Lath for plaster, following wood lath era!

There is no way that would be treated like drywall. Too many joints!

Exactly.

It's gypsum board, usually 18" or 24" wide. it was used as a backer board in the 50's and 60's while the construction industry was transitioning away from wooden lath and before taped and spackled sheetrock became the standard. It normally had two coats of plaster applied, a brown coat and the finish white coat. It is usually about an inch thick but varies quite a bit.

I deal with it all the time in remodels. The metal lath used on inside corners is a pain in the butt.

The half hatchet he's using was the go to tool for many old time carpenters. In addition to drywalling it was used for roofing and rough framing among other tasks.

Then there is wire lath. It is the worst to deal other.

I have had some comp claims dealing with wire lath and ceramic tile. Bad stuff!

I saw the inside of an Amish-built house recently. They hung 12' sheets of sheetrock, screwed it in place, and painted it white. No mud...exposed screws and all. I guess they were going for functional, not pretty.
By the way, the 20 acre place sold for 136k 5 years ago, asking price was 379k and it sold for 295k

One of the worst parts was fixing all the nail pops for many years later.

The old house I'm living in is stuccoed inside and out. Gyp board and plaster with just wire mash on the corner doesn't sound bad at all.

That's the way my home is. There are no nail pops because it is under at least a half inch of plaster.

The video shows plaster backer install like mentioned above, but I have seen drywall hung with hammer and nails. The hammer head is domed to create a divot for the spackle and the nails are ring shanked to prevent pops.
It is an obsolete method and not much used anymore (around here anyhow).

My house was that way except the nails were about 1/2 inch apart, we always said the guy who built it must have been payed by the pounds of nails used. crazy
