Balustrade Day

Balustrade Day - 11/26/21 10:46 PM

I set these new stairs as part of a big remodel I’ve been working on the past several months and today I finished up the balustrade.

The first tread is cut open to accept the starting newel and the newel is notched.

All done.

No they're not. Ten inch treads with seven inch risers.

You must set a mean lean killing machine of a coyote trap! Angle is key and you are an artisan!

Nice, I always hated those, because if the bottom, of what I call the spindle, isn’t cut true you’ll see a little gap and it bugs me.

Re: Balustrade Day - 11/28/21 02:27 AM

Baluster and spindle are interchangeable, pretty much the same thing.

The ends were cut square, no problem with gaps there but, as I'm sure you know, you have to be careful not to fit the mitered end into the plow too tight or you lift the previous one up a little causing a gap. I shoot a finish nail through the top of the baluster into the rail before I put the fillets in so the bottom of the last installed baluster can lift if I get lazy and knock a too long one plumb instead of going back out to the saw and trimming a hair off.

Some of these balusters had the dowels drilled in off center. I barely made the four-inch-spacing rule using two per tread and those couple of off-center dowels put me at 4 1/8-4 3/16" between balusters. I'm hoping the inspector doesn't notice...
