Observation, Question, Thoughts - 01/13/22 01:51 PM

I captured 11 Reds at this location with Dirt Holes. Then nothing, I mean not a track, a scratch or any digging of any kind. Couple days ago a made up a handful of snares and hung them out.

Is this a “smart” one? How smart is it to avoid the dirt holes but walk through an untreated snare that has my scent all over it from putting it together?

New one to the area? Old and crafty but has never seen a snare?

Always a few that dont respond like the majority. Nothing is 100%. With coyotes at least, a truly trap shy coyote, wont come within 50 yards of a trap after its discovered. IMO (coyotes) that are called trap shy, really are not a lot of the time. Just respond differently. If you read the sign and turn your thinker on a you can still get them. Like you did hanging those snares.

Was it an older fox or a YOY?

My thoughts are much like Danny’s in that some critters just respond differently. I have seen traps with toe nails in them and the same trap with a fox missing a toe nail the very next night.

Perhaps a fox that does not respond to a dirt hole was the low dog in the pecking order when mom was teaching that lesson and found the dirt holes fruitless so why bother?

Animals rarely get shy of snares.Misses with snares tend not to educate animals like misses with traps.
I have caught animals in snares-especially wolves which are most suspicious, that have walked around a bunch of snares only to be caught in one they did not .

Female. Can’t say for sure her age but her teeth aren’t “new”.

Another reason that I always set some cable on trails whenever I set a foothold or two at the location. As long as the area calls for it.

Power lines are still king!

And keep them coyotes down on your side of the island.

Are you referring to the two-track maintenance roads running parallel to the transmission lines? That makes sense.

Another “cold” location that a snare produced.

I had a trail cam on this however by the time the camera activated he was already in the snare.
