Fire starter idea.

I have a lot of saw dust with long shavings from ripping big logs down. Im thinking about putting some of the pine on a baking sheet in the oven on low to dry them out. Once dry mix with dryer lent and wax and form using tolet paper roll cores. I figured bralikg off an inch or so and light to help get a fire going in wet conditions when it may be tough.
Anyone tried it or something similar. If so did it work ow was it a wast of time? For thoes that have not tried it what do you think?

It will work fine. As long as you have the proper tender. I have used several different wood shavings. The dryer lint and wax has always been enough to get a fire going, the wood shavings just add a little extra time for it to work.

Try cotton balls and petroleum jelly, I was surprised how hot and long it burnt.

My neighbor does this , he gets 3-4 Duraflame type logs. Cuts them up using a heavy bladed large type knife using gloves. Makes them into chunks about the size of a meatball. Stores them in a cardboard box.

When starting a fire he uses about 3-4 chunks. This is enough to start both of his woodstoves for entire winter and he burns a lot of wood.

Put chainsaw shavings in cupcake papers and dump on a tablespoon of HOT melted wax.

I fill a jar with cotton balls and soak them with rubbing alcohol. The only problem is you have to pack around a jar if you aren't using them in the same place all the time. I would bet your idea would work too.

^ this is the simplest/easiest method. Small jug or tube of petroleum jelly and some cotton balls in a zip lock along with a lighter.

All of the above will work but this is the best I’ve found. This will work soaking wet and will light in wind. It will also light with a spark, not a flame needed. By far, the best survival piece I’ve used. And…it takes up nearly NO space. Stick it in a pill bottle

Never tried it but dad told me GI mosquito repellent mixed with C-ration peanut butter would burn hot enough and long enough to boil water for coffee. So I reckon it would light tinder.

Pine knots work great-also birch bark.
Pine shavings should work good.

Buddy of mine mixes diesel and ashes into a paste...says it is amazing!

Cotton and wax is hard to beat. No mess like cotton balls and vaseline, easy to light, burns a long time with good heat. Use cloth or heavy twine.

I scrounged some scrap pieces of Magnesium from the machine shop I worked at. Works great! Was told you can scrape into powder and mix it with wax to hold it together too.

Duct tape works pretty well and we get used cooking oil form the dinner to start brush on fire.......jk

We started a fire when a storm moved in on us while Elk hunting many years ago. I gathered some wood and was ready to use my cotton balls when my boss pulled a HWY flare out of his pack and started a fire saying flares will burn underwater. That was awesome! As soon as I got home I put HWY flares in my hunting pack, fishing pack and truck.

If you’re going to use anything, test it out on a miserable winter day that’s so cold your fingers don’t work with gale force winds when your almost hypothermic.

I put some Fire Paste in my pack as well as the small container of hand sanitizer gel which is 70% alcohol. Squirt it on tinder and light. Put a large Bic lighter in too.

Wallmart sells Duraflame fire starter sticks that are cheap, easy to start and burn a long time

Get the gray cardboard egg cartons. Fill each egg compartment with dryer lint. For hot wax in each cavity. Cut into 12 individual fire starters

This is what i use to start wood stove, works great.

well I am cheap and lazy and mostly only start fires at home

when I am at the grocery store they have celery in waxed cardboard boxes
I grab the box , pack the groceries in it to save bags and make fewer trips in the house then when I am done putting away the groceries pull out my knife and cut down the box every 3 inches or so
then around the bottom fold

I end up with strips , toss them all in my bucket for stuff to be burned and when the junk mail isn't quite cutting it toss in a waxed cardboard strip , man do those burn

lately I have coals from the night load to get thigs started in the morning

I have made the saw dust and wax in paper eg carton type back in scouts , good project for kids but they keep sending me so much junk mail to burn I really don't need much else

I was thinking project for the kids. After xmass im thinking about a few day back packing/tree rat hunt at the national forest. I have not been camping in years and think it will be fun for the boys.

On my mt lion hunt last year we wanted a fire to warm up after a big hike. Everyone broke out thier fire starter from their packs. I had the cotton balls and petroleum jelly, one had a commercial starter and one had the dryer lint and wax. One match and mine was going and lasted long enough to get some tender going. The lint was next the the commerical one. And the needed lighters to get enough heat to get them burning. This was in over a foot of snow cover.

Make a couple different kinds with the kids then let them try them all out. Santa might even bring them a magnesium and steel to try.

I always carry a few fusees on the bike and skidoo and truck for emergency firestarters.They burn for 10 minutes-so they will light fairly big kindling.

Seen a flashlight that will start a fire advertised on YouTube just hold the light close to a flammable item, it even cooked an egg in a small tin sitting on the light.

Until you run out of your x wives ashes, then what?

Birch bark works pretty good for starting fires .
Most people in the north know how good it burns .
Just saying if you don't have your fire starters , use it and dead branches from any evergreen type tree still on the tree and protected , it's dry for kindling .
Only posted this for those that are in areas that don't have paper birch , but may one day be in such an area .

The brown pith under the bark of a dead cottonwood tree burns rather nicely to in a pinch it's a great old Mountain man trick.

Fall squirrel hunting, shingle blade and my pack basket. I carry some twine, the seek out the fallen white birch. I cut the bark into squares that fit the basket. I pack enough in a trip or two for both wood stoves fire starting needs. A fall tradition for me, Hunting, scouting my trapline and picking birch bark. The bark makes long lasting cubby roofs. I have seen many crafts done with birch bark and I have split small saplings then used as rustic trim and picture frames. I light the bark for fires, blow it out then relight, I call the sweet smelling smoke backwoods natural incense.

I put dryer lint in the toilet paper tube with a little birch bark and a paper towel soaked in bacon grease. Pack the whole thing in the role. Burns hot.

I remember a poem about it: First a roll of Birch Bark,,dry as it can be.Then some twigs of soft wood,,dead but on the tree.Last of all some knots of Pine to make the kettle foam.And theres a fire to make ya think your settin right at home.

i make up toilet paper roll and shredded paper & wax , put wax and paper in crock pot ,mix and stuff rolls ,will start fire in wet condition

Cardboard egg containers are collector items now. All I see is styrofoam anymore.
