Beaver trip - 12/22/21 02:28 AM

The brother and I took a beaver trapping trip this fall thought you all might enjoy the pictures. Caught 154 the wolves ate 4 that were alive in snares on the shoreline caught them all in 5 nights in northern Minnesota

Nice work. Those all black ones should be worth a lot more $. Lots of castor in there too.

It's potential catches like this that keep Mn. closed to non-residents I bet.

Guess you will re-pac those wheel bearings before next fall if you carried all that weight 150 X 30= just over two tons
Looks like the water levels were down in the lakes you were on.

Thanks for sharing your trips work

Yes water levels were way down after the dry summer we had it amazed me that some of these beaver were going to winter in the ponds with what little water they had. The low water made it possible to set channels and deep runs with conibears that you normally wouldn’t be able to. The low water really limited the beavers travel routs

I understand.

There is even one guy in Minnesota that understands:

"Trappers are poor businessmen. Provide a service for free and then lose money on the back end selling them so someone else can profit off of our free labor." smile

Re: Beaver trip - 12/22/21 03:09 PM

I am glad to see that they took the extra effort to get more of the beaver utilized. It wouldn’t reflect on trappers very well to leave prime beaver laying around minus their castor. In fact it might be considered wanton waste in some states.

I hear you on that one but I have a good relationship with this fur buyer and if he can use the whole beaver I will bring him the whole thing. I also like to see him make some money so he stays in business gotta keep those country buyers around.

If he is a smart buyer, he should make $20 minimum on each beaver. Good Job keeping him in business.

Nessy maybe next year we can get Trapstickman to help weigh them beaver as they come in
further along in the pile was the 3-4 inch tails

Sure hope you took some pictures of the tails for Pauls flattail contest - cuase with all those 8 to9 inch tails you would have taken down the Top 10 spots
Everybody better concede and just have Paul send out the prize now- before the postal rates go up 1 Jan

Gross. He spent $10. He has at least a $10 hide ( hatter ) $10 worth of castor and at least a $10 carcass. Any DK-XDK HVY LG and above not damaged he could probably put up and sell for between 20 and $35 at FHA. ( With the snare damage, handling damage, green belly, and trapping too early probably only a few) I didn't say he was a smart buyer, but if he has a beaver meat market. then he is.
Posted By: Jurassic Park

Re: Beaver trip - 12/23/21 04:56 AM

Tails are worth $50-$75 alone here for a select few people and their buddies get $20.
Posted By: beaverpeeler

Re: Beaver trip - 12/23/21 06:06 AM

If the buyer needs meat to feed mink and fox there was quite a lot of value in just the raw carcass. Plus if a guy has the right connections there are heads, tails and oil sacs all bringing in extra money besides the obvious pelt and castor money. I averaged just under $8 last year (pelts) with about that amount of beaver at FHA. But when I add in the other things I was pushing $30 for an overall average.
(When you sell some carcasses... and use others for your own bobcat line it is hard to say exactly what the total carcass value was).
Posted By: 20scout

Re: Beaver trip - 12/23/21 12:51 PM

Yes you can break down the carcasses and part them out but sometimes your time is worth more. That's a lot of work even for two young men and it was there .decision to make. Congrats on a job well done!

If you averaged just under $8 the buyers were paying over $11. There is the 8.2% hammer price buyer commission and the $3 per beaver handling fee.

You guys did great in an area with a lot of beaver. The Foothills and Pillsbury have good numbers too and not much pressure these days. And they're closer. At $10 a head in the round, I'd take that any day! Good choice IMHO.
Posted By: gman

Re: Beaver trip - 12/23/21 03:12 PM

There is a ton of MN beaver trappers that do that every spring. Catch a bunch fast and get rid of them fast.10-12 bucks apiece. Very smart way of doing business in my opinion. BTW Great catch you guys!
Posted By: Tyler D

Re: Beaver trip - 12/23/21 03:30 PM

I can understand everyone’s opinions! But hey everyone’s situation is different. The brother and I had taken this week to catch as many as we could. I had a wife and kid waiting for me to get home and I had 5 pigs to get into the butcher the day I got home and I went on call for work that next Monday so there was no time for me to mess with those beaver. We would have gone and caught that many beaver for 5 bucks apiece. These days it’s more about the memories and time together up in the woods than a fur check.

I've spent my whole career as a beaver trapper forced by necessity to extract as much $$$ as possible from my catch, hence my earlier posts. But kudos to you and your brother and your explanation (although unnecessary) makes wonderful sense and you've every right to feel great about a feat that few have duplicated. Including myself.

Only two otter the whole trip. They are laying on the step in front by the coon and two rats. I figured we would have limited out we can trap 4 apiece in Minnesota. I had two 280s sitting in a grassy creek all week long and they were never touched the two otter we got were in snares one on a dam cross over and the other in a slide going up on the bank
