gun.

Mine's an O/U. When I bought it my dealer said he has sold a lot of them to beginning trap shooters. Said they used them as loaner guns too at the trap range. Literally thousands of rounds through them. He said even when they finally wear out, they will replace them free.

Beretta hurts once but will last you a life time. Then give it to your grandkid. Don’t know which one will get it but the others ones will get something else

Here it is with my boy out-shooting me with it a couple weeks ago. lol
a friend has a tri-star I have shot it , his is 20ga I would think of it as more of a skeet gun as it is short and fairly light
I prefer the 870 or 500 for trap longer sight picture
I have a 500 with a Morgan pad that fits me very well
my son is shooting 24&25 with his 870 not a trap model just a SP
vent rib with center bead 28 inch barrel full choke , stock fit is important
I see the tristar as a disposable gun , you shoot it till it is loose or break something then buy another , Numrich is all out of firing pins
if you like the 870 find a wing-master , send the barrel off to Carlson to get threaded if it isn't already and fit the stock to you
if you want boyds sells stocks you can fit it as needed to make it right for you
build what fits you and never sell it

I help coach a trap team. Most of those Turkish guns, or inexpensive guns look beautiful but cant hold up to the rigors of weekly shooting. I bit the bullet on an adjustable length of pull BT99. My son started shooting it weekly at 8 years old, 60 lbs. I see so many parents show up with a $450 20 gauge pump in the spring. Which has more recoil than a 12 gauge semi or break action and then by fall they've got a $450 12 gauge. If they just went with a quality gun in the beginning they really have something. Go for a BT or other high quality gun, your grandkids, great grandkids will thank you. Best of luck to you.

I have purchased 5 semi auto Tri Stars in 12 Gauge over the years and donated them to a high school trap team. I can’t imagine the rounds thru them and they are all working fine yet.
They are the standard black models, nothing trap fancy about them. First pair given were back in 08 I think so they all have earned their keep with no complaints.

This…
My Son shot one for several years, great guns. A lot of kids in the youth trap leagues shoot them. Run from a Stoeger every one I have ever seen fell apart.
Trap guns are shot a lot more than regular guns.

CDNN has several Browning’s for about 1800 citories and what not. Four times the price but twenty times the
QUALITY 12s, 20s, 28s, and .410s even have a few grade II
And if you call them direct and buy from them with a CC they will ship to your dealer with no sales tax. At least that’s the way it worked the last time I bought from them.

Re: Tri star trap gun? - 10/15/21 04:24 PM
I personally would not buy a Tri Star I’ve seen what’s inside.
Broken fireing pins, butstock that appears to be fine until you remove the through bolt and the stock comes apart in the wrist where the grain of the wood is at 90 degrees to the wrist, cracked extractor due to poor casting, very granular metal in the break. I don’t know if things have changed but Tri Star used to be an importer NOT a manufacturer so what you get this year may not be available next year. If I wanted a camel I would consider talking to a Turk, if I wanted a shotgun probably not. Full disclosure: my experience with them has been with the O&Us nothing with the simi autos.
