The Russian Revolution that no one talks about... - 10/16/21 02:16 AM

I posted this on my fb page the other night. Not one peep from my liberal fb "friends". No two histories are the same but some follow similar patterns. The French monarchy fell fairly fast as well. Similar leadership issues...

If Americans know anything about the Russian Revolution, they think of the Marxist Bolsheviks gaining power in the "October" Revolution (actually happened in November using our calendar) and eventually starting the Soviet Union after a bloody civil war. But, in fact, there were TWO Russian revolutions in 1917, the first toppling the monarchy in late winter (March our calendar). Almost no one talks of this revolt but its important because of the stunningly swift collapse of the Tsar's government. By the beginning of 1917, especially after nearly 2 1/2 years of mostly defeats in WWI, the ruling elite in Imperial Russia was thoroughly inept, corrupt, and hollow. When people started to protest, strike, and want change in the capital, the authorities couldn't control it and soldiers brought in to quell the unrest either melted away, declared their neutrality, or joined the revolt. In less than 3 weeks, the Tsar and his government was overthrown with only a few thousands lives lost. The real bloodletting in Russia in establishing a longer-lasting "government" would come later, wounds of which are still visible today in their society. Elite hubris and echo chamber running packs can be a bad combination. Just ask the ghosts of Nicolas II and his family...

Very Good summation... Will it or can it happen in this country? The changes I have seen in my lifetime are hard to imagine, but by in large they have been on the positive side. What we have to look forward to, I am afraid, will be contrary to that.

God Bless America and lead the masses in the right direction.

But that won't actually solve the problem. The trick will be just how do we keep it from going French on us.

They want to talk about it as much as Bernie Sanders wants to talk about the last few years in Venezuela.

Now there will probably be a lawyer come along and explain to me that I have it all wrong...

I have actually become a big fan of the Russians. The news media makes them look like idiots. But they seem to have brains. I think you can buy land for a reasonable price in Siberia. Just my 2 cents.

This is actually the one I remember the most, mainly because if the tsar had been able to stop that revolution I believe the communist party wouldn’t have been so strong. I do have the belief that most people who have live under a royal family have trouble becoming a democratic society, the founding fathers of this country were some of the exceptions but most fall to a military dictatorships that can lead to communism, socialism, or nazism.

Nice analysis Bob_Iowa! Yes, I think the American experience was rather unique because the founders were basically already in a certain way doing self-rule through Western/Christian democratic processes for decades before 1776. They just had to shake loose of the British monarchy to fully implement it. What most Americans, especially the libs/progressives, miss is that Western democracy based mostly on free middle-class people is the exception instead of the norm around the world. Yes, people are people and have the same basic needs and probably general desires but a true democratic, individualistic, capitalist system has no historical context for most of them.

And only works for a morally strong society
