Just about every cover done by Post Modern Jukebox.

Sound of Silence cover by Disturbed.

A lot of song covers are much better than the original, often so much better that people forget the original. Look at all the Slade covers by Quiet Riot as an example. Some covers suck too.

Slade.

Quiet Riot

I like Slipknot's "Psychosocial".

I love Leo Moracchioli's cover of "Psychosocial" with the banjos.

I did love the singer's voice on the Song of Silence. He has a very nice singing tone. Very Celtic , Viking feel to it.

Re: Song Covers - you a fan? - 01/12/22 09:46 PM

This and the Disturbed-Sound of silence cover are about the only ones I can think of. Other than that I think most modern “musicians” ain’t got a chance the minute they add a beat box and all sorts of crap to the song. I say if you’re gunna change a song you better be adding a worthwhile change, not just making a modern version.

"Hurt" by Trent. Reznor of Nine Inch Nails is very good.

Johnny Cash's cover is phenomenal and better.

Roy Orbison was in the same camp , you liked him or he just sounded off if you didn't know better you would think he was the one doing the bad cover

I think one of the best love songs ever written was Tim Hardin's "If I Were A Carpenter".

I like Bobby Darin's cover better.

Diane prefers Johnny and June Cash's cover.

I like and will listen to all 3 versions.

I don't care for any covers and feel it's a slap in the face of the original singers !

To me it's just ripping the people off to sale a new sound, why can't they do their own thing ? Yea so you are going to say they are doing their own thing, no they are styling a song to capitalize on it !

Never enjoyed hearing other's doing others songs, when I pay to listen to someone I want to listen to what they
do, or write not what's already been done 10 different ways already !

I once spent over 2 hours listening to "Whiskey in the Jar" covers on YouTube. The song is from Ireland and dates back to around 1650 and has been covered many thousands of times. I first heard Metallica's cover.

Metallica covered Thin Lizzy's version.

A lot of the more traditional Irish versions are very good too.

I saw the Killdares play "Whiskey in the Jar" around 20 years ago at the Dayton Celtic Festival.

Re: Song Covers - you a fan? - 01/12/22 11:04 PM

Just like any other music, some are great and some are terrible. Most is a matter of preference I guess. Also, a lot of what we consider “original” versions aren’t original at all.
Motorhead had a lot of really good cover songs, many were quite a stray from their normal type of music.
And surprisingly enough, I really like some of Marlyn Mansons cover songs. Though I don’t like his normal music.

Most every song any of us have ever heard is a cover. You just don't realize it. Almost all hymns, Christmas Carols, patriotic songs and all other music was written and sung by someone else other than the people we first heard it sung by. Look at the credits on the records, tapes and CDs you own. Imitation is the purest form of flattery.

Re: Song Covers - you a fan? - 01/13/22 01:50 AM

the vast majority of the time the covers are a poor replacement for the original.
I don't bother even listening to covers.

Besides that a top rate band/singer should be making its own music instead of redoing whats already been done.

There are a rare handful of covers that end up surpassing the original. 1 out of a thousand or so.

Re: Song Covers - you a fan? - 01/13/22 02:44 AM

I saw Heart perform Stairway to Heaven a few years ago at Starlight Theater. It was a decent version and my seat was about 30 feet or so from Nancy Wilson. She is definitely aging gracefully. I have never been to a Led Zeppelin concert so a direct comparison is not possible for me. I do agree Lugnut. I saw that performance somewhere and Page and Plant seemed to really enjoy it.

For you guys who think doing covers is ripping off someone else work or a slap in the face to the original artist, here you go. A true American classic redone by Home Free at the request of Don McLean the original artist. He approached them about doing this version for the songs 50th anniversary. Don still sounds amazing 50 years later.

Leo has well over 400 covers available on YouTube. He takes the songs he covers and makes them his own, with a strong heavy metal influence. He is incredibly talented, but way to goofy acting. He does a great job covering Adele's "Hello".

Re: Song Covers - you a fan? - 01/13/22 08:20 AM

Bob Dylan--great song writer. But it was others that made many of his songs popular. The Byrds and Roger Mcguinn made Mr. Tamborine Man and My Back Pages hit singles.Mcguinn is a better singer and a better guitar player than Bob.
Peter ,Paul and Mary-covered Dylan and had a hit.
Jimi Hendrix -covered Dylan and had a hit.
Manfred Mann-covered Dylan and had a hit
Those are just a few of the musicians that took a greatly written song and improved with their versions.
A cover of another persons song is actually a tribute to that person.
'' In the jingle jangle morning--I'll come following you''.
