Are we talking firewood permits, split, unsplit?
Permits are $10 for 10 cords, split cord can go from $100-$200 depending on who is selling

Re: How much is Firewood in your area ? - 01/16/22 05:18 PM

Here in the northern Lower Peninsula you can buy seasoned oak for between $60 and $80 a "face-cord" (aka Rick) delivered. That would be cut between 16-18 inch lengths. I have a couple older Ashley type stoves that can handle 24 inch pieces, so when I buy wood I request it cut 20-22 inches. Most won't do it. The last 3 years I have resorted to buying about 1/2 of our wood, but always preferred to cut my own. The state will let you cut dead and already DOWNED timber if you get a fuelwood permit. It is good for 5 full 4'x8' pulp cords of wood. Since Covid they have waived the $20 fee. The Feds will also let you cut 5 full cord on Federal ground. That is another $20 permit. We are a county away from any Federal ground or I'd do that when cutting......they allow dead STANDING timber to be cut. Neither agency allows any driving off road to get to the wood, you gotta lug it or wheelbarrow it. I haven't cut on a fuelwood permit in 6-7 years, but never had trouble finding plenty real close to the road. We are blessed with a bunch of state land in my area, and it is loaded with thousands of miles of two-tracks. Cruising along with a coffee looking for trees to add to my collection is a very enjoyable activity. Pre-Covid the permits were only valid on state land between April 1st. and December 1st. They may have removed that restriction as well as the $20 fee.

I usually cut four to six cords a year for my own use here at home and up at camp.

I have lots of dead ash also. Processing it into usable firewood is far from free though.

My MS 261 cost $620.00, my old Stihl 021 about $200.00. The Kubota L35 I use to drag and haul wood cost $24,000.00. A cant hook, a pickaroon, felling wedges, chains, safety gear, fuel, chains, maintenance...

And mostly my time, which has a value.

I do enjoy the hard work and exercise but if I don't have the time I will buy firewood. Even buying enough to heat a full winter is a much better bang for my bucks than any other fuel source.

Re: How much is Firewood in your area ? - 01/16/22 05:22 PM

Those are "rough numbers" alright. I bought 10 tandem loads last week of first class sorted Red Pine post logs and didn't pay that much per full cord. A face cord is a common quantity sold here. 16 to 18 inch split seasoned red oak or ash in a stack 4 foot tall by 8 foot long can be had for $50 to $60

Maybe so but this is straight from "New Morning Farm" website. Says they been selling firewood for 40 years.

We offer:

1/4 cord - $155
1/2 cord - $300
Whole cord - $595
Kindling - $15

We use a cubic measure, so our 1/4 cord is 32 cubic feet. Our standard length is 18", so a 1/4 cord makes a stack approx. 3' x 7', a little less than a "face cord," a term not used by us but by other dealers in D.C. We can do special orders for "short wood," approx 15" in length. Please add $10/quarter for short wood.

I pluck oak slabwood bundles out of loads I buy for grinding into landscape mulch. Set them aside and sell for $45 a bundle loaded gently on your truck or trailer. I pay $15 per bundle for 30 bundle loads, everyday.

Re: How much is Firewood in your area ? - 01/16/22 05:56 PM

it all depends how many miles you are from a city or tourist cabin area here.

my cousin was selling 18 inch deep face cords for 150 a few years ago he is in out of state cabin owner land , propane was cheap that year and he was thinking he should just have his tank filled and keep selling all his wood.

with the cost of labor and fuel and inflation 350-400 a cord wouldn't be out of line.

but then you have to find an honest seller also

had a local guy looked like he had a trailer load of cut and split locust he wanted 500 for the trailer load.
well it was a fairly light weight utility trailer if it had 500 in wood on it green it would have a bent axle
he took the pictures so it looked stacked high but was only a little over the side rails
he had cut it the week before , and split it the day before posting it
so it was green and he was telling people ready to burn

Not all firewood is created equal
  • cut, split, delivered, and stacked dry firewood of a decent btu such as oak= approx.$400 per full cord in my area.
It takes time, and materials to:
  • Fell
  • buck
  • haul
  • cut
  • split
  • dry
  • load
  • deliver
  • stack
For each task eliminated, there is a cost reduction. Therefore "free" firewood is also sometimes available

I cut, split and pile my own always have, this year the wood fairy was good to me everyone around me cut wood or needed it cut. My buddy has a tree cutting business he worked in my area this summer so together I’m 2 years ahead now. Never had to pay for it here lots of elm and ash that’s dead on the stump people want gone. Lots of cottonwood to be had I don’t seek it but if they want to drop a load I’ll take it to save them a trip to dump it elsewhere.

Can’t think of anyone ever asking to buy any here except what they sell to the campers in the overpriced bundles at the C-stores.

So to convert to American:

7,000 rubles = $95.00 (roughly)

1 cord of wood = 3.62 cubic meters

3.62 x $95.00= $343.90 for a cord in Russia.

Here where I am, about 11,450 rubles ($150) for cord for unsplit Douglas fir or lodgepole pine (we have virtually no hardwood available). I enjoy getting my own, so it's probably about $500/cord counting vehicle gas, saw gas/oil, amortization of saw, truck, time to fell, buck, split, stack, etc. laugh

Re: How much is Firewood in your area ? - 01/16/22 10:11 PM

I usually cut a couple of cords a year and sell. Usually oak and ash. I get 100 dollars a cord, pretty reasonable. I just don't want to sit on it to long.
Posted By: Dirty D

Re: How much is Firewood in your area ? - 01/16/22 10:20 PM

a cord of hardwood is about $250 delv'd within a short rad. usually something like 15-20 miles.
I have had a glut of firewood since we had a tornado go thru our woods.
I have tried selling firewood and I do sell small amounts but the issue is I don't delv.
I sell well season and dried hardwood, mostly hickory for $100/cord. You have to come pick it up. I'll help load.
I have 2 customers that regular have been buying from me. Thats it.

My glut is pretty much gone. I make all the firewood I need for myself and might just sell a little bit here and there to one of the lake home owners. Thats it.

So my point is the price/cord is one thing, another is it delv'd or not? How much to have it del'vd.?

Re: How much is Firewood in your area ? - 01/16/22 10:34 PM

We have plentiful Oak here, but have a glut of Ash the last few years. The Ash borer beetle killed every Ash in about 5 acres of wetland I have. Ash is good firewood, easy to process and split, but not the btu's of Red Oak. Hickory is rare here but some of the best firewood.

My family owns a sawmill. Been selling firewood in some capacity for 25+ years. We sell it strictly by the facecord. We have about 50 racks built 4’x8’ and roughly 18” deep. Bring a rack over to the splitter with the skid steer. Fill the rack and put it out to the road with the skid steer. It is 65$/facecord. I’ve heard about full cords my whole life but we’ve never measured that way. You pick up for $65/facecord. It’s all on the honor system. Put your cash in the box before you load it. If you pay more or have something to barter with, delivery could be available but we try to get away from that because it’s not worth it. Firewood is a major part of my life and from the age of 12, some of my best memories have been doing firewood with my gramps.
