Re: Catch pictures anyone - 11/26/21 01:00 PM
Took a week off from studies and contracted outside Austin (can't trap the city area legally) to rid 220 acre high fence of coyotes that had killed 5 mature bull axis deer in a month. So we began and found 3 mature male coyotes with 3 mature females and eliminated them all. A dirt hole with lure and bait caught all three males in 6 days.... had one every other day. I don't usually catch males bang, bang, bang like this but the competition was ramped up in the enclosure and we used that against them with 100% effectiveness.
Gotta love the uniqueness of trapping every time, and 6 yoyes in an area this size is not good for deer.
Blessings,
Mark
Nice pictures everyone. Maybe I should carry a camera so I could share. Keep them coming.

Yes that one was quite a dinosaur… and not well liked apparently. Funny about that particular colony, they had flooded out a cross country ski trail and carriage road. We got 6 the first two nights, and a final one the last night. All 7 were adults and I believe only one 2 year old. We never did get a single kit on that colony. The dam breaks I did the last two days went untouched until I picked up the last one on the last night on a dry crawl over adjacent to the dam break.

Re: Catch pictures anyone - 12/03/21 05:19 PM
I am skinning them and teaching my sons how to in process. If they make some bad cuts, not out much, great time to learn and with the mild weather been easy to catch.
I plan to finish out the better ones too. Same thing, teaching the boys as we go and if something happens with the fleshing its not like we are out much, great time to learn.
We live fairly close to grizz's shop and he is buying out of his shop. Had a friend sell some skinned ones and range was from $0 to $4 on those.
Yes that is cheap, but they are easy to skin and its helping with gas while we catch coyotes and badgers. And as said, this is ideal time to let the boys hone their skinning and fleshing skills, and that has been a lot of fun to work with them on the learning curve.
Big benefits around in low coon market for us!

This is what our Illinois red and white coyotes look like. More to come.
Red and white number 2. The near one. Second double in 2 days, different location. I kept the back one in the picture.
Yup, another Illinois badger. They sure can dig with one foot in the trap.
I've been attempting to water trap and land trap at the same time.
I caught this one with the 20ga first morning of the first firearms season.

Those were both old dirt holes.
However, I have caught 2 in pipe sets already. And with a MB550. It is easier with a dogless trap.
Yeah, NonPCFED that was a bigger yote. The back one I kept was a female. The double the day before at another location was a pipe and dirt hole, male and female.
I've thrown away about half of what I've caught so far due to poor fur quality. This time last year they all looked a lot better.

Texas is a big state, with a lot of different physical geography. I suspect that yotes from the high plains and the southwest desert are generally like other southern half of the Inter-Mountain West. For as much as I appreciate Savell's coyote catching adventures, those parts of Texas isn't near-sea level always humid piney woods. 600 to 800 miles west or northwest and a couple thousand or more feet higher elevation has some impact...

Nice pictures good to see those little water wolves, wish we had more around here, the number's have been really down the last 20 years along with the muskrats. Some years you could trap 50 to 100,back in the days you could get many in a day no problem, this year while duck hunting out of Willow creek there was about 15 houses so a guy could have trap 30 to 50 this year. Our bobcat, marten and fisher season opens next saturday, going to run a couple of sets hope to post a picture or two of a cat or two along with a marten, keep posting pictures good luck to all the trapper's that have a line out.

This time of year I'm usually water trapping numbers, but this year I went north with some friends and got my first marten and fisher. They've been trying to get me to go for years. Glad I did. We only have a ten day season, but I got it done. Plus, caught a few beaver, seen some sweet country, played a lot of cards and drank a decent amount of beer!

Re: Catch pictures anyone - 12/13/21 01:51 PM
I suspect that about 98% of Americans, maybe even more, would mis-identify that big fisher. Either they would have no clue at all, call it a fox, or maybe on the outside a wolverine.
And yet the return of fisher to the forests of northern-eastern CONUS is a species success story. One of many. And almost none of them are talked about, especially 1) the resilience of many wildlife species, and 2) good wildlife management. No, rather dwell on the half empty side of the glass because it gives certain advocacy groups more political power and money. Give the WWF a hundred bucks and you can help save the polar bears. And who do you think political administrations such as Sniffy's and his minions (or his handlers?) listen to when it comes to wildlife trends, WWF people or state game managers...? What crap...

I only have 23 set out and some of them havent connected since thanksgiving, going to start pulling some and move to different part of the farm.
The coyote in this picture i had this morning, this was a remake from a catch on saturday morning when i remaid this dirt hole set, i added a pee post about 2 foot out of the trap circle with just urine caught this one in pee post set
i actual pulled the pee post trap and reset it outside of second trap circle this morning, this was my first time trying this i will be useing this set up more often.
As far as bait i'm useing some kansas trap line bait and lure, keg creek showtime bait, Funke bait and lure, reuwsaats bait and lure, other lures i use, caven's gusto and yodel dog, dobbins canine select

Was bored this weekend. Bought a few 110's from the local sport shop at nearly double the going rate if I'd have waited and had FNT ship them. And proceeded to catch my first muskrats. Have trapped a metric crapton of coon out of my river property. But never targeted the rats or mink. Kids thought it was the greatest thing ever. Daughter wants to be a wildlife biologist.

Missed this guy the other day somehow he got out of a snare had a bit of fur on the cable, often they are gone after that or stay in the hole not this guy was snared again on the next check. Muddy mess with temps above freezing and sunny days that mound dirt gets greasy. The foot sets are drifted over just seen this guy made a fresh dig so I tossed in a snare. I caught one not far from this one the first check after I set. This section always produces badgers every year it’s good for 3-5 badgers every year.

I do get some pales and some darks.
The finish on the marten this year doesnt look as good as some years. You can notice it on the skin on the right.

I've been using the Vaseline all So since I started trying out cages that I built. The cat today was caught in one of them. Although I was told by Mercer lawing when I met him and purchased a cam trip cage. That I should try a gun oil called 80 below full synthetic sporting oil. Here's a link to Macks prairie wings, I just haven't tried it yet.

One of 2 doubles this year. I was real picky about the coyotes I kept for the stretcher. Front one was rubbed. Back one was missing most of the hair off the backs of its ears. Neither one rode home.
I kept the one in the back. The front one was 1 of 2 red and white ones this year.
That's a 71lb beaver.

Cat next to a built in cubby along a road going to a food plot. I put a cam there last year at the end of the season and it had a lot of cat traffic using it.
Small fox today. Released. Eric

Did that badger do all that dirt work? Longer anchor chain and a guy could be competing against those crop circle makers.

Fox today before the alleged snow we are supposed to get tomorrow. I wore a t-shirt today checking traps with my son.

Looks like that fox wrecked himself fighting the snare.
I hate finding anything alive in a snare-almost always means wrecked fur.

I’m not sure, he was probably bad off before it. I’ve also never had one dead in a restraint.

Norwestalta, Yeah, they do all that work with one foot in the trap. I hate catching badgers. I used to think it would be cool to catch one, until you do.

Neat. We don't have them up here and I've only seen one once when I went south for antelope hunting. How deep do they auger themselves down? Looks to be a good 12".

Red #40 of the season this morning on my small coyote line. It has been a great year for fox here both red and grey. I can't keep them out of my coyote sets.
coyotes are real thin around here this year and the farmers are happy.i generally catch around 40 coyotes a year on a pretty small line and so far this year I've caught 6. Absolutely tons of fox tracks all over this morning in the fresh snow and not one coyote track. It is so nice to see fox around again. I have released 37 of the 40 reds I've caught so far this year and released 6 of the 7 Grey's. Tight chains everyone.

Chad, that's like the ghost racoon.
Mole,
One of the very few reasons I'd like to be still in NY is that I could catch fishers right around my house. 30 years ago they were only in the northern zone. We did have a lot of grey fox back then. None here.

Caught red number 41 on the year this morning but the coyotes got to her before me and had her belly all tore out and bites all over. Couldn't get the .204 out of the gun rack quick enough to at least shoot one of them before they retreated.i would've released the poor girl but she wasn't going to survive that.

Are you allowed to sell the pelts when trapping those Mink? Does the government (or some other entity) pay a bounty?

No market here for fur unfortunately. Yes the government gives a small bounty on mink. They want to eradicate them.

That picture was taken on the Clodiagh River Boco. I mainly trap that river, the Brosna, and Silver river, in Co Offaly. They all lead into the river Shannon.
Score!!....

Nice catch Vegas Jim.
Neck Snares are an excellent tool for cats-very humane on account of cats physiology.

I always cover the floor and pan. They push the dirt out. I try to use as much as the original dirt after the catch so it smells like cat. Another from Last night:

This is my son’s nephew by marriage. His first rifle . Uncle Mike bought it for him. I use a deathray most of the time but he wanted to shoot one. I showed him where to put the bullet and one shot he hit the sweet spot. Pretty excited little boy
Great experience for that young man, he will never forget it.

This was answered, but I caught one a couple years ago on a sand hill out in a big crop field. He dug out the anchor and went down. By the time I dug him out my friend with me and myself agreed he was about 4 feet underground.
Then you need to fill the hole back in. They are more of a problem than anything else.

Picked up a nice little tom this morning in a walk through set with a red fox tail flag. Didn't expect much coon movement last night as it was 0 degrees this morning. But the landowner wants them out so set a few dp's. Thought maybe a few boars would be out running around and managed one.
