Anybody speak a second language - 12/21/21 02:50 AM

Yes, however there are 4 dialects of German. Where your family ancestry is from in Germany would be probably the one you'd want to learn first :-)

My grandkids were in a Spanish immersion program from K-5 grades. All classes were taught in Spanish by teachers from Central and South America. Kids are fluent. Grandson used to read books in Spanish, stuff like all the Harry Potter books - because he could. Granddaughter, not so much.

It's a worthy goal. I would recommend the app DuoLingo for your phone. Have patience, take your time and have fun. I've found when learning a language it was a blast cooking something from that region using a recipe in that language and how that recipe/food came to be.

Re: Anybody speak a second language - 12/21/21 05:40 AM

Foreign languages are a perishable skill.

I took three years of Latin in high school thinking it would help in the scientific fields I was considering at the time. I sure wish I had that time back to study something useful.

I worked for many years for a Swiss/German engineering firm. Learned a ton of German words, and could read and create German engineering drawings. German newspapers were still Greek to me.

I worked for an Italian firm. Same deal as the German stated above.

I studied Spanish with the intent of retiring in South America. I think I might be able to get by if I were immersed in it, but, when I have the opportunity to converse in it now, my lag time in translating pretty much precludes any conversation.

Re: Anybody speak a second language - 12/21/21 05:52 AM

My French has gotten good after all the years here. Never any classes, just learning it out of necessity and sitting at long lunches.

Wish I would have studied Spanish in high school instead of German.

Re: Anybody speak a second language - 12/21/21 06:11 AM

Nope. I took three years of it in high school but my brain just wouldn't pick it up. I suppose it was because I thought it was useless. If I was even half way interested in a subject it stuck with me... foreign languages not so much. About all I know how to say is yo quiero Taco Bell y cervaza lol.

Re: Anybody speak a second language - 12/21/21 06:44 AM

I have studied some foreign languages. Not enough. Wish I had taken more.
French: 3 years in junior high school.
Latin: 3 years in high school. 2 years in college.

Latin is foundational for French and Spanish.
So the French and Latin allow me to fake my way a bit in Spanish.
Old Western movies taught me important stuff in Spanish.
Latin taught me a tremendous amount about English too.
Latin helped me tremendously in my career.

I want to learn Swiss. My ancestor legally came here in 1717. More moved thru Germany to here. I would like to learn German too. Both for a trip that will probably never happen.

Re: Anybody speak a second language - 12/21/21 06:45 AM

I have been around Yupik Eskimo language for like 40 years. I know some phrases and names of many every day items and most animals, but to string a sentence together is real hard. The words are very guttural sounds at times and very hard for to pronouce them since its not in our sound vocabulary.

I have to memorize a sentance to speak it.

Re: Anybody speak a second language - 12/21/21 10:12 AM

My great grandmother taught me to read and speak Irish as a wee lad. We would sit at the holiday dinner table and converse back and forth. My grandfather, her son, would get so mad and tell us only English was to be spoken at the table. She'd then proceed to call him a bad name in Irish and giggle. He'd glare at her cause he knew just enough to understand she was cursing him out. I found out the hard way he knew a little when he did something and I called him one and he took the belt to me.

I haven't used it in over 30 years, so I've lost most of it. I can still pick some of it up in movies, but for the most part nothing.

A friend's 5 year old taught himself Russian and Chinese by watching YouTube videos. He can't converse in it, but knows enough to point to something and say it in either.

Let me help you out. There are actually 4 and I don't know how many local dialects. No, not nearly everyone I have met ( and I have met a lot, mostly over 40)speaks fluent English

Romansh is the fourth.

Re: Anybody speak a second language - 12/21/21 12:18 PM

Japanese not quite fluent but can make and understand most none technical conversations , some Chinese and Korean, mostly from living there and picking up useful phrases and words, also high German which was spoken in my grandmothers house as much or more so then English

Also have a smattering of words and phrases in several other languages as well as most of the swear words in them, funny how those words are often among the first in any language you pick up outside of formal learning that is.

My kids are truly fluent in several languages and can converse at native speaker level just from our living there, it’s amazing how quickly kids pick up other languages when just exposed to them

Re: Anybody speak a second language - 12/21/21 01:54 PM

I should add, that where I grew up in the north of Germany we spoke Platt at home. Some call it a heavy dialect, ut it is actually its own language and very close to Dutch. I used to speak Dutch as well but lost most of it by not having had much use for it . I can still read it and when I was in PA I found out that I could understand the Amish there. I never let on with that one when a friend was haggling with them about some metal roofing that they made for him. I was able to translate what they were on about sort of behind his back that gave us an advantage they never figured out. On the island in Germany where I grew up, we had 3 Dutch TV programs and one German one as we were closer to Holland than Germany . The Island is called Borkum if anyone wants to look it up on Google earth. Part of a group of 7 along the north western coast of Germany in the north sea.

After living there a bit more than a year, then being married to one for several years, I can get by in Russian (the informal bush variety).

Tried to learn a bit of Mongolian, but didn't stay over there long enough. Picked up a few phrases and wildlife words.

Re: Anybody speak a second language - 12/21/21 06:27 PM

I do speak some now but trying to learn proper Japanese, 4 years taking the duolingo course. Was in Okinawa with the army and made real good friends with an old man there. I built a boat there and he helped a lot. He is now gone, was in their military from 1934 on till Nam was over. His family is scattered all over the place and several of his kids almost my age went to college here in the US. They kept telling me to learn more proper Japanese. So 4 years ago I started with this course, I am only 2/3 the way through it. It is time consuming.......jk

Re: Anybody speak a second language - 12/21/21 06:36 PM

Sarcasm.

And a smattering of Æld Englisc... Mainly what I learned from YouTube videos. Not quite ready to read Beowulf as originally written yet.

A smattering of German... A very small smattering. I do a little better with reading it than hearing it spoken... More time to think about it I guess.

Took French in high school. Don't remember much about speaking it, but again , if I read it I can somewhat dope out the general jist of what's being said.

My great aunt Carol was very fluent in Dutch... She had Dutch books in her house and would read them when the notion struck her. I remember looking through the books and recognizing some of the words.

According to the State Department, Norwegian is about the easiest language for diplomatic staff to learn... Frisian is about the closest to English... But it's kind of a dying language and fewer and fewer people are speaking it now.

English is a funny language... When you start studying the Germanic languages you start to realize how much we dumbed it down and simplified it so various peoples could understand each other.

I pic up foreign languages surprisingly easy, not sure why. I speak enough spanish to get by, just from visiting spanish speaking countries such as Mexico, Peru and Spain. I remember a lot of spanish words, but putting them together into a sentence is challenging for me.
