What's your favorite and have you had success with it helping you kill a deer at least 2 1/2 years old or older?

Re: Scent for deer. - 10/19/21 05:30 PM

Not exactly what you asked. My answer is preorbital from every deer in the herd on a strategically placed vine onna trail. Within shooting range of stand. Get them hung early summer. Most deer walking by in hunting season cannot resist stopping over to take a whiff or make a deposit.

Same here. The best scent is no scent or should I say minimal scent. I have never been able to gain faith in any scent that I have used and it has been well over 15 years since I have used scent of any kind. In the last 10 years I have went 9 of 10 years on bucks 3 1/2 or better on my farm. In an area that is not known to have an older age structure.

Ask them, duh!

Same way I check if they are a quality buck (15” antler spread) here in Delaware.

If you can figure out where a coyote will be within a couple feet you can figure out where a deer will be too. If that deer can smell your "lure" it can smell you. Learn to sit still. Learn to be patient. Sometimes your trap has to wait four or five days before that coyote comes back.

I only use Skunk Essence as a cover scent.

I was setting up a dripper with doe in heat scent today. . Made a scrape under it. Peed on it , before I left. There is always a scrape at this location. Heard where another fellow collected and hung them as an attractant. Will see how it works out. old243

I use a little buck urine with tarsal added on my decoy. Works great

Have had luck with trails end #307, evercalm and vs1, and fox hollows hair raiser. Every urine scent I have used over the years seemed to spook does, jmo

Re: Scent for deer. - 10/20/21 02:10 AM

A lot of guys pee in scrapes and I've done so myself. One thing I do different is store up my own urine and mix it with a synthetic and spray it around my stand site. Sounds crazy, doesn't it?! I thought so too but I'm not the one who came up with the idea. I read about it and thought it sounded just crazy enough that there might be something to it. It absolutely attracts deer, buck and does alike. I don't use it every season but I will be this year. I have a spray bottle dedicated to that purpose. I'll let you know how I make out using it this season.

I have used Code Blue in the past during the rut. Can't say for sure that it works because I got basically the same reaction using it as crappy Tinks 69. I do use the Evercalm and I can guarantee that it works great. Not for attracting but for the general disposition of the animal.

So you would rather your clothes smell like human body oder and sweat? They make a soap called Sports Wash that has no oder's for hunters.

If you want to put the scent down wind of your position then I would say “come on man”

In answer to the question I have killed a buck with his nose a fraction of an inch from a scent pad.
He was flemming (sp) when I shot him. Tink’s 69? Don’t remember the # as it was many moons ago.
If scent is used correctly it is another tool for success . I usually still hunt so a scent pad is not an option.
I was on a relatively small acreage in Tx. in brush country hunting from a stand so it was applicable to make a
buck pause in a shooting lane. Worked as advertised.
To those trappers who disdain the use of scent to hunt please discard all of your lures and make only blind sets.

Re: Scent for deer. - 10/20/21 05:40 PM

I just pay attention to the wind. I have shot several deer while smoking my pipe with vanilla tobacco. One of which was last year on public ground. Heck, I don't normally wear camo either when hunting deer. Jeans and a flannel shirt have done just fine. Lots of people in the woods and fields here, I'm sure the deer have smelled & seen it all.

I’m learning something here.

So it’s not likely a mature buck would make a scrape this close to human activity?

Re: Scent for deer. - 10/20/21 08:23 PM

find buck bedding area wait for right wind go sit on route to or from bedding area then shoot big buck when he walks by. lol this works well for me as long as i dont screw up the shot. i have used hoosier trappers deer scent before and it definitly seemed to increase activity in front of the trail cams. havent used it this years and maybe a few less deer on camera but not enough i think i need the scent.

Why not? Records are broken every year in the suburbs.

Re: Scent for deer. - 10/20/21 08:36 PM

In the past I would sometimes put fox pee on my boots. When hunting near a pasture I would tromp through every cow pie I could.

I think this year I am going to watch the wind closer than deal with any scents. I learned a good tip from "The Hunting Public". They use the Milkweed fluff to check the wind direction, down drafts etc. Seems much more effective and reliable than the little powder poofer bottles I have used for years.

I have used milkweed for decades. It is by far the best thing for checking wind and watching how the thermals are manipulating the scent. Use them one time and you will see how the wind can be blowing one direction at the tree and then turn and go the other as the floater sinks or rises.

I call that, the back draft affect. Happens when winds are intermittent, when it stops blowing your scent does a 180
I don't hunt much when the leaves are still on the trees and its breezy.
I've used milkweed fluff and cata9tail fluff

Not just that, but terrain, trees, big boulders can change wind current just like rocks make Eddys in a river.

I had chicken litter on my boots from working in chicken houses the day before, I took my son hunting. We weren’t in the buddy stand for 30 minutes and had a buck trailing, I guess the ammonia smell, our path to the stand. Easy shot for him and back at the house. 1 1/2 deer.

[quote=HobbieTrapper]Is this a mature buck and how old would he be.

My estimation would be 3-1/2 to 4-1/2 years old.

Too filled out in the body to be less than 3-1/2 but doesn't have the mass and character that should start showing at the 5-1/2

Re: Scent for deer. - 10/21/21 03:30 PM

I used to extract skunk essence from their glands when I caught some while trapping with a syringe. Kept the scent in a plastic pill bottles. Deer hunting I would douse my stand with the scent using it as a cover scent. I've had deer walk right underneath my deer stand many times.

I remember when I was in high school out on a date. It was nearing deer season and I didn't have any skunk scent. I spotted a deer hit on the road. I got out and cut the scent gland out of the skunk, put it in a plastic bag and in the trunk. Girl never went out with me again. shocked

Whoops! I meant a skunk hit on the road. A deer and I might have had a second date with that girl.

My guess is 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 Can't go by mass on the antlers for age. TONS of things can affect that from year to year. Drought early can cause the deer not to have mass.

That's were the trail cam needs to be EVERY buck around will walk by it or work it depending on how big the "big dog" there is.I've seen little bucks move over 10 feet and make another scrape instead of using the dominant one.

Watching the show North Woods Law, I think they decide a legal buck by measuring the distance between the antlers. How are you supposed to judge that?

It's a three inch antler restriction. Anything under is considered an antlerless deer during gun season.

I agree that tons of things can affect mass and even overall inches from year to year. Once they get past 4-1/2 most but not all start to show some character In the form of stickers etc. in my area. Getting past 3-1/2 in my area is their biggest hurdle.
