Yes sir it would be, cept I always have a fuller tank than lesser, and carry extra gas in winter . It's the Montana way ...and if gas runs out, anyone with a can, can get you running again ...with electric, it takes being out of that line plugged in for hours !

I have one more ace up my sleeve, Mr Paul....I don't get in jams like that ...IF I evah did, that is what driving off the road is for .. right down the center or off to the side if needed . I've done that before in Seattle, in wintah

Yes sir, Mr Paul, there was. My father had them too....a WW2 fighter pilot of Avengers and escorting Bombers .

Seven times decorated for coming to the aid of his mates in midair battles.

The smokes were in all the packs given to them all at that time.

No One cared. They were focused on the prime directive.

He later in life quit . But at that time, as many others, he did what they did.

It took one thing to make him quit.

When his little girl told him that someone gave her a smoke to try. And in her innocence, wanting to emulate her father so much, told him she tried one . He made her smoke one til she got sick...never to try one again.

The best thing he ever did....and soon after that, he quit.

All a person needs is the right reason....

Absolutly right Sharon. I was 26 when I littered by throwing an almost full pack out the window, and never looked back. That was almost fifty years ago, and still can't stand the smell of them!

Charlie Albanese: thanks for posting. The pilots are John Carter and Ed Billet. Craig Leyda is on the starboard, and that's me on the port. Picture was taken by Terry Halladay as we came back into Camp Evans. We were shot down on the far side of the Ashau. We waved at a Bird Dog just as we were coming out of the Valley, but I was never able to find out who it was, but he got some great pictures. John Carter's story about this is quite a read - they were almost out of gas, and were taking fire when they touched down on the edge of a bomb crater to pick us up. I got a kick out of Charles Elia's comment about the snap link - we had no such critter. I offered Carter my watch afterwards - it was a beat-to-crap $10 Timex - but he just laughed and said he'd take it next time“

My stepfather was a gunner on a chinook in Vietnam and got a bronze star with a V. Can hardly get him to talk about it. Looking at the pic and reading what you posted Sharon, I can understand better his words of " you did what was needed when your brothers needed you". God bless those pilots.

Chopper pilots , gunners and crew well know what this piece of machinery is....means dire straights if it is found loose and disconnects ...just as bad even if tossed on the floor as a joke ...to many crew chiefs , it isn't a funny prank at all ....

I’m betting it has to do with the tail rotor! I worked as a machinist in nam at the airfield on camp Enari. Can’t remember how it was spelled, been too many years. I know from working around there that about the worst thing to happen in a chopper is to lose the tailrotor!

I wasn't part of a helicopter crew, I was with the 101st five years and got to be around helicopters a bunch. I was doing the sapper thing all that time but with rappel rigging and sling loading ops I was around a lot of the crew chiefs.

We went thru Basic Training in Ft Dix NJ. When we went out on bivouc it was -18. We slept with our rifles in the bag with us.
